Splendor in the Grass (1961)
A Terrible Waste of Time and Talent
Can't believe this film gets a 7.8 average rating. This is perhaps the worst film I've ever seen. No one who has ever lived acts like the people in this film. The overwrought acting, absurd story line and unlikable characters make this film unwatchable. Where was the director? Where was the editor?
Hawaii Five-O: Tread the King's Shadow (1978)
One of the best from the series
A refreshing and at times compelling departure from tracking down a drug dealer or bank robber, this episode hits home by dealing with a family issue that is much more down to earth. It likely reflects executive producer/star Jack Lord's personal feelings in its pro-native Hawaiian and pro-life points of view. Well written, acted and staged. Too bad there weren't a few more like this one during the 12-year run.
Jane Eyre (1943)
A true classic of Hollywood's golden era!
Those looking for an example of Hollywood at its best need look no further than this 1943 masterpiece. From the superb acting to the literate screenplay, haunting musical score and outstanding production values, this version of JANE EYRE is justly considered one of the finest films ever produced in Hollywood. Orson Welles is superb as Rochester and Joan Fontaine in the title role gives one of the best performances of her career. The supporting cast is also outstanding, especially Henry Daniell who provides an unforgettable performance as Brockhurst. I have viewed this film numerous times over the last 20 years, and it never fails to entertain. This is a not-to-be-missed film for anyone who enjoys classic Hollywood cinema!
Les Misérables (1935)
Hollywood at its best!
This 1935 version of "Les Miserables" is perhaps the finest film ever produced during Hollywood's golden age. Highlighted by superb acting from three of the greatest English-speaking actors ever to appear on film (March, Laughton and Hardwicke), a superb script and outstanding production values, this 20h Century Fox production has more than stood the test of time. Now released on DVD, it is available for modern audiences to view and compare to other filmed and staged versions of this classic Victor Hugo tale. Even now, 73 years after it was filmed, it never fails to move the viewer with its extraordinarily powerful narrative. A not-to-be-missed film from Hollywood's Golden Age!
