Who's Watching Oliver (2017)
Intense and strange
I won't lie, there are elements of this film that are almost too uncomfortable to watch, but they are actually necessary for the story. Oliver is truly messed up, but somehow you manage to feel bad for him... it's not entirely his fault. His "mama" is the most screwed up mother since Norman Bates' day. The mood is dark and strange, half the time we're in a dream-like amusement park and the other half we're strolling down dark alleys in some asian metropolis.
This movie has it's ups and downs but it's certainly unique, and if you can handle it, give it a watch.
The Smashing Machine (2002)
An amazing documentary!!
I won't describe this movie, since you've probably figured out what it's about by now, but I will say one thing that REALLY stood out. When you watch this
movie, because it was so brilliantly edited, you will feel like it is a legit hollywood film, and not a documentary. The timing of the cuts, the music, the mood, all make this documentary feel more like an amazing Rocky-type movie. What
seems most hollywood of all is the story, the rise and fall of a hero... all the helping characters and evil villains he runs into along the way... and it's all REAL. There is one scene where this guy that he is going to fight, who is the size of godzilla, is with all his evil little cronies and they're laughing it up in a huge pool like a bunch of villains would in some movie. The movie had it's own Ivan Drago type (from Rocky 4)... you know the Russian champion who nobody
can beat because he's so tough. It was just really cool. So if you see this, think about what I've said, and you'll notice right off the bat!!
Cube (1997)
Made good use of my imagination
Though the acting in this movie was near terrible at moments, I managed to look past that (partly because I understood it was produced on a low budget). The premise was unique and I definately enjoyed the hellish feeling of being in the cube with them. A cool movie indeed, though not for everyone... but what movie is.
Indiana Jed (1992)
A superb fan film!
The mere fact that these guys were 15-16 when they made this is insane. They captured the feel and look of the Indiana Jones trilogy so well, and made a great film while they were at it. Sure the opening of the movie starts off king of copying Raiders... but the rest of the movie is pretty much original good old fashion early 90's / late 80's style action! Such featured items in the movie are: lots of crazy one liners, mullets, car chases, fire, glorious scenery, fight scenes, special effects, CIA agents, arabs and lots lots more! I love this movie and consider it to be a favorite amateur film of mine, because so little amateur films are this entertaining. The only thing that drives me mad is that because they lived in such a nice place, they had the luxury of filming in waterfalls and badlands... and I ain't got any of that!! DANGIT! But I must appreciate it anyways. =) A wonderful film indeed, look for the Linn brothers in future films!
