Monster's Ball (2001)
Halle Berry was phenomenal...
Ok, this was a VERY disturbing movie. However, Halle Berry's performance was simply the best job of acting that I believe I have ever seen. She definately deserved to win the academy award for Best Actress. I will watch this movie over and over again just to watch Ms. Berry perform...
Life as a House (2001)
My all-time favorite movie...
Life as a House was an absolutely incredible movie. In fact, it is the best movie I have ever seen. I find myself becoming more sensitive as I get older, and I do admit that I sometimes cry at a particularly emotional part of a movie. Life as a House is different, though. The strange thing is, I cry harder every time I see it! This movie affects you on several different emotional levels. I laughed, I cried, and I was in suspense. Hayden Christensen definitely made this movie. His portrayal of Sam, a troubled teen, was so incredibly realistic. Kevin Kline and Kirsten Scott Thomas followed up with exceptional performances themselves. This movie is a MUST SEE!
Spider-Man (2002)
Simply the best comic-based movie EVER!
I must admit that I was a little skeptical at first. Sam Raimi as the director? I was expecting James Cameron. Tobey Maguire? Willem DaFoe? Kirsten Dunst? Oh come on! Then I saw the movie. I was wrong. Sam Raimi was brilliant - he created the best live-action adaptation of a comic book that I have ever seen! Tobey Maguire was very convincing as both Peter Parker AND Spiderman. Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane very well, and Willem DaFoe was a marvelous Green Goblin. With rumors flying about a second and possibly third installment in a series of Spiderman movies, I find myself very excited. If you enjoyed the likes of Batman and Superman movies, you will LOVE Spiderman!
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
The best Star Wars movie yet!
Ok, so it has a cheesy name... And that Jar Jar character... Yes, the scene in the droid factory with C3P0 was so ridiculous it hurt. However, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones was overall the best of the Star Wars series to date.
Newcomer Hayden Christensen was exceptional in the defining role of Anakin Skywalker. He pulled off some very difficult scenes with relative ease. You could feel the tension and the emotional battles raging within his head. He conveyed his internal conflicts in such a way so that the audience could identify with them. Not to mention, Hayden has to be the sexiest young male star in Hollywood today...
Natalie Portman's role of Padme Amidala (the former Queen of Naboo, now turned Senator) was much better than in Episode I. You can begin to notice similarities between her and her future daughter, Princess Leia.
Ewan Macgregor is becoming Sir Alec Guiness in Episode II. I had a very difficult time imagining him growing into the role, but I was proven wrong in Episode II.
With the side stories of Jango and Boba Fett's background, and beginning to see the beginnings of the Empire and the creation of the predecessor to the Stormtroopers, this movie began to tie things together. I am beginning to see that Episode I was nothing more than the sacrificial lamb with had to be slain in order to lay the groundwork for the remaining episodes.
Also, the love story between Anakin and Padme was written beautifully. The costuming was also exceptionally well done. Congrats, Mr. Lucas, for you have outdone yourself...
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Angelina Jolie IS Lara Croft!
I'm not a huge fan of the actual Tomb Raider game, but I VERY MUCH enjoyed the Tomb Raider movie. The action sequences and special effects were second to none, and Angeline is THE BOMB! I was VERY impressed to find out the Ms. Jolie performed ALL of her own stunts - she did an incredible job! For any action/adventure/sci-fi fans, I would HIGHLY recommend this film!
Common Ground (2000)
Phenomenal acting and accurate portrayals of life
Although I have seen many excellent "gay" movies, this movie tops them all. Along with Showtime's TV series "Queer as Folk", this movie accurately portrays the struggles and triumphs in the lives of most homosexuals. Luckily, I was able to purchase a copy on eBay (this movie is not available on DVD or VHS, except to members of the Academy Awards Nomination Committee), and I have shown it to all of my friends and family members. All agree that this movie should almost be mandatory viewing. I highly encourage any and everyone to take the time to watch this film. If you are a homosexual, then this film will make you feel great about who you are and your history. If you are not, then this film will certainly open your eyes as to what it means to be a gay or lesbian man or woman in the world today.
