Forgive Me Father (2001)
Death Wish with a twist
Now that Charles Bronson has stopped bringing Paul Kersey to the screen as the stone-voiced avenger of the Death Wish films, Ivan Rogers has brought us Virgil Garrett. This cold-eyed instrument of vengeance is also a man of the cloth, bringing an additional element to the harsh judgment he brings to those who have "sinned." Get right to the action, punctuate the violence, and make sure your villains are really villainous. . .and gear up!
The Matrix (1999)
All frosting, not much cake
A film with the sort of depth only Keanu Reeves could capture. Really nifty eye-candy; really weak script. Like Independence Day with LESS substance. ..if that's possible. Anyway, in the era of "high-concept" films, can't someone who can write dialogue actually get to come in and make it so you don't cringe at the spoken words in between Industrial Light & Magic effects?
Jaws (1975)
The finest, most complete film of the last thirty years
My favourite film of all time, perhaps not the best, but it is among the most complete. While owing a debt to Moby Dick for certain, this film combines sharp pacing, clever and intelligent dialogue, and is a text book for the man-versus-nature parable. If you don't appreciate the power of this film, you're missing something.
The Haunting (1963)
The king of haunted house films
Remakes come and remakes go, but this film is the greatest haunted house film ever. It has scares and chills, jumps and creeps and all right in stride. Once it grabs you, it flys by with both fear and intrigue worked into the ostensibly simple premise. More frights than a marathon of slasher flicks and in glorious black and white.
