Dick (1999)
Best viewed by those who lived during Watergate
This movie falls into my Romy and Michelle catagory. A film that has no real artistic value, but is so subtle and witty that it is genuinely real. Two brainless girls stumble onto the watergate scandal and become Deep Throat in a few deft moves of stupidity that it can almost be believable. Michelle Williams fills her role much better than any Dawson's Creek episode I've ever seen and Kirsten Dunst seems to grow more and more as an actress in every film she's in. It's hard to believe she's the little girl from Interview with a Vampire. Although I wasn't even alive during the Watergate scandal, I appreciated the movie's humor and wit. Dan Hedaya is hilarious as Nixon, as is Dave Foley's characterization of Halderman. The only part's that are painful are Michelle Williams singing, a scene that made me wince, and the whole singing Hello Dolly sequence. Maybe because I didn't live through it, I didn't find that bit quite as funny, but I do think the film was underrated by many who saw it. Probably better appreciateed by people who lived through it than the teens of today.
Inspector Gadget (1999)
For Everett Fans Only
Ok I admit, I was never a fan of the cartoon, but I decided to give this movie a try and the only people who will enjoy it are small children and Rupert Everett fans. He is the saving grace of the movie. Every one of his scenes is hilarious, although he alone cannot save this movie as much as I wish he could. Matthew Broderick seems to know how horrid the movie is and only gives what feels like half a performance, instead of savoring them in a burst of overacting delight like Everett or even Andy Dick. Adults everywhere will be rolling their eyes into the very backs of their heads when Dabney Coleman spouts off a "wowsers" at the end of the movie. I may have actually gagged at that part. And could someone please explain the stupid car to me. This movie is truly for people who like Rupert Everett, and even then have the remote ready because you NEED the fast forward button.
Elizabeth (1998)
A Masterpiece
This movie got completely buried under all of the Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love hype, but every person who I know who has seen all 3 films has agrees with me that this film is the best of all the rest. Cate Blanchett hauntingly portrays The Virgin Queen who is attacked by men from every part of her life and conquers them all with the aid of the evil but powerful Geoffrey Rush. Joseph Fiennes finest scene is at the very end when Elizabeth confronts him and makes him an example of her growing power. The script is wonderfully written, showing Elizabeth as a flawed woman who loves and is rebuked and gains all of her strength. When she is shoved into a corner she comes out fighting and you want her to succeed. Blanchett was completely robbed of the Academy Award,as much as I like Shakespeare in love and Gwyneth Paltrow it is not even half as wonderful and artistic as this movie. Watch and see for yourself.
More Tales of the City (1998)
A Must See For Tales Fans
If anyone has ever seen the first series then More Tales of the City is an absolute must see. I had only watched the first series once before, but one of my very best friends and I decided to split the cost and order the sequel on DVD and neither of us was disappointed. While there are less startling revelations going on throughout as there was in the first series it is still highly addictive to watch. The progression of Laura Linney's Mary Anne character is startling, she's turned into a man hunting pot fiend, a far cry from her days as the prude at 28 Barbary Lane. Mona's journey into the desert is the most entertaining part of the whole movie, although true fans will be able to decipher who Mother Mucca is in a matter of minutes.
The new actors fill their roles well, with the new Brian being the only exception but it's good to see his role "fleshed out" more than it was in the first one. You have to see it to believe it!
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
The Best Bond Film
If Sean Connery had starred in this Bond film it would have been beloved by all, but the addition of George Lazenby to the Bond index has become a cultural joke, but why? I was fully prepared to dislike this movie, but I absolutely LOVE it. I sat myself down over the period of a week or so and watched every Bond movie ever made, even dragging a friend to the movie theater to see The World is Not Enough and I have come to the conclusion that this is the best Bond movie ever. George Lazenby was screwed from the beginning, which other Bond has had to run around in a kilt??? Although he isn't as sexy as Connery or even Timothy Dalton, he has a quiet intelligence that certainly Roger Moore never had in any of his 007 outings. This is the only one where Bond ever seems to have a heart and soul as he gives his love to Diana Rigg, who is absolutely breathtaking in this film, completely holding her own against Bond. When she skates up to him in the middle of film and saves him I cheered. She is stunning during the end sequence against Blofield. Smartly written and subtley written this movie truely gives Bond a heart and a vendetta to score against SPECTRE. A must see to truly appreciate the Bond. franchise
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
One of the best Disney movies made.
Sleeping Beauty is absolutely one of the best Disney movies ever made, truely standing the test of time even now forty years after it's creation. The art work is lush and vibrant even by today's standards. Princess Aurora is one of the most beautiful of Disney's heroines, making it quite easy to see why the Prince would fall in love with her at first sight. But the real star of the movie is Maleficent. As a child, she was the only Disney baddie to ever truely scare me. She commits all these acts of pure evil and terror merely because she wants too. Not only is her curse terrifying but to actually think of the sixteen years of torture that the king and queen went through can make one realize just how manical Maleficent is. She is the best of all the Disney villians, certainly more so than the lackluster villian from Tarzan. This one is the ONE to compare all Disney movies by.
