Contact (1997)
see this movie
Watch this movie once, then again, and again. It won't get
old. It's by far one of the best movies ever made, from the
acting to the effects to the message; it has it all. While the
movie is about faith and science, for me the most amazing
part of the story was the hypocrisy that was expressed in
blatant yet unacknowledged form in the last sequence.
That for me was the most powerful message of the movie.
Jodie Foster is fabulous, and I just love David Morse in any
role he ever plays.
Asteroid (1997)
hooray for cheesy action flicks!
I'm not surprised that many people blasted this movie;
some folks just seem to think that action flicks like this are
supposed to be realistic. Sorry to disappoint, but they're
supposed to be larger than life. You want life, watch a
documentary.
Michael Biehn is one of my favorite action stars and he
doesn't get nearly the attention he should. Yes, there were
some very bad actors and writing in parts of this one, but it
was still a fun couple of hours. The TV version is way too
long; the VHS version has been trimmed down and it's a
good thing.
The End of the Affair (1999)
didn't love it, didn't hate it...
A previous comment mentioned this was a "love or hate"
kind of film...I beg to differ. It left me strangely ambivalent.
Some scenes were wonderful, some boring, some plot features interesting, others mundane. Julianne Moore was
good, but not Oscar worthy by any stretch of the imagination. And I was struck how similar Ralph Fiennes'
character was to his English Patient character; jealously of
inanimate objects and owning body parts seemed remarkably alike to me. The only really intriguing part of the
story was the friendship between the lover and the husband...an interesting dynamic that I have to admit made
me think. I liked seeing the scenes from different viewpoints, but on the whole, I think the overarching themes of God and love weren't as intense as they should
have been. Still, a pretty movie to watch and appreciate for
its cinematic value. Pick a rainy day and rent it.
Fight Club (1999)
A waste of the late fee...
Despite remarkable acting, this movie is not worth the extraordinarily long time it took to get through it. This testosterone laden tale contains a semi-interesting twist toward the end, but even that can't make up for the cliche filled, "you are what you own" lame attempt at a moral message. Don't waste your time.
Crazy in Alabama (1999)
Surprisingly funny...
This movie is worth seeing just to watch the courtroom scene and the judge at the end. Using a very funny Melanie Griffith to provide the requisite comedy, it also highlights the horror of racial prejudice that ends in violence. And David Morse, as usual, is wonderful. A good movie for a rainy night.
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Read the book
I loved this book, and then I decided to see the movie. Normally, I like when movies are different from the books. However, in the film, the changes they made were tragic. Removing key characters, creating extraneous and shallow new ones, changing the very nature of the lead female role, leaving out major events...bad moves. Instead of a moving story about two vulnerable people struggling to fall in love, you get two typically gorgeous people doing sentimental and romantic things together.
Not a bad movie, but not a good movie to see after reading the book. Your money will be better spent in the bookstore on the book
