Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
awful
I saw the movie last week I was in shock afterwards.
What happened to the Pirates of the Caribbean the first I was looking forward to the sequel of a sophisticated full of wit. I especially enjoyed the fact that everybody - but most of all Jonny Depp - was able not to take themselves too serious. Let's admit it, the genre Pirate Movie can only be endured nowadays when it is not taken seriously. It may be unfair to compare the second movie with the first - the commercial pressure on the second is certainly much higher than on a first one of a sequel..... But the first one had a story - as opposed to clichés, it had characters as opposed to wooden sticks in costumes, it had wit - as opposed to ...I don't even have a word for it.
Why shorten the role of Jack Sparrow, Captain Jack Sparrow? He is supposed to be the antidote to the boring characters of hero and heroine!!!!!!!!! Neither Keira nor Orlando are good enough to rescue a movie disaster. Who believes that special effects are a substitute for a story? And those special effects were just silly
I just realise that the longer I write about this movie the more time of my live I am wasting on this stuff
Mickey Blue Eyes (1999)
Just a waste of time.
This is a movie about an English auctioneer who proposes to the daughter of a Mafiosi. Unfortunately this collision of two to three different languages and cultures was sadly neglected in the movie. The few times it considered it you would wish it had rather not. Just remember the painful scenes when Hugh Grant tried to speak American/Brooklyn/Italian slang. Or when Jeanne Tripplehorn laughed about the way Hugh Grant runs.
Hugh Grant was occupied to deliver his usual acting in his main character. When watching it you can almost forget that he is able to be really funny and is able to deliver respectable acting as well. When an actor is only able to do one kind of character, who cares when it is done well? Did anybody blame Cary Grant for just doing this? Everybody who saw Maurice knows that Hugh Grant is able to act. He is also able to be funny as he proved in Four Weddings and A Funeral. So what was the problem with Mickey Blue Eyes. I reckon it was the script.
Who can fight against such a story. And the Co-actors where at a loss as well. James Caan was vague and Jeanne Tripplehorn could also do better. Maybe it was not only the script but the director too.
Todo sobre mi madre (1999)
All about whom? Perhaps all about women?
Almodovar delivered a masterpiece. But without his actresses he might have delivered a boring "as usual" movie. The emotion of the actresses was genuine and their delights as well. Manuela going to Barcelona looking for the father of her dead son. When she arrives in Barcelona she gets in touch with old connections but will not find the father immediately. But she finds other women instead and the relationship between all these women is the story of the movie. This story is not only the tragic and sad story of a mother who lost her only son but it is also funny and optimistic. However, Manuela will not stop to mourn for her son but all these women will lead her to a new life. This is a movie about women and it is clearly dominated by women. Strange enough it does not show such a thing as strong hate against men. As a message you might state that men are not really important for the life of a woman. Important might be what she can achieve, what she can create, what she can share.
Thus it is a movie which can also give everybody watching it something to lead us through our lives.
Trick (1999)
Have a good time
I went to see a feel-good movie and that was what I get from Trick. It is always a little tricky with romantic comedies. Some of them are awfully boring. However, when the acting is good (which it is in Trick) and the story is sweet but still somewhat related to reality (which it is in Trick, just remember the ending!) then I like to see them.
Campbell was great and the whole audience was on his side and suffered for him. Still I did not understand why he fall for Mark at all. Pitoc has little variety to offer when it comes to mimic and gesture. All of the supporting actors where excellent. Even Spelling was great. What I liked about them was that they did not only exist to support the story about Gabriel and Mark but had their own stories to tell. I especially liked that part about french breasts and prudish America.
Isn't it nice to sit in the cinema and see on the screen sweet sweet love? If you do not like that don't go to see Trick. Isn't it nice to be in sympathy with the main characters and hope for them that they will find each other? Again, if you do not care for that, don't see it.
I don't care whether this story is a realistic story about two gay men or whether it only shows a cliché of gay men. Show me a entirely realistic romantic comedy about a man and a woman!
It should be seen as a step towards normal behaviour when a story about gay love is allowed to be as sweet and unrealistic as Hollywood used to show love between man and woman for decades.
