They Shoot Movies, Don't They? ...The Making of 'Mirage' (2000)
Lamest mockumentary of all time
Just caught most of this on IFC (missed a bit of the beginning) and thought for about five minutes that it was real, until the shabby acting gave it away.
What I really hate about this thing is not just the fact that I don't see the point (I don't think there is one, except an attempt at a calling card for the director), but the fact that it doesn't take one style and stick with it. At times, it's overwrought intensity, and at other times it's like a boring comedy skit.
The biggest problem of all, though, is that you don't even get to see clips of this movie they're making, which really collapses the whole concept. It's a 'documentary' about the making of a non-existent movie. Yay.
The yelling match scenes are really annoying.
If you happen to catch this one, too, flip away FAST.
Go (1999)
Enough hip already...
This movie was at its best when it wasn't trying to be so hip. All that hip-talk just distracted from the story. Otherwise, it was rather fun...except the whole middle part that was just made up to make it Feature-length: car chase (yaaawn); mob-type with braindead sidekick (yaaaaawn); guns (yaaaawn). So, watch the beginning, skip all that crap in the middle and watch the end. Then, you've got a good 45-minutes
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Rich, multi-layered storytelling
Wow! A Hollywood movie with imagination and regard for the viewer. I was a little worried the day I saw this movie because it's rated PG and there were many boisterous teens present. But, ten minutes into the story, everyone was equally enthralled and spellbound. Even following the credits, as people were filing out, there was only thoughtful conversation and a sense that something amazing had taken place: we'd been treated with respect. Now, that's RARE!
And the 'surprise' ending. There's been so much talk, I couldn't help 'figure it out' early on. But that only made the film much richer, as I began noticing so many subtle details. And it only serves the story. It's also amazing to see such a 'star' as
Bruce Willis playing support to a child. Forget Blair Witch!
Treat yourself to something TRULY unique.
Worth seeing...twice...
