Les origines du SIDA (2004)
Kaprowski
Well, honestly, leaving the evidence aside for a moment (even though I tend to agree with the premise of of the film) they intimate / imply several times that Kaprowski isn't being forthright or honest. I have to say that if someone was accusing me of creating HIV I probably wouldn't be so forthcoming with them either.
Otherwise I think the film did a great job of making a good case that the vaccine in question was the vector by which SIV made its jump to HIV. The other interviews with forthcoming lab techs from that era are compelling evidence that Kaprowski isn't being 100% truthful, or at least wasn't 100% aware of what was going on.
One deficency that I would have liked to have cleared up was the bit about when the first documented case of HIV / AIDS was reported. The documentary claims that it was after the start of the use of the oral vaccine, then it says that the academy reviewing the hypothesis said the first case was in the 20s or 30s. Finally they just dismiss this claim. I think it would have been much more...convincing had they been able to present more credible evidence regarding the origin of AIDS, perhaps a follow-up documentary can present a fuller image of the history before delving into the events in the Congo in the late 50s.
Manhunter (1986)
What happens when people over analyze
Anyone who says this movie is better than Silence of the Lambs is just hopelessly trying to be different in that "nonconformity" way that was so popular with the Breakfast Club crowd. This movie was AWFUL. It was AWFUL before Silence of the Lambs, and it's still AWFUL.
It must be noted, however, that Hopkins' interpretation of Lecter is fantastic, and comparison with Cox's is not appropriate. The whole immersion in the 80's "Miami Vice" like atmosphere is distasteful to all but those who still watch Nash Bridges.
For those who feel that the story behind Manhunter is "better" than Silence, you're probably right. Red Dragon is a much more straightforward book than The Silence of the Lambs. The books have undeniable similarities, but the addition of a FEMALE officer in Silence complicates issues, and creates more complex situations within the story. The movie Silence exploits this well, but oftentimes to the dismay of the serial killer genre fan. I see it as the kind of difference between Seven Samurai and Die Hard. Seven Samurai is a great film...Die Hard is a good action genre film...but not a great film. Unfortunately, Manhunter isn't even a good serial killer film, it's just...ok...and the 80's motif swings it into the "awful" territory.
But that's just my opinion...I could be wrong.
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Did I miss something?
Where do I begin? This is possibly the worst movie that I have ever seen, bar-none. Seems to me that if you want to write a 30's Micky Spilane whodunnit then do it, if you want to film a sci-fi flick then do it, this falls pathetically short on both counts. I'm sure a good story + a good director + a decent cast (which you can't really blame here) you could pull a movie like this off. Listening to the alternate audio on the DVD it became dreadfully clear that the director was much more interested in sets and color palattes on Photoshop than on...well than on DIRECTING. Yet another failure for Sony, they should stick to making electronics and give up on the film industry...or hire some better directors...or get better screenwriters...actually I find it hard to believe that they could have done a worse job in picking the crew.
1 of 5 stars, i.e. if every movie on earth disappeared but this one, I guess you could watch it.
O Lucky Man! (1973)
Good Stuff.
Its been a long time since I've seen this flick, probably because its pretty long. A bit too long, but like most other masterpieces I cannot decide where exactly you would edit the film.
4 of 5, good, but clear an afternoon to see it.
