Pitch Black (2000)
Eh, it could have been much better..
I've seen sci-fi thrillers and I personally thought this one was at the bottom of my list. Yes the acting was great, the animation was great, but certain parts of the movie could have been different.
A quick summary: the crew of a huge ship suddenly awakes to find that their ship is going hay-wire. After trying their best to land the ship, the ship crash lands on a seemingly deserted planet. However, as the plot unfolds, they find that they're only real danger is the darkness which is like day time for the evil aliens that live on the planet.
My, it sounds like wonderful right? Not entierly true. As the plot unfolds more and more, you only learn about the escaped convict which they rely on to escape. Everyone else, it takes you almost half the movie to learn their name. Some of the characters I didn't even know until the credits rolled by. It gave you no background on the characters except for the "cop" and the "bad guy." Everyone else is hard to get attached to except for the main character, Fry.
Of course, the whole crew of the ship relies on the macho "bad guy" to get off the planet. He figures out everything, everyone else follows him almost without questioning him. The characters don't think for themselves except for the very beginning where they are forced to make a choice without him.
Well, "Scariest Sci-Fi Movie of the Year?" Not really. Although one part made me jump, others made me nervous, and the simply amazing music (no sarcasm there folks ; )) tries to tie it all together it simply doesn't seem to work. I think because of how short the movie seemed, they never had time to build you up as you went through the movie. Perhaps they could have made it so that it goes between night and day and the characters slowly get picked off rather than having a few hours of an eclipse every 22 years. They could have made this movie a lot better.
The ending, I hated, because of what the writer of the movie did to a certain main character. If you saw the movie you know what I'm talking about. I hated that part. When movies do that to me, they drop down a few points on my, "List of best movies" list.
Overall, it was a fine movie. It was not in the least scary. I am a four-teen year old and guess what. I could have fallen asleep if my care for what would happen to the characters did not keep me awake. Do not expect this movie to be a nail-biter. Do not expect that what you think the movie is about, that is what it is about. It isn't. Would I recommend it? Yes...but from there you have to tell me your opinion. 7 of 10 stars.
Les Misérables (1998)
Play-Movie Comparison? (Spoiler)
Where to begin? I was impressed with the movie. However, they left out some of the parts that I saw in the play, which I saw a day earlier. First of all, they left out the character of Eponine who actually bring Marius and Cosette together. Although when I watched the play I thought Eponine should have gotten Marius, there was no way of feeling that in the film. I thought Cosette should have gotten Marius because he was man enough to talk to her...(instead of like in the play...). Of course if you put in every detail that made the play what it is now, it would have been long, but they could have made it much more interesting.
The movie was much more dramatic than the play. The fun of when you first meet the Innkeeper and his wife never happened. There was no fun in this movie it was just...drama... and that wasn't what I expected.
Although I didn't expect this, it was still a good movie. Uma Thurman playing Frantine was great. She threw a great pity party. Her character has just been fired from her job (Working for Valjean). Now in order to support her daughter and herself, she reduces herself to selling her body. Although I wish she didn't die, she did, and that was the end of her.
I also liked Geoffrey Rush's performance of Javert. In the movie it got to the point where you just hated him, but in the end, for most of us, the hate turned into pity as he let himself drown.
Liam Neeson. What can I say? I haven't seen him in another movie but... he was good! Through the movie you feel annoyed by the fact that Rush/Javert continues to chase him and that he can't be left alone. You feel sorry for him because he spent 19 years in prison and now Rush/Javert wants to put him away for life.
Now Claire Danes, the movie could have been better for her. If it had been a bit longer perhaps you could have felt more pity for her.
Well, this movie immediately went into my list of the top 10 (including Red Corner and The Cutting Edge). If you're ever in the mood for a good movie, rent this one along with a comedy to watch afterwards. I'll give it 10 stars.
Red Corner (1997)
A great movie, but no one has seen it!
After I saw this movie, I had to see it again. Most likely it was because it was on HBO and I missed the first thirty minutes. I'm glad I rented it though. It is a great movie and I would have wanted to see it again anyway.
It was sad though. I spoke with many of my friends after seeing it the second time and told them about it. They just looked at me and said, "Red Corner? What's that?" I was sad that most of my friends have never seen such a great movie! Gere and Bai's performances were wonderful! It is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I hope my friends eventually see it and if you haven't, you should.
