Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
A worthy addition to the saga
My first impulse, of course, is to compare it to the rest of the Wars movies. This movie does live up to it's name, but I must say that the first three were overall slightly better.
The story of The Phantom Menace is quite good, but nothing more. The Tatooine part, for example, contributes nothing much to the overall story (except for Anakin himself) and drags a bit (although it is overly enjoyable).
The effects of Phantom Menace, however, far surpass those of the earlier films. Simply put, they are breath-taking. The audience is treated to wondrous vista after wondrous vista.
I have nothing to reproach on the acting; it was good all over, except for the Queen, who seemed a little shallow at times.
All in all, a very good movie. If you weren't sure whether the hype was worth it, well, it is.
Killing Time (1998)
Seems like just a shallow attempt at making a quick buck...
Yikes. I'd seen the movie at the video store with a friend a while back, and the attractive cover and title made us want to rent it. We finally did, and luckily it wasn't so bad, but only because I had low expectations. The story's a bit shaky, the effects are bad, and you'll notice that they didn't hire even one extra for this movie. The cast is a bunch of unknowns (although it is a British flick, and I live in Canada - for all I know they're big stars overseas) and the poor directorial job makes me want to stay away from this guy's work.
The movie did have it's moments, however, but only because it's so bad it's funny. It also has a good Portishead tune in it that's quite enjoyable. So if you're in a mellow mood, you've got a few bucks to flame and an hour and a half to kill, rent this movie. It'll make you shake your head wondering why this movie was ever made, but at least you'll have a smile on your face. Otherwise, avoid it like the plague.
