Withnail and I (1987)
Wonderful!!
This film is one of my favourite comedy films. It is a shining tribute to the ability of British film-makers and actors.
I first saw this film shortly after it's release in the UK. Several years later, I bumped into a bloke in a pub who was shouting out things like "How DARE you!! and "Don't attempt anything without the gloves!". At this point, I realised how wide-spread the film's reputation was. Then, some trendy in a London magazine got whiff of "W & I" and that was it.
Anyway, I highly recommend this film to anyone who appreciates subtle wit, irony, poignancy and outright belly-aching uproar in a film. It beats virtually any comedy output by Hollywood in recent times and it hasn't aged since it was made.
All the actors, whether in a main or supporting role, contribute well. There are so many scenes that you miss the first time that you could watch it twice back-to-back and still enjoy it.
Who knows how well it would have been received on both sides of the Atlantic if it had been handled like "Waking Ned Devine"?
A masterpiece.
Wild Side (1995)
Isn't it a shame when bad things happen to good celluloid?
What were they thinking? This film was one of the most fetid offerings I've seen for quite a while. The film is like a porno, with almost all the sex taken out and if you sit through it just to watch the lesbian scene then you're really in trouble. The film has a crazy plot and is distinguished only by the fact that it's the only film I recall where ALL the actors seem equally uncomfortable/inept.
Why does Mr. Walken's character start each of his scenes reeling off a string of numbers into a phone? Does he EVER leave the house? Also, when I opened a bank account, I got a cheque-book and a wallet. I guess lesbian sex isn't part of the new account package until you pony up 75 Grand.
Finally, I pity Christopher Walken - being dressed up as a cross between one of the Karamazov brothers and Noel Coward must have hurt.
