The Replacement Killers (1998)
Flashy, fast paced, flying bullet-fest
What a stylish movie. Great visuals, great sound (including background music), and great cast. Chow Yun-Fat is electrifying as a hired killer under obligation to a Chinatown kingpin. In his U.S. film debut, he shows immense promise. Is Mira Sorvino THE hottest woman on the screen these days? My vote is: ABSOLUTELY!!! She does a great job as hostage turned partner. In true John Woo fashion, he's a producer this time, this movie has more flying bullets than any action flick around, save for Woo's own movies. It has enough action to downplay Micheal Rooker's sub-par performance. A great movie for fans of intense gunplay...
The Negotiator (1998)
Tense, Thrilling, and Quick paced
With Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey could this flick go wrong? A taut thriller showcasing one man's last attempt at revealing the truth, the film never lets up. Kevin Spacey is just outstanding (as always) as the negotiator requested by Jackson. Jackson himself also gives an outstanding performance as the negotiator at the end of his rope. The rest of the cast puts in a pretty good performance, but the two stars really steal the show. A good flick all around...
L.A. Confidential (1997)
A film buff's opinion
With an excellent storyline, and top-notch performances by Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito, and an awesome role by James Cromwell make this film one of the most exciting and satisfying police flicks to come along in a long time. The feel, the look, the action, it's all there.
The Babysitter (1995)
The Babysitter
I don't know if I didn't "get" what the director was going for, or the director failed to deliver his vision (my vote). Although I'd watch Alicia Silverstone in an insurance info-mercial, this movie never got any steam going. Making for an amazing let down at the film's end. The story, although plausible (I certainly fantasize about Alicia Silverstone), it is pretty pointless. A good cast wasted. I can not think of a more frustrating film. All the ingredients are there: good actors, a usable plot, and a suspenseful look to the film. The damn thing never delivers. Only recommended for die-hard Alicia Silverstone or J.T.Walsh fans, just to get a fix on your favorite star.
