Bottom: 'S Out (1995)
Possibly one of the best episodes out there
It has all the ingredients that all the other Bottom episodes have. Lots of (very much fake) violence, foul language, dirt, 'a hint of' sex, and of course Ade and Rik - may he rest in peace. Nothing more, nothing less, although this episode stands out as one of the best. It's also one of the very few episodes that doesn't take place at the flat, but in a sad excuse for a park around where the guys live.
I've had it lying around on VHS ever since it was first broadcast way back in the mid 90s, and it still makes tears come to my eyes from laughing.
The type of humour Rik and Ade bring in Bottom is hit or miss, but if it's hit, it's pretty much like that dart in the back of Rik's head... spot on!
Prometheus (2012)
If you're expecting Ridley Scott's Alien...
... do not go see Prometheus. The storyline is pretty much a joke, the character development is very shallow, the action sequences are highly predictable, and the list goes on. What we kept thinking all through the movie was: what was on Ridley Scott's mind when he agreed to do this? Is he really getting too old to make a Good Movie? I'm not much of a writer, but frankly: even I could have come up with a better script. Take Alien, mix it with any dumb action movie made in the past 10 years, throw in some faux Kubrick, served by good to great actors in bad roles and you get Prometheus. Thankfully we still have Alien, which remains one of the best movies ever made. Unfortunately, Prometheus is to Alien what a Happy Meal is to an exquisite dinner at a three star restaurant.
Theo & Thea (1985)
Taboos & absurdity
Originally made as one of the Dutch progressive tv network VPRO's youth programmes, T&T was aimed at kids between ages 7 and 14, broadcast on Wednesdays and later Sundays. Most Theo & Thea broadcasts revolved around the two main characters - Theo and Thea, obviously - treating some of life's issues and even taboos, in their own naive, wacky and humorous way, from a kids' point of view. Prostitution, death, euthanasia, depression, lesbianism and nudism were just a few of the topics. Every episode ended with Theo & Thea asking the camera/audience "so, did you find out what this episode was about?" A truly iconic liberal, 1980s tv show, answering some of kids' questions about life.
C'era una volta il West (1968)
Magnificent
This film is perfect in every aspect. The actors all gave once in a lifetime performances, and they couldn't have been cast better. Leone gave us some of the most powerful (conversation-less) images in cinema history. So little conversation, and so much information, emotion and action at the same time, also thanks to the marvelous soundtrack. Enough superlatives, to sum them all up: this is truly one of the best films ever made, and many great directors are in debt to it, and to Leone.
As someone posted before me: a true opera western :) Not the most accessible movie *at all*, but for those who do 'get it', and know how hard it is to create all this based on the text in a script... a masterpiece!
