Dry Episode 1 but very interesting Episode 2

The history of the Panama Canal post-construction with particular attention to the handover of the Canal by the USA to Panama. Episode 2 shows the Panama Canal expansion project, which built a third set of locks to handle bigger ships.

I watched this thinking it was about the initial construction of the Panama Canal. It's not. Episode 1 covers the political wrangling regarding who should own and control the canal and the eventual handover of the canal by the USA to Panama in 1999. Episode 2 covers the subsequent Panama Canal expansion project.

Episode 1 is quite a dry affair, as most documentaries centred almost entirely on politics would be. Not entirely boring, but hardly riveting viewing.

Episode 2, on the other hand, is very interesting. Now it's about engineering, a much more interesting subject. We see the scale of the expansion project, the science, innovation and vision required to plan and complete it and the obstacles that had to be overcome. In addition, we see what the expansion means for Panama and world commerce.
