I'm a big big fan of plots circling in on friendships, so seeing these two characters Marvin and Joey interacting and experiencing conflict in such a real way was quite exciting to watch. It reminded me of a lot of the "friendship breakups" that I've experienced over my past life, and seeing that reflected so well in Space Waves was affirming in a way. Especially them ending on bittersweet terms, it's upsetting but in the best way possible because UGH. It's so REAL!
I feel like the drama outdoes the comedy in this film. Don't get me wrong, there were a few scenes and lines that got me to smile or giggle audibly, but some of the more "humorous" scenes were cornier than I assume they were intended to be. The whole news segment scene and the montage following was kind of hard to watch (the scene with the elderly couple was funny though). The potty jokes were a hit-or-miss. Got old pretty quickly, but it's not overbearing.
Plot and writing aside, I love the outfits, and the soundtrack. Definitely getting 80s feels, as other reviewers are mentioning. I'm an 80s aesthetic enthusiast, so those aspects of the film were super fun for me. I'm not sure if I would call it nostalgia since, to me, it seems more like a modern take on the 80s, but still super cool nonetheless.
The cinematography was awesome. Whoever is manning and directing the cameras and shots knows how to engage the audience with good placement.
The acting from the younger cast was brilliant too. Adult actors were pretty spotty, but it is what it is. There were only three or four scenes where the bad acting took away from the story.
Really great stuff from the cast and crew! The final product is surprisingly good and captivating for it's budget, and I would recommend Space Waves to those looking for new coming-of-age films to watch.
