A Slice of Life

Except in a minimal manner this episode does not progress the story, as it is, along in any way. Its what could be called a filler episode. There is nothing wrong with this and one of the best episodes in the 2nd season is a filler episode, which is the episode Okabe flips time lines to interact with Kurisu. However in this case this episode is not one of the good ones. Its focuses on Suzuha, Hashida and Yuki and I expect is an attempt to flesh out the character of Yuki and WW3 Suzuha, but its not very compelling. The episode is watchable and after you have watched it you can pretty much ignore most of it as you progress down the main story arc. My personal theory is the 2nd season attempts to develop too many characters, introducing four major characters. Moho, Kagari, Yuki and Leskinen and fleshing out WW3 Suzuha. Remember the Suzuha from the 1st season is the SERN Suzuha, this version is different. At the same time they try to maintain the existing characters. I think Leskinen is done well and is adequate, considering his role it works. Moho only just gets over the line, but poor Yuki does not. Even SERN Suzuha only just gets over the line. As for Kagari, she is a major fail as well. Just getting over the line does not make a great series, which is one issue. The 2nd issue is the main chemistry in Steins Gate is the interaction between Okabe and Kurisu. You saw is on episode 8, which was brilliant. While Kurisu was death, Amadeus could be become her replacement and I think it would have worked very well. Instead we got Moho, sort of, and a minimised Amadeus. I understand they were trying to change the series so you got something different, but that was achieved by having a normal and depressing Okabe. Leskinen was essential and a much cut down Moho would be require, as someone to assist Okebe with Amadeus. Kagari and Yuki could have easily been cut out. Replacing this would have allowed more focus on Okeba and Amadeus as well as greater focus on the other regular characters, especially Faris. But do not despair; what we have in front of us is still a good episode. Not a great one, but good enough to get back to the main story arc and a lot most excitement to come.
