Well, this was, uhm, something...

I stumbled upon the 2021 horror mystery "If She Screams" by random luck here late in 2022. Needless to say that I had never heard about the movie, but I was somewhat intrigued by the movie's cover. And with it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to give it a chance.

Writer Judah Ray managed to churn out a script and storyline that fell entirely short of entertaining me. There was nothing interesting going on in the storyline, and the narrative fell into a slump and never really picked up momentum. And I have to say that the flaccid character gallery and amateurish acting performances weren't exactly doing their part to sell director Stephen Garnett's movie.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in "If She Screams", but what I witnessed on the screen wasn't exactly top of the line performances. Normally I do enjoy watching unfamiliar and new talents on the screen, as they are not associated with other movies and previously portrayed characters, but I have to say that I found no enjoyment in "If She Screams".

For a horror movie then director Stephen Garnett wasn't exactly hitting a home run. This was a somewhat amateurish attempt at making a horror movie. There was nothing scary or worthwhile about this ordeal of a movie.

My rating of "If She Screams" lands on a two out of ten stars.

Scream your head off
BandSAboutMovies9 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Kassi (Romy Boloix) needs money, so she starts working in a weed greenhouse, but the owner is soon murdered and she goes on the run directly into the curse -- that we learn about in a flashback to the 1800s that has prominent cell phone towers present -- that haunts the mountain.

Director Stephen Garnett's IMDB bio states that he's "known for developing talent and creative collaborations with the top branding companies in the world and working with artists of all walks of life." That slickness extends to this film.

I heard a debate today about whether or not movies can be exploitation today and yet still feel ethically acceptable to view. That's a good question and I think that there really isn't a filmmaker ready to go full Bruno Mattei any longer.

This is a fine movie, but never goes fully into the muck of a woman seeking revenge film. Maybe we've evolved past that, but we should still strive to entertain.

What's the number for 911

Warning: Spoilers
Kassi (Romy Boloix) needs money and is convinced by her friends to go to NoCal and work in a weed greenhouse for Sasha (Matt Gorkis). Once Sasha is killed the girls run off to one disaster after another. The film includes flashbacks to a few centuries earlier to the cause of the curse that haunts the mountain. One girl reminded me of Shari Moon Zombie. Mostly is a bunch of exposed cleavage running through the woods.

The story line wasn't that great. Never got to know the characters, most on screen for one scene.

Guide: F-word. Sex. Brief shower nudity (Romy Boloix)

The ABSOLUTE bottom of the barrel
haskel-7295128 September 2021
I've been waiting for this to finally be reviewable. This is hands down the worst movie I have ever seen. Lazy writing, hack directing, pathetic and senseless plot, less-than-amateur acting, meat cleaver editing...this one has every flaw imaginable. It's not "so bad it's good" it's so bad it hurts. The showstopper: the flashback chase scene set in the 1800s that has cell towers blinking in the background and an airplane overhead. You can't make this up. There is literally not one single second of this that isn't horrendous. No one involved with this mess should EVER be allowed to work in film again in any capacity. EVER. It is that bad. Don't believe me? Go ahead and watch. Don't say I didn't warn you.

TRASH
FranticBen10 December 2021
I just wasted 7 bucks hiring this absolute shocker of a 'film'. Almost every detail was terrible. The 'acting' was appalling, the 'dialogue' was woeful and it felt like a cheap porn director was at the helm.

Do something better with your money ... Maybe just throw it in the bin (which is where this movie belongs).

First time I've thrown away a bluray
bcraig-539495 November 2022
This was by far the worst movie I have ever sat through. I only paid $1.25 for it and I feel disgusted that I was ripped off. Flashback was laughable, horrible editing, horrible cinematography, and the director clearly had no concept of filmmaking. Acting was horrible. Just a stupid film. I don't believe in book burning and respect everyone has different tastes, but it actually felt good to throw the disc away instead of donating it. Just really baaaaaaad. I watched it till the end just to see if there was anything redeemable about it, and the end was just as inconsistent and disrespectful to filmmaking as any of the rest of the film.

Omg awful

This was just God Awful. Seriously, did a five year old write this? It was just just horrible. Just when you think Hollywood cant make a worse movie then the last, some clown writer and director say hold my beer. Plus the casting people should be banned from Hollyweird. Nowhere in the cast is there a Heather or was there any reference to a Yoga Girl lmao. This whole movie was just so bad with zero direction. You spend the whole movie wondering what in the heck was the party in the beginning about. Then they finally answer that nonsense in the end, but it's just so stupid. Cracks me up fools gave this a 10. One clown said the marissa stole the show. I dont think so. They should have shown Audrey neal and Lily naked and i wouldve gave this a two.

Very great Horror film

Loved it. Every bit of it. Great acting, directing and lots of really great scenes. Overall for a independent movie I thought it was very well done compared to alot of the stuff that comes out every week in Hollywood.

Aims high -- doesn't quite reach it, but still not bad...
stevesinger-200111 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"If She Screams" aims high, and while it doesn't really achieve what it's trying to do, it still is pretty entertaining while at the same time being a bit of a mess.

The basic plot of the movie -- although we will be taking many plot detours along the way -- involves Kassi (Romy Boloix), a struggling actress in Hollywood who is about to get evicted from her apartment. Her friend Christiana convinces her to join another women (Marissa) to go help a weed farmer take care of his crops. Once they get there, the combination of the very shady farmer and some home invaders have our three heroines on the run, where things go from bad to worse...

"If She Screams" aims high -- probably too high for a little low budget film. In addition to the main plot, there is a supernatural subplot about evil walking the woods and flashbacks to the 1800's to show its genesis, and nother involving Kassi's mother trying to find her because she hasn't heard from her in a couple of hours. The movie also has a time loop in it, although you probably wouldn't notice because there's so much else going on.

If it had been simplified a bit, it would have been more effective. The three girls are put through a gauntlet, going from one bad situation to another, and that was pretty effective and focussing more on that part of the movie would have been preferable. But what's good is quite good, to be honest -- the girls' predicaments are pretty harrowing and powerful, and some of that is due to the nice performance of Romy Boloix. This appears to be her sole credit, and whereas most actors in roles like this tend to over-emote (and her two co-stars do that a-plenty) there is something surprisingly believable about her in the situations. I was pretty impressed, and hopefully she gets more work. The film has some good gore scenes, and all the woman are extremely attractive. And at a little less than 90 minutes, it never overstays its welcome. It betrays its low budget often (some sound issues, and let's just say the flashbacks to the 1800's probably shouldn't have been films outside where you can see modern things), but overall not a terrible way to spend some time.

Horror comedy with a plot that keeps the viewer curious
BrutusRider8 November 2022
I decided to review as most reviews are not doing justice to this. It is a watchable Horror comedy with a decent plot that keeps you interested. The acting, editing, is according to the budget, and watchable.

Cleavage is shown at regular intervals. The plot line intertwines the present time with a similar event that had happened 2 centuries back. There are regular flashbacks which makes the story more interesting.

I was expecting to liberally use fast forward button, but the plot-line kept me intrigued to know what happens next. There is never a dull moment in the film and it continues moving at a decent pace. The lead actress is pretty and keeps the viewer interested. Being a horror genre fan, I can see several ways to improve the film, but it is what it is at this budget.

Overall rating : 6/10.
