Did they even watch the season?
XweAponX12 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The whole reason why the Russian base is underneath the Starcourt Mall was explained in great detail, including how it even got there in the first place, including the reasons why it had to happen.

But in order to know this information, you kind of have had to watch this season and the appropriate episodes. Some of my fellow reviewers here, the impression I get is that they simply wrote a review without knowing what was actually going on in the show. Hence the bulleted lists of complaints, without giving honest critical reasons about them. In fact, both seasons one and two have heavy references to "Russians". So when Russians finally show up, they think that is unrealistic? Nope. Not in the context of this show.

This is a show about the 80s. Remember the 80s? Did you live through the 80s? I did. Movies were made upon the same exact premise as this, and they were immensely popular.

Red Dawn. It was referred to in season two. So if we were fans of the show, we knew that something like this was going to happen in the show. And because I paid attention in season two I was not surprised when the Russians showed up in season three.

How did the Russians get away with building a secret base down there? I don't know, how did Hawkins lab do it? They had a virtual labyrinth underneath their building. Yet nobody complained about that.

There is nothing going on here but a 100% accurate depiction of the anti-Russian paranoia of the 80s, and what better way to do that other than to have a secret Russian base underneath Starcourt? With the complicity of the mayor of Hawkins, even?

It may not be something that actually could have happened, but in fact it is something that has been fictionalized and written about, in books and film all through the 80's, especially during the years depicted in this season. So when it comes to a show about the 80s, this falls into line with other books and films and TV shows, from the 80s that would show things like this happening. And if you don't believe me, go back in time and watch shows like Magnum PI, MacGyver, Rockford files, and those were considered "serious" shows.

Now my favorite part of course was the musical interlude with Dustin and Suzy, that's all I will say about it. Of course it's ridiculous. I think people take, not this show, but their complaints about the show way too seriously, and this is the Duffer brothers saying "we don't care". But while they complain about this, they are forgetting that the actors themselves did their own singing and the writers of the soundtrack played the music underneath. And it was a solid performance. And of course it's ridiculous, you just have to get over yourself. This is the third year in a row where these kids from Hawkins Indiana basically save the world as we knew it In the 80's. They are a magnet for the upside down and for the Flayer. And now we know that there are more holes into the upside down in other parts of the world.

As far as this episode and the season as a whole, as I mentioned before the 80s especially during that time represented a lot of change, and these kids are teenagers now. A lot has happened since season one, and things are just not the same. If you can't accept that, then walk away from the show. Earlier, we saw Will the Wise destroy his own fort, in a rejection of everything that he loved before he got trapped in the upside down. That's how much he had been affected by these events. If we don't feel right about our characters in season three, it's only because they don't feel comfortable with themselves either and they are doing a good job of making us feel that way too. Meaning the actors that portray them, and the writers of the show, are all doing their jobs because everybody is reacting exactly as expected. We aren't supposed to be comfortable with this.

What we have seen in this season accurately shows what happens when kids grow up and they start dating, and the mistakes that parents make as well as the mistake that kids make. In fact a lot of the problems that come up are because everybody is separated, out doing their own thing. They are not talking to each other on their walkie-talkies like they used to do in the first two seasons, and so we have our characters spread out all across a map, not talking to each other, and each of them have a piece of the conundrum of this season.

It is not until they finally all gather together in Hoppers cabin, together at last for the first time since being in the theater in episode one, and they are finally able to put it all together and start coming up with solutions.

Hopper and Joyce with Murray and Smirnoff in tow, have the last piece of the puzzle. Smirnoff didn't make it into this episode, but his knowledge did.

And we finally see here the direct connection to seasons one and two. What are the Russians doing? I don't know, what was Hawkins lab doing? What did they use Eleven to do? How did Eleven fix that in season two?

It's all related.

Now, Hopper. I don't want to believe he's gone either, but at this point we don't know. All we know is that there are other places in the world where this kind of stuff was happening, so I am looking forward to the next season where they have to go to some of those places.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode, the strongest of the season in my opinion, had it all, Scary moments, funny moments, sad moments, exciting moments. It was jam packed full of greatness! A lot of people may be upset about hoppers death, and it was very sad. But characters die! It's what makes a tv show better and more meaningful! Also there even is a chance that he is still alive. In the post credit scene they mention there being an American prisoner. Could be hopper! An exciting episode with an enticing cliff hanger! Excited for season 4!

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE

This episode shows why Stranger Things is legitimately one of the greatest shows ever put out. By far the most emotional episode of the entire series. The last few minutes hit you so hard and I can not wait to see what season 4 brings. Best episode of the show hands down.

A chaotic end
remyrc6 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have no idea whether it's something wrong with me or not but something hasn't quite clicked for me not only for this finale, but the entire season. The show looks brilliant, the sound track is ridiculously fitting and memorable but the story just seems...all over the place. One of the things that made Stranger Things so great was the character dynamics as well as the unpredictable plot. It had you hooked from the beginning to the end. This season however, I can't recall a single thing that you can consider a plot twist or unpredictable. While this isn't something that is a definite negative in and of itself, for a show like this it is. This was however, not my only issue with the season as well as the finale. Things are getting quite frankly, ridiculous. I can hardly ever feel invested in most of the action scenes because of how unbelievable they are. All the characters seem to have pretty thick plot armour. Every movie and show has its own in-universe laws, rules and consistency. For example in Star Wars, even though we know people can lift objects with their mind, you can't chop off someone's head and they stay alive. This is my issue with this show and the finale. I can't recall just how many times our protagonists were in danger and they somehow escaped in the nick of time. Now you can do this once or twice every so often but when you do it so so many times during an episode it becomes hard to be invested. I don't want to sound too negative as I love the show. El, Joyce and Steve are characters I absolutely adore and want them to just live normal and happy lives so when they are in danger I naturally worry and pray they don't get killed. The problem is when you abuse people's investment in characters by constantly putting them in danger and situations that they shouldn't survive but they somehow do seemingly every time, why would I worry?

The ending could have been great but the only thing that got me in the feels were some people saying goodbye, even though I know they'll probably be back together. I don't for one second believe in the death at the climax and them dying would be a bigger surprise than being alive. Also I'm not crazy about this entire Russian plot, it's very cartoonish and not in a believable or fun way. I can't say I'm as excited for season 4 as I was for mainly 2 but also for 3.

Heart Breaking END
mgidb22 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
You know what since the death of Hank character in Breaking Bad I used to see the main characters killed whom we all loved.. It's seems that this is the strategy the writer and directors are agreeing on. Hoper will remain the best rule on this show no matter how it far goes in seasons.. His letter broke my heart "FEELINGS" Heart to Heart.. But, please, if you don't mind, for the sake of your poor old dad, keep the door open three inches.

I'm speechless...
aravinth-4672914 September 2021
Just Wow...After having finished the finale 2 hours ago, I'm still recovering from the straight chills I experienced the whole episode. I honestly don't think my jaw has dropped so many times within the space of an hour. From start to finish it was PERFECT, resulting in a spectacular blend of action, suspense, drama, romance and emotion. I was skeptical for a couple months before watching the show; after all, heavy sci-fi and horror especially was never my genre. But I can comfortably say that deciding to watch Stranger Things was the best choice ever, and my clear FAVOURITE among all the series I've watched. Another thing I struggle to comprehend is how all THREE seasons were mind-bogglingly brilliant and consistent. In fact, I thought the each season was bigger and better than the previous. Yes, I completely understand that numerous older viewers had a distaste for the comedic and more light hearted tone of season 3, but I ABSOLUTELY loved it. Being a teen of 16 years old, I found the whole season hilarious, yet it still matched the overarching suspense, thriller and intensity from season 1 and season 2. But Chapter 8 : The Battle of Starcourt truly blew my socks off in ways that I didn't think was possible from this show. I await season 4 (impatiently) and hope to tag along with the Stranger Things for at least a few more years. Thank god I watched this series very late, I couldn't begin to bear waiting 3 YEARS.

Spectacular battle
TheLittleSongbird13 November 2022
On the whole, Season 3 was a big disappointment. Whereas Seasons 1 and 2 had almost all their episodes being good to brilliant (with only one misstep in Season 2), pretty much half of Season 3 was less than decent (with the premiere being particularly disappointing) with only two episodes being outstanding and another two being good but not great. On the whole, the suspense and tension weren't as strong, the advancement of plotting and characters only came in spurts and some of the writing was surprisingly juvenile.

Part of me was actually expecting quite a lot from "Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt", despite the season not being up to top standard. Primarily because the previous two seasons had absolutely brilliant season finales. "Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt" is every bit as brilliant thankfully and is at its best spectacular. It is one of only two outstanding episodes from Season 3, the other being "Chapter Four: The Sauna Test", and gets my vote as the best episode of the season. Everything that a season finale should be and it improves pretty much on everything that was disappointing about most of the season.

Had no issues with almost any element here, other than the slightly out of place musical number that should have been featured in another part of the episode or excised. That though was not enough to mar the episode, not when the execution of everything was as good as it was.

The visuals are of outstanding quality. Very stylish and atmospheric, with some truly beautiful images that one can't believe such high quality comes from a Netflix show. Not to mention the highly impressive special effects that put a good deal of big budget films in recent years to shame. The music has a wonderful 80s nostalgic vibe while also being quite haunting, enhancing the atmosphere beautifully. The performances are excellent across the board, absolutely no sore spot in this aspect.

Character development is illuminating and investable in one of the few episodes of the season to advance any of the characters in progression. Hopper is at his most interesting all season here and is closer to the older Hopper than the less appealing one he was this season. Writing has lost none of its brains and heart, while there is an ominous creepiness there is some genuinely funny and gentle humour, an affectionate nostalgia and poignancy without any cheese or melodrama. The story is darkly suspenseful with plenty going on (without being too crowded).

With the ending being very exciting and emotionally powerful. The tragic elements here are very shocking and also heart-breaking, not feeling like a cheap way of getting rid of a maligned character or feeling abrupt and indicative of an actor being fired mid season as has happened with some shows. There is plenty of depth and complexity in the mystery.

Spectacular season finale and it was a shame that most of the previous episodes of the season were not indicative of how good 'Stranger Things' was at its best. 10/10.

The acting, cinematography and music in this season is phenomenal. The emotion is breathtaking, and the ending (and cliffhanger) was absolutely perfect. I watched this in less than a day and I have no regrets. I don't think I can wait 2 years for season 4!!

A shocking conclusion to a great season
Splarke224 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
3x08 is a crazy, thrilling, shocking ending to what was a fantastic Season 3! My biggest (and probably only) gripe with the episode is the cringy forced musical in the smack middle of the action between Dustin and Suzie, it absolutely wasn't needed at all. What shocked me the most was the fact they actually (seemingly) killed off Hopper, something I didn't think they'd do until at least the final season of the show. Billy's death was very sad also, but expected with how the season's plot was going. The after credits scene is a complete game changer also, with a *potential* hint at Hopper maybe being alive as a prisoner in Russia (they mentioned an American prisoner, but didn't reveal who it was!). All in all, this was a great but heartbreaking way to conclude the season. I'm eagerly awaiting Season 4!

Mixed feelings about the whole season but especially this episode
heikkto1 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I kind of wanted to give even less stars then seven, just for the fact that this season was for me constantly balancing on the ledge of being awesome and being a silly letdown, and the last episode could have redeemed it but it pushed it a little bit more on the latter side.

The beginning of the whole season created a great mysterious and exciting atmosphere where there was enough space for details and suspense. In the last few episodes there was so much happening, especially so many tight escapes and plot-armour moments, that I kind of stopped caring what was happening.

I think the action scenes have been by far the weakest spot of the series all in all, and the last episodes, especially BoS had a lot of them. I get that they are meant to create suspense and emotions and be sometimes metaphorical, I'm not looking for complete realism, but most scenes here just have characters acting completely ridiculously and that ruins the atmosphere for me. Why didn't the russian shoot Hopper and Joyce when he obviously could have? What was up with the ridiculous leg on throat thing? Why is the huge mind-flayer-monster so weak and useless? Why did Billy let Mike and Max survive when he could have snapped their necks in two seconds? Why did he not kill El if that was the plan all along? The illogicalities are so obvious that they distract you from enjoying the show.

Some thoughts on the plot: The russians under Starcourt gave a nice opportunity for new and exciting storylines but I wish the russians wouldn't have been so caricature-like. The plot could have been the same for them, just the atmosphere would have been less idiotic. Robin being gay was surprising and I think was a good move, it's just that it didn't really fit with her earlier comments. What I liked though is that the plot never lost traction, all of the episodes had purpose and served the whole. The frame for the ending, the fourth of july fair, was great but the plot came together a bit predictably. I was left hoping for a satisfying revelation but there was nothing to reveal.

For me season three was good entertainment, it had its moments like the rodent investigation plot and made nice work of picturing the shift from kids to teenagers and from high school to "real life". What left it below the first two- especially the first - seasons was illogical characters and silly action, and a below par plot ending. BoS managed to tell the story to an end in a somewhat satisfying way, but it had the chance to be much better.

One more thing I have to mention is that the product placement in the whole season was super nasty and out of place.

Total letdown compared to the other seasons
vicaramelie9 July 2019
The entirity of this third season, including this episode, is so far below the standard previously set by this show. It's full of goofy, childish humor, there's absolutely nothing scary or mysterious about it, characters act in completely illogical ways, and the plot is riddled with Hollywood cliches. It's like the writers just gave up or wanted to rush the season's completion.

There's no awareness of the audience who watches this show. Thriller fanatics enjoy it - not children.

Good season, overall
schroederagustavo6 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I would give this season a solid 9/10 rating. I understand the criticisms behind it, some of them being how this season felt a little too tame, too funny compared to say the darker first season. I get that. However, I do think that the humor that they went for in this season fits the characters' age very well, as well as the summer environment. I think they did a great job with this, since this really feels like a character driven season and since that has always been the thing that's interested me the most about the show (way more than the supernatural stuff), I give this season a pass and am still interested in what they do with Season 4, which has just been announced.

I'd say the acting is really good overall, although I do think the kid who plays Will is the weakest of the actors in the series, I think Winona Ryder is a good actress but I've never loved her in this series, since she seems a little too one-dimensional for me and it's like she always has the same worried/surprised expression on her face. I think some of the "romantic" stuff between her and Hopper felt like a little too soap opera or from a worse show. And of course, they leave that opportunity open in the end for Hop to be a prisoner in a Soviet prison or whatever. I don't really know what to think about that, I think it's cool to have Hopper around, since he's one of the best characters in my opinion and always has interesting stuff to do. However keeping him alive kind of takes away the stakes of one of the main characters being able to die. We'll see. Billy is dead, which is kind of a bummer because he's been one of my favorite characters since he first showed up in Season 2 and I also think he's one of the best actors in the show. I really liked what they did with the Russian scientist, Alexei and his death was also kind of sad, really, which I did not expect from a secondary character who doesn't speak English. The Terminator stuff was a little too much for me, and was also one of the weaker parts of this season. I think they were a little too on the nose with that reference.

But overall, solid season and looking forward for more.

A spectacular season climax.
cruise0120 August 2019
Episode 3.08 (5 out of 5 stars).

The season finale delivers with a bang. It is action packed, exciting, emotional, and it has some fun humor. The battle is spent at the starcourt mall. Eleven and her friends trying to escape the mind flayer. Dustin, Steve, Robin, and Erica are trying to get a signal out to Hopper and Joyce as they go down underground to shut down the portal. The episode is big and epic. Without giving away spoilers. There is a lot going on and the climax delivers. The visual effects are awesome. The kids using fireworks to fight against the mind flayer in the mall. Billy also plays a factor in this battle. And the big bad Russian guy that is chasing Hopper down comes face to face in an exciting climax. The epilogue does conclude this season well. Be aware for a mid credit scene that sets up for another season. The episode does have a fun moment with Dustin trying to get out from a friend and needs to sing out loud a theme song from The Neverending Story which was funny and cute. While characters lives are at stake with running away from the Mind flayer. Definitely, the episode ends with an epic bang of excitement and thrills with the characters we love.

Stranger Things Season 3 overall rating 5 out of 5 stars. This season is fast paced with characters and the story taking them on separate paths and reuniting them in the climax for a showdown with the mind flayer. The story is darker, nostalgic, and action packed. The music soundtrack is awesome with its 80s track. I loved every moment with this season all while having an emotional impact with the characters. Season 3 is awesome, fun, and exciting as the eight episodes moves at a brisk pace and a lot going on with the characters and story.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a masterpiece, the music and video create an immersive world unlike any other. The subplots all come together in a dazzling finale to this season. Billy's death was heart-wrenching because we see this fun and happy side to him in his memories, and all you can really think about is that young boy from California sacrificing himself to the hands of the Mind-Flayer. But of course, the saddest death was Hopper, who finally had everything going for him until his death. The raw emotion of Joyce killing Hopper when they could finally be happy together. You feel like you can't cry anymore, but then Joyce, Will, Johnathon, and Eleven move the the city, and you just breakdown in tears. Season 3 ended superbly, and the mid-credits scene promises a thrilling season 4 and potential fate for Hopper.

People like to complain, they always do. They hated the two seasons because they considered it childish because no major characters die, and now they did it and EVERYONE IS UPSET. Ignore the negative review. If you're a real fan you'll enjoy this awesome season, great performances by everyone. The duffer Brothers proved that change is sometimes good. And this time it's great

Perfect way to end a Great Season.
dustycaldwell30 December 2020
I know that season 3 can me a little much at times, but there is no denying that this was the perfect way to end season 3. It shows that the stakes are high. The kids aren't invincible anymore and they show that by billy hitting Mike and Max. I knew that nobody was going to die in previous seasons, but I truly thought one of that anyone could of died. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time watching this. The end of the episode leaves you excited for Season Four, while making you ball your eyes out. The was truly a fine piece of work. Thank you Duffers.

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was a pretty emotionally devastating and satisfying to the season. Each season has a really solid final episode or two, and this one is no exception. Seeing 11 read the note Hopper wrote for her was very devastating. Hopper's death itself was also surprisingly well-handled (even though he's clearly coming back for the last season).

This episode had some really good comedic moments, really good scary moments, great intensity, and some very good performances from absolutely everybody. That's pretty much how I felt about the whole season. It wasn't perfect, it started off slow and there were a handful of lines and earlier plot points that didn't do anything for me, but by the end, I was pretty content. This season ditched its mystery and intrigue and went right for horror and violence and I was fine with it.

So yeah, not for everybody. I get the criticism, but the good outweighed all of the bad for me this girl around. It'll be interesting to see where the last season goes.

Overrated?
mariusaglen10 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm confused, normally I'm good at guessing what rating a show, or movie will get. But this time I was way off. The only reason I managed to watch through it was because I loved season 1. Season 2 was okay, but not as great as season 1. This just felt like a load of nonsense, like it tried to be a comedy. Most things doesn't make sense, no sense of real danger because every main character has plot armor till the very end, even then they could atleast have finished off a few kids. Also hate that most people seem to be over acting, always overdoing some expression. Monster has tons of chances killing people off but never do. Russian base, just go down there, you'll never get spotted. Oj the evil russians vs the heroic americans. Bleh. This show doesn't deserve the rating it's gotten. Should be rated much, much lower.

My 2 cents
