Often Funny, Never Credible
Minnesota_Reid13 April 2019
This movie is a very mixed bag. There are a good number of quite funny bits, and thanks to Audrey Tautou in a supporting role, a couple of genuinely touching moments. But the actions and reactions of the two main characters make absolutely no psychological sense at all, ever. If that doesn't put you off, then by all means see this movie for the many funny gags.

undoing wrongs

'En liberte!', The 2018 French comedy directed by Pierre Salvadori, opens with a scene that seems to be taken from an action movie with super-cops made in the 60s. The scene, in which a brave policeman neutralizes a large crowd of gangsters, a scene that is repeated with variations several times throughout the film, is actually the summary of the bed-time story told by the film's heroine, police lieutenant Yvonne Santi (Adele Haenel) to her son falls to have him fall asleep, recounting the heroism of her husband, also a police officer, who fell on the line of duty two years before. It so happens that Yvonne discovers the true face of her ex-husband: not a hero, but a corrupt policeman, who also destroyed the life of a young man named Antoine (Pio Marmai), whom he had innocently imprisoned. Antoine, wrongfully convicted, is on the verge of release. Policewoman Yvonne will try to make up for some of her husband's injustice. Is redemption possible?

'En liberte!', the French title of the film, can have several meanings in French. It literally means 'released', as Antoine finds himself, awaited by his wife Agnes (Audrey Tautou), free to resume his life from the point where it was interrupted by injustice. However, the second meaning would have been 'unleashed', also fit, because in prison Antoine had both accumulated anger for the years of his youth that he had been deprived of and had also learned violent methods to express his frustrations. Yvonne, who experiences her own frustrations and faces loneliness by refusing the advances of another fellow police officer, will try to fix what her missing husband had destroyed - Antoine's life. It is not an easy task, and the risk that the young man who went through the 'prison school' will be the one to draw the young police woman on the slope of mental imbalance and crime is permanently present.

The cast is blessed by the presence of Audrey Tautou in a supporting role, which she plays very well. What I found fascinating is the fact that the excellent actress Adele Haenel takes over exactly the type of heroine played by Tautou in some of the previous films - physical beauty doubled and amplified by an inner radiance and goodness, intelligence and emotional maturity that guides her in doing good to those around, sometimes in spite of themselves, risking and sacrificing a lot for others around. I had noticed first Adele Haenel in the film 'La fille inconue' by the Dardenne brothers, then I admired her in Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Her role in this film confirms to me that she is one of the most talented and full of personality actresses of her generation. The story, quite improbable in fact, manages to pass the screen due to her charm and the one of her partner Pio Marmai, and to the cinematic approach that is a combination of romantic movie and comedy with cops in the good French tradition of the gendarme from Saint Tropez movies, updated to today's realities of the cities on the French Riviera. 'En liberte!' it's a more than enjoyable movie and those looking for quality entertainment in the summer months can find it here.

Funny!

I wasn't expecting to laugh as much as I did. Adèle Haenel should do comedy more often. I really enjoyed her spontaneity and one-liners.

The critic review here says "This movie is a very mixed bag. There are a good number of quite funny bits, and thanks to Audrey Tautou in a supporting role, a couple of genuinely touching moments. But the actions and reactions of the two main characters make absolutely no psychological sense at all, ever. If that doesn't put you off, then by all means see this movie for the many funny gags." I couldn't agree more. My wife would have given it a minus so would my friend. His wife had a good time with it and I ,(the French man), was rather perplex about it. The gags were few and far from each others (yes I would not say either 'good number). I differ with the critic thinking that A Tautou was under used, so much for the support! But even if it did not much for me I found it quite original and thought it would be up some people's alley. My memory is not the best by now as such don't ask me about 'en liberte' tomorrow I won't remember it... if you know what I mean! PS Again you could not spoil it, it did a good job at it itself

Probably the worst movie I saw in years
costin20041 December 2018
The movie is being advertised in France as being "the best comedy of the year 2018" or "you will die laughing". In fact, I only smiled once. The rest of the people in the theater the same... Otherwise the movie is absolutely boring with an awful screenplay and with some scenes that could easily candidate to the worst moments in French Cinematography.

If you need a burlesque action comedy, "En Liberté!" is for you. From the beginning, it's full of action and crazy ideas, and constant surprises. The casting is absolutely top : especially Pio Marmaï as the framed innocent coming out of jail where he became crazy, the divine Adèle Haenel as the wife of the policeman who framed the innocent and tries to help him and Damien Bonnard falling in love with Adèle ; and Vincent Bossuet as the policeman's kid ... Don't miss that rich inventive punchy movie, also with great music (with two legendary groups). Pierre Salvadori did a fine work with his team, bravo.

Good comedy with a surprise ending
IndustriousAngel1 March 2020
Well, it's basically a simple romantic comedy (which the French are very good at) but it's got some not-so-funny themes - following the premise of a innocent but framed man spending 8 years in jail - which it manages to take a bit more serious than you'd expect from a pure comedy. Consequently, the ending is not quite what you'd expect - while most of the movie has some rather absurd scenes, the ending feels very grounded and shows respect to all of the characters. I liked that (it would have been easy for the screenwriters to create some miraculous happy ending but this one feels more satisfying).

This film tells the story of a widowed policewoman, who tries to make up for the wrongs that her husband did.

The story is quite crazy and unbelievable in a funny way. It is quite entertaining, and yet makes you question the choices of the policewoman at the same time.

Wunderbar

This is a great movie. Very refreshing and fun to watch. There's just so many new things I haven't watched in films. Every scene is somehow made entertaining. Even the 'Breaking the door' scenes which could get tiring at some point were dampened towards the end. Adele Haenel is realy really good . Loved her work!!

Great atypical comedy
guy-bellinger14 March 2021
The police lieutenant Yvonne Santi, cherishes the memory of Captain Santi, her late husband, a model of bravery and integrity. For her little boy Théo as well, Dad is his own personal Superman. One day, Yvonne learns that the "white knight" was in fact a dirty cop of the worst kind. Upset, she vows to devote the rest of her career to righting the wrongs committed by the captain.

A hilarious, sometimes almost burlesque, fast-paced comedy, "The Trouble with You" raises above this mere level by its unbelievable profusion and inventiveness. Of course the viewers laugh all the time but never stupidly because behind the entertaining story are hidden themes as serious as widowhood, the education of a child by a single woman, guilt and redemption of faults, the deleterious role of prison, true love. A mixture of registers that works perfectly despite the difficulty of the thing. In the same way, the "couple on the run" style detective story goes well with tenderness and poetry, which are particularly expressed during the love exchanges. Adèle Haenel (energetic as always, but also very feminine) and Pio Marmaï (a likeable mad dog with astonishing fits of uncontrolled violence) help Salvadori in his approach. In the end, a great atypical film not to be missed.

Quirky and madcap French tale.
TxMike1 August 2020
The basic premise of the story and developments are on this IMDb page summary for this movie. It features good actors who play their roles very well. Although it is made by completely different filmmakers, in tone and quirkiness it often reminded me of "Amelie", and it even has Audrey Tautou playing one of the characters.

Not all of it worked for me but enough of it did that I overall enjoyed this movie, at home on DVD from my public library. I know a little French and reading English subtitles was not too much of a bother.

Good change of pace from American movies I mostly watch.

charming
Kirpianuscus11 July 2021
To define it as a comedy can be unfair. In essence, it is a smart film about lies, truth, injustice , love and a beautiful cast telling, in proper manner, a bitter- sweet story, with few good slices of absurd, unrealism, eccentricity. But, obvious, a charming film. In essence, about a boy and his dad. Or, about the option of a man after eight years in prison for save the freedom of a cop.
