Backstabbing for Beginners (2018)
Navigating an impossible maze
This film tells the story of a young diplomat who navigates an impossible maze of lies, deceit and death threats.
The diplomat is in a huge dilemma, but he navigates the situation well and ends up way more fortunate than many others in the film. The film is a little slow, and can use tighter editing. Still, it is an interesting film to watch.
Midnight Sun (2018)
A very touching plot
This film tells the story of a young woman with a rare disease, which means that she cannot be exposed to the sun.
The plot is truly touching. It is simple, but it really connects with the viewers. I greatly sympathise and empathise with the characters in the film. The scenery is stunning as well. The plot brings out many important questions, especially for the father who made so much sacrifice for the daughter.
The second half is better
This film tells the story of an aspiring DJ who plays for the first time in a major festival.
I love EDM to bits, and I have been looking forward to this film for a long time. The music is great, and the festival looks like what I imagine it to be. However, the story spends too much time meandering the back story before the festival. The characters are not that interesting either. I was quite bored in the first half, but the film did get better when the electronic music kicks in.
The 10 Year Plan (2014)
It's so romantic
This film tells the story of two best friends who makes a pact of being together if they remain single in ten years' time.
This film is so romantic! Even though the ending is quite known right from the start, the journey to the ending is a beautiful, touching and funny. I am very touched by the ending, even though I have been expecting it. I truly enjoyed the film.
How It Ends (2018)
I thought it was really good
This film tells the story of a man who drives across the United States to see his girlfriend after an apocalyptic event.
I thought it was really good! The plot is suspenseful, and it really keeps the mystery going. The main characters try really hard to survive, and I can feel their desperation and fear. I really enjoyed it.
Nong, Pee, Teerak (2018)
Doesn't know when to stop
This film tells a complicated relationship between a loser brother and a successful sister.
I hoped it would be as funny as the last film "Freelance", but unfortunately it is not. The brother is just far too annoying and unlikable for me to get into the film. The sibling rivalry is not funny either. A lot of the supposed rivalry is more silly than funny. The film doesn't know when to end as well, as it just drags on and on in the end. If it wasn't for the handsome Japanese guy and the beautiful female leads, I would have been very very disappointed by this film.
Gerald's Game (2017)
Unnerves and unsettles
This film tells the story of a woman who must break free from her shackles in order to stay alive, after her husband dies unexpectedly.
The story wastes no time and gets right into the juice very soon after it starts. I did wonder how they are going to fill the rest of the film, and it turns out there are a lot of subplots that are scary, thrilling and heartbreaking. It is an intense film that unnerves and unsettles viewers.
Irreplaceable You (2018)
A touching film
This film is about a woman with terminal caner, who tries to make her fiance's life perfect after she is gone.
It is hard to summarise my feelings for this film. On one hand, it is a beautiful story because the woman is so protective of the fiance. On the other hand, she can be viewed as overly controlling. The story is very touching at the end. It is also a great thing to see so many famous faces in it.
A film that teenagers can relate to
This film tells the story of a nice girl in school, who is bullied by the most beautiful but shallow girl in school.
It has a good story because it is actually quite sad to see how she changes in the film. It is a film that teenagers can relate to.
The Catcher Was a Spy (2018)
A captivating portrayal of a mysterious man
This film tells the story of a catcher turned spy's secret mission in Europe int eh Second World War.
The story is captivating throughout. Paul Rudd's mysterious character has a charm and has complexity which draws you to him. He is magnetic and makes you emphathise with him. I enjoyed the film a lot.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Captivating and thrilling
This film tells the story of a young woman who is forced to become a spy by his powerful uncle.
The story is thrilling and constantly gives the sense of danger and insecuroty to viewers. Dominika is constantly at peril; she does unbelievable things and yet she is still very likable. I am surprised by Jennifer Lawrence's extent of nudity in the film, as she is already a major star and has the power to say no to such a scene. Overall, I find "Red Sparrow" captivating and thrilling.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Really liked it
The first "Ant Man" wasn't very memorable, but this time "Ant Man and the Wasp" is really good. It keeps you interested the whole time with a good mix of comedy, thrill and action. The visuals are fantastic, especially the scene involving the sea and the scene in the quantum world. It is great to see so many familiar faces as well. I really enjoyed it. By the way, there are two end credit scenes, you must stay behind for them.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
A good film for a dog lover
This stop animation film tells the story of a young boy who goes to a trash island in search of his lost dog in exile.
It is interesting to watch a film with so much Japanese language and cultural elements in a film, and yet do not require subtitles for viewers to understand it. As for the plot, I find it a little uneventful. Perhaps it is because I am not quite a dog person. Overall, I think it is a good film for a dog lover.
Happy Anniversary (2018)
Such an authentic portrayal of real relationships
This film tells the story of a couple who has their doubts on their relationship on their third anniversary.
What the couple goes through is really very real. It is easy to relate to, as many people will have had similar doubts in the past. The arguments in the film are not too heated to create a negative vibe, but still very real life like. I felt very connected to the story, and I really enjoyed it.
Beautiful scenery but really boring
This film tells the story of a marine biologist and a secret agent, who meet during a holiday but are soon separated.
The first half of the film is basically just Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy on the screen against a really beautiful background. The two leads are beautiful, and the scenery is astounding. The second half takes a turn and have no relationship whatsoever with the first half. The second half just drags on. Overall, the story is really boring. It is unfortunate that the filmmakers have concentrated on beautiful visuals and cinematography, at the expense of a plot.
This animation is about a high school that falls into the sea after an earthquake. Students and staff inside the school try their best to survive.
Sweet Jesus, the animation is horrible. The colors are unrealistic, to the point that the grey people and the red people give me a headache. The colour palette is extremely varied, the brushes are broad and things are outlined. Even children's comics have better artisitic presentation of characters and backgrounds. I have no interest in the story or any of the characters, even after finishing the whole film. I suspect that you have to be very high to enjoy it.
Life of the Party (2018)
Light hearted comedyt
This film tells the story of a woman undergoing a divorce, who decides to go to college with her daughter to finish the degree she has not finished.
It is a brain off, feel good film. It features a lot of light hearted fun, and I find it enjoyable.
I Feel Pretty (2018)
A superficially happy comedy but rather sad within
This film tells the story of a woman with low self image and low self esteem, who suddenly finds confidence in herself.
It is nice to see someone finding confidence in in oneself, but the way she finds confidence is a little sad. It might appear funny on paper, but it is actually rather sad. Fortunately, she really finds real self confidence, which is a redeeming feature. Michelle Williams is quite remarkable in this. I never knew she could be so super glamourous.
A thrilling and intense adventure
This film tells the story of three people who are held captive in a mysterious high tech house. They work together to find their way out.
Wow, the story is intense. There is much suspense, thrill and threat to keep me on the edge of my seat. The set is very futuristic as well. I enjoyed it.
6 Balloons (2018)
Not sure what the message is
This film tells the story of a young woman who discovers that her brother is back on heroin.
As she drives around for a detox centre, it is clear that she really wants him to stay abstinent from heroin. However, the film takes a turn and then I just got confused. Is she becoming complicit of the crimes? Later, she changes her mind again. I got really confused.
In addition, the audio book and underwater scenes that keep on being played are really annoying. It brings the whole mood down, and truncates the continuity of the story. I must have missed some important imagery and messages. I was not sure what the message of the film is.
Fifty Shades of Black (2016)
This film tells the story of a young woman who interviews a rich businessman.
When you watch a parody, you know it is exactly what it is that you are watching. It is ridiculous, scandalous and gross, but it works. The film is so funny that I just cannot stop laughing. The sets are really stylish as well, so it is not the typical cheap parody.
I Kill Giants (2017)
Rather dull and boring
This film tells the story of a young girl whose behaviour is rather problematic both at home and at school. She is convinced that there are giants around, and she has to hunt them and kill them.
The story reminds me of "When a Stranger Calls", but unfortunately "I Kill Giants" resembles a cheaper, less riveting ripoff. There is little suspense, and is not very engaging. Most of the time we see a child with horrific behavioural problems, and it is just not fun. The story is not engaging. Though the story falls into pieces at the end, the boredom and dullness that precedes the ending just spoiled the whole thing.
The Week Of (2018)
This film tells the story of a father who goes out of his way to prepare for the wedding of his daughter.
It is supposed to be a comedy, but it is not funny at all. It is annoying, silly and simply unbelievable. It can say it is horrendous. I did not even enjoy one second of it.
Lean on Pete (2017)
I found it reather boring
This film tells the story of a teenage boy who must become an adult after a series of unfortunate events.
The pace is slow, and I don't find the characters sympathetic. I honestly don't care for any of the characters. I lost all interest in the film within twenty minutes of the film. I found it rather boring.
Coup d'Etat (2017)
A fun film
This film tells the story of a dictator hiding in an American teenage girl's suburban home.
The story is quite far fetched, and I guess that is the charm of the film. Initially I thought even Michael Caine acted poorly, but then I realise he was just in character. It is quite a fun, and hilarious film that provides brain off entertainment.
