"There will be no mob justice today. Trust in the law"
TheLittleSongbird21 July 2020
This review is coming from somebody that has seen the whole of 2019's 'Watchmen', which to me was actually very, very impressive on the whole. Not one that judged it with over the top hate after just the first episode. The alternate universe continuation concept sounded great, the advertising were strange but fascinating, there was a lot of great talent on board and being someone that loves the source material and liked very much the 2009 film in its own way, potential was big.

'Watchmen' on the whole did live up to high expectations if not quite exceeded them. Despite what was indicated in my review for the whole show, the first episode "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" was not bad at all and was interesting, doing well in its aim generally in setting things up, introducing this world and establishing the tone. It did have flaws though and is one of the weakest episodes of the nine the show comprises of, so it is easy to see in a way why it didn't connect with people. One just needs to know what to expect.

"It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" isn't perfect, though the good things (well make that brilliant things) outweigh the flaws. Although it does really well in introduction and setting up, narratively the episode is on the slight side at times and not everything felt necessary (i.e. although Jeremy Irons looks amazing for his 70s and looks a lot better than a lot of people much younger than him seeing him type-writing nude is a big "what the heck and why" moment). It's occasionally a little too deliberate pace-wise initially.

Also felt that there were a few too many ideas introduced and if actually the length was longer it would have meant more development and explanation. As a result of that not happening quite enough, "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" is not always easy to follow. Although the whole Veidt/Ozymandias subplot throughout 'Watchmen' was highly entertaining and intriguing, here in this episode it perplexes and is too much of a disconnect with the rest of the episode.

However, "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" looks fantastic. The photography is incredibly stylish and filled with dark atmosphere and already has one immersed into this very rich world. The opening scene is especially striking in this regard and one of the show's finest examples of the cinematic quality of the visual and technical work. The production design is wonderful, especially the interiors and exteriors of the castle, the lighting matches the episode's uncompromising boldness perfectly, the editing is seamless and the effects don't jar a bit. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' score is haunting and the clever (again almost cinematic quality and like a mirroring of thought processes) use of sound enhances it. There is some great use of pre-existing music, great pieces on their own and are not used awkwardly or feel too much of a mishmash. It's very diverse, it's not everyday you hear an episode for anything having hip-hop, Mozart and 'Oklahoma!' on the same soundtrack.

Writing has subtle wit and grit and is thought-provoking, the first line perfectly summing up what the episode is all about. Any references are knowing and affectionate. Even though "It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice" is only the first episode, the bold and uncompromising tone is very evident here. Especially in the shocker that's the opening. The show has been criticised for heavy-handedness, to me it makes its points with a lot of force but that's what the pull no punches content needs. It has a lot of recognisable themes already starting to be expanded upon, and the content is a long way from out of date today (in fact it's even more relevant now, which is quite painful to think about). The characters have interest value, even Veidt is oddly intriguing even if the character at this point perplexes. The acting is great, Regina King is fearless, Don Johnson has a lot of authority and Jeremy Irons (complete with a contender for the show's best entrance for any of the characters) has a ball as Veidt.

Concluding, promising start and serves its purpose in setting things up for what's to come, but there is that uncertainty too of whether to continue if worried that the rest of the show wouldn't get more eventful and answer any questions. 'Watchmen' is a slow starter but it really does get much better in my view, stick with it. 7/10

People saying this isn't Watchmen, don't know Watchmen.

Warning: Spoilers
The premise of the original Watchmen comic was always putting extraordinary people, superheroes if you will, in a world that suffered from the same problems that we as a society suffered from which most comics tended to shy away from. Where strips like Superman and the like were about escapism, good versus evil. Watchmen showed us that the world is rarely so simple. Alan Moore used the platform he was given to not only tell a great story but to make a thoughtful satire about the Cold War. I'm here to argue that this does the same for Racism, another very real issue in the world. People complaining that the show portrays white people as irredeemably evil obviously didn't see the multitude of white vigilantes and police officers that I saw. White supremacy groups do exist, this is a fact. It's not like they've invented some squid like alien to attack the earth ;) speaking of which I really liked seeing, Adrien Veidt, Mr Manhattan, the little alien squids and the ramifications of Rorschach's journal in this, I thought it was a very interesting interpretation of the world after Ozymandias' master plan. I'm gonna give the premiere to Watchmen an 8/10

Good but still has its issues.

Warning: Spoilers
Very good watch, even for those who haven't read the original comic series. Regina King and the rest of the cast give excellent performances, which are only elevated by a stellar script. It does a great job of throwing you directly into the story and the world. Watchmen has great production value, and I would expect nothing less from HBO. It is as mysterious as it is straightforward, which is fantastic. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good crime drama/thriller. My only problem having read the comic and watched the movie is the association of Rorschach to white supremacy. This really brought down my enjoyment level at times, considering how much I love Rorschach as a character. Looking at how he never strayed from the good side even in a time of great darkness and evil, this association is a disgrace to the character. Nevertheless, this still seems to be a fantastic and highly enjoyable show, and therefore I am still highly excited for the next episode.

Great pilot

This show is gonna be one hell of a ride. Don't read the negative reviews because most of them are just trolls who got hurt by the political themes.

Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars.

I will say i thought the first episode was great. It was a bit weird with the concept of officers wearing masks to cover there faces. The futuristic take with the political society. While a vigilante is trying to stop a white supremacy group.

It is dark. It is violent. And the direction has style. I love the music score. I love the connections with original watchmen like Dr. Manhatten. And others. Without giving away spoilers. There is more to the plot such as a foreshadowing for something big to come.

I cant wait to see were it goes next.

A great pilot
TheFirst0121 October 2019
Regina King was already a star, but this proved her even more. The pilot of Watchmen is a masterclass in action/storytelling, and writing. Everything from the foreshadowings to the haunting story is definitely worth a watch, and I cannot wait to see where this story goes.

A really great start to a hopefully amazing tv series
cameronjames-8695921 October 2019
As someone who doesn't know much about the watchmen comics or the watchmen in general this first episode was really interesting an honestly a great way to start a show. The story is dark, the action is brutal and dark, the cast is excellent and gives an great performance, and the concept is very intriguing what more can you ask for from a show like this. I'm for sure gonna keep watching this very promising tv show and hopefully it'll keep being great. Overall a great start to a hopefully great tv show.

WELL...Here we go!
SilverUsurper22 October 2019
The Watchmen ep 1 jumps into the contemporary political and racial issues dividing the country with two feet. It's a provocative, thoughtful, and cleverly put-together start. Regina King provides a strong, steady performance as series protagonist, Angela Abar.

Cunning performances from Jeremy Irons and Louis Gossett Jr. suggest that a big event is on the horizon.

It's dramatic and promising, I look forward to the next episode with great eagerness.

I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH THE WATCHMEN
harmisjack21 October 2019
Incredible continuation, and first start to a series based off of an established captivating franchise. Fans of the graphic novel will love this, fans of the movie will love this, and even non-comic fans will find something to enjoy!! Can't wait until next week!

I'm Your Boogie Man
southdavid24 October 2019
I love the graphic novel and I do quite like Zack Snyders film version. I am a bit fearful about diluting the brand further though, both with wider world stuff that DC have been doing in the comics, and also with this show, especially when were weren't sure whether it was sequel, remake or reimagining type that was coming. At least so far, it appears to be a sequel to the graphic novel, but stylistically quite like the Snyder film.

Set around the present day, but of an alternative history, the world lives with the fallout of Adrian Veidt's actions that, presumably, took place several decades earlier. Following organised attacks on the police, they have been allowed to conceal their identities whilst on duty, they also engage masked vigilantes to work alongside them. The uncompromising style of Rorschach, together with the policies of liberal President Robert Redford, has inspired a white supremacist action group, the 7th Kavalry, to rise up. The shooting of a cop by a member of the Kavalry draws vigilante Sister Knight (Regina King) out of domesticity and back to hunting down the perpetrator.

So the episode is perhaps best described as "intriguing", rather than particularly "good" or "enjoyable". It's definitely well made. The initial scenes, a recreation of the riots in Tulsa back in 1921 are, frankly, horrifying. Jumping to modern day and it remains a super stylish show, with impressive transitions and visual effects (all of which do seem the take their lead from Zack Snyders movie adaptation). I can't remember the last time I was as struck by the costumes on a show, as much as I was here. Sister Knights hooded outfit, the police's yellow masks, Looking Glass's reflective mask - it's all visually unique and interesting. I also really liked the music, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor provide another great score - and the song choices are interesting.

I think one of the things the pilot does wrong though is provide too many intriguing plot points or ideas, without enough explanation. I guess that the (or at least some of the) answers are coming in subsequent episodes but I'm left scrambling to try and work out what's what and I sense from the reviews that is what has thrown off a lot of people. It also seems like a lot of people were expecting a closer tie in with the key "Watchman" characters. Only Ozymandias appears on screen, played well by Jeremy Irons but again in scenes that, at the moment, are largely confusing. We see briefly the whereabouts of Doctor Manhattan on a news show but it seems that he is either going to be absent, or (perhaps more likely) held back for a season finale.

I'm not instantly in love with this show from this first episode, like I was with "The West Wing", "Game Of Thrones" or "Westworld" but I am engaged enough to come back for the next one.

Let's DO this!!
SamyM21 October 2019
Oh Man! Let's get into this story. Wow, it's weird. It's relevant. It's stunning. It's scary. It's funny. It wasn't afraid to shock us immediately! Love it! And....the up and coming previews looked amazing. I don't think they will stay on one topic. It looks like there's a LOT of science fiction "reality" in the future and I love that. Obviously I didn't read the graphic novel (sorry die-hards), but I did watch the movie and although it was artsy and well done, it didn't have the "It Factor" to grab a wide audience for a long period of time. I hope this HBO version can extend the story and make it stand alone (while it keeps its homage to the original idea). There are SO many characters that are coming and I cannot wait to meet them, follow them, and watch (what I hope will be) MANY "Good and/or Evil" transformations. So yes...I'm ready!!!! And as I stated at the beginning...Let's DO this! :-D ...tic toc

I'm not sure how to feel about this.
omershemi22 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode failed to get me hooked. It brings up a lot of questions that I'm not sure I care enough to anticipate the answer. Mainly very odd choices. Why do the KKK-esque guys love Rorschach so much as if his journal was about white supremacy or something? Why do the tiny squids fall out of the sky occasionally? To avenge their father's death in the 80's? Why is the only Russian character a dude who wears red and is called "Red"? Well, you know what? Who's to say. (Hopefully someone in the next few episodes because I'm more confused than intrigued.) For now I'll keep watching it, mainly to see what Veidt is up to. But if this wasn't from a showrunner that I like and a franchise that I like I'm not sure I would.

I'll keep watching but was not impressed
natureshowhosts21 October 2019
I have to say that if this didn't have the watchmen title on it I would have loved it but it didn't feel like it was really apart of the universe outside a couple of things. It felt like the script was already written and some exec wanted to incorporate watchmen into it and so they did some minor adjustments and then we get what was the pilot. I will keep watching cause I am curious to see how the whole thing plays out and I am a firm believer in giving a tv show a couple episodes before making up my mind so we will see.

Much better than I had expected.

I just want to say that this opens up a new path that is interesting and fresh compared to a straight up comic book reference.

Others may not agree, but this I love it when comic book adaptation successfully combines real world occurrence. 10 stars from me.

prometheus-unbound-x22 October 2019
As a fan of the comic, I didn't really like the film and thought "nice try, but Alan Moore is right: it's unfilmable". So I thought the series would be another souless cash-in. But the tone, alternate universe setting and the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross soundtrack kept me involved in the episode and I'm definitely interested in seeing where this heads. Even if Alan Moore hates it, I'm willing to give this a chance.

Not Bad ,but Nowhere near on Par with the Movie
skip-9875621 October 2019
Strange and interesting with some elements of the movie used and others hinted at..It doesnt have the quality and that immediate Grab that the movie has but it Is a 1st episode and like any new show ,it will take some time to establish itself and the strange world it portrays. Acting was good but not stellar..I would Love to see Ozmandiyas use some of his incredible powers, the speed and the strength as in the movie..Granted,he is alot older but he Is a mutated being and not an ordinary man..Also the hint of Dr Manhattan, id love it if they brought him into the show..They Could, unless there are copyrights preventing it...who knows? anyway, interesting? Yes! Blown away? No, not at all but enough intrest to invest in watching this series...Most of it coming honestly from the Name..its watchmen after all and I Loved that movie..Ill give this a chance.

I can't wait to see more of it. It's a strong start based in a scary universe. I am giving this grade not comparing it to the comics or previous movies. It's very different and isn't afraid to be a different superhero tv show.

jrzodda23 October 2019
I thought this was well written and well acted. The score is especially good. Reminded me of John Carpenter. The shots and effects were also decent. I read complaints about those who find it too political but that only bothers me when the acting and writing is subpar. That is certainly not the case here.

Great mood, acting and pacing! At least the first episode was really promising. Not too much related to the original comic but the mood is there which is the most important part.

It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice
Prismark1030 October 2019
Alan Moore never hides his distaste of film adaptations of his graphic novels. Moore is a British leftist anarchist who has no time for global capitalist corporations like Warner Brothers wanting to make money out of his work.

I enjoyed Zack Snyder's film adaptation of Watchmen who tried to stay true to the spirit of the twisted graphic novel.

This television series is set in a world after the events of Watchmen. Robert Redford is president of the USA, some aspects of the original Watchmen movie have been subverted. Rorschach masks used by racists. A bit like conservatives who have adopted the term 'woke' as an insult.

This is a violent alternative USA. Police hide their identities as they fear reprisals on their homes and families. Race wars have been a long running issue with a a white supremacist group, the Seventh Kalvary on the rise.

The episode begins with the shooting of a black cop. It ends up with a shocking finale with the ambush of the police chief (Don Johnson.) Along the way we meet Angela Abar/Sister Knight (Regina King) a former policewoman who left that life behind to open a bakery but she clearly has time to help out law enforcement.

Then there is Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) who is celebrating an anniversary dinner in a creepy mansion with his weird, maybe not quite human staff.

Showrunner Damon Lindelof has attempted to do something original based on the graphic novels. He has taken elements of real world concerns in this first episode especially race. There is enough exposition but lots of mysteries that will undoubtedly touched upon over the course of the series. This was not an opener that went off with a bang, there is some world building going on. However I want to watch more.

Very interesting pilot!
khan-saad93123 October 2019
All the negative reviews are mainly due to the racial part that is being addressed in this show. If you look beyond that, it seems to be a great show. Very captivating and interesting plot. Cinematography and background score is top notch. The only thing people didn't like was the anti-white and pro-black theme of this show

Watchmen begins right
superruser-lr21 October 2019
The pilot episode doesn't lose it's time to set the base for the principal themes that'll running probably the rest of the TV show. Themes that are already bothered some viewers for various reasons, notably for it's redundancy or the fact that it doesn't match with the source material. But Watchmen isn't over yet, still 8 episodes to go, it is enough to develop and justify the story. Hope that is justified.

Speaking of the story, there are some elements that can be a bit confusing at first sight, but he keeps you asking in how and why these things happens. Good acting, notably Regina King. The directing is good too; again, it doesn't lose it's time to start. The editing is great: cool transitions, he cuts where it needs to. The original score composed by the Raznor-Ross duo is not bad, it elevates some sequences. It balances between ambient sounds and more structured music. VFX is pretty solid.

Overall, good pilot, a bit confusing, strong potential to be a great TV show.

A solid 7/10.
