"Pipes" (#1.4)

Warning: Spoilers
"Pipes" was an overall enjoyable episode of "The Good Doctor," and I believe it is safe to say that it was a step in the right direction.

Shaun seems to be having something of a crisis when things just aren't going the way he pleases. Shaun was particularly bothered when his kitchen faucet wasn't dripping the way he wanted it to. When this reaches a point of intolerance, Shaun takes to calling Dr. Glassman for help when he can't find his lucky screwdriver. (I truly think this verifies my speculation -- Shaun truly does look to Dr. Glassman for support and Dr. Glassman truly does protect and care for him.) Dr. Glassman isn't particularly happy, considering it was in the middle of the night all Shaun was concerned about was a screwdriver. Though Dr. Glassman wasn't convinced it was a big deal, Shaun was quick to disagree.

Once again, we get to see Lea, Shaun's neighbor. I really do enjoy her character! She seems to enjoy Shaun, too, but what she doesn't enjoy is being woken up late at night. As anyone wouldn't. I think that Shaun and Lea can potentially become close.

Lea and Dr. Glassman weren't the only ones bothered by being woken up at the buttcrack of dawn. Shaun's super was also bothered. Dr. Glassman apparently once implied that Shaun's super is there to help day and night. Once he realizes this, he's quick to fault Shaun and not himself:

---

Dr. Aaron Glassman: (Shaun woke his building super up in the middle of the night) It's my fault. I should've known you would take what I said literally. Dr. Shaun Murphy: It's okay. Dr. Aaron Glassman: Actually, you know what, Shaun? It's not my fault. It's your responsibility. You're smart. You should be able to use your common sense. When somebody says something, you should figure out what they really mean. And when things don't go exactly how you expected them, navigate that.

---

I truly found this correspondence interesting, and apparently . . . so did Shaun. He thought about it for a while and really tried his hand at deciphering what people really mean. Shaun truly tries his hardest to rise to the occasion of adapting to being more independent and less dependent on others.

Once again I find myself dreading Dr. Melendez, but allow me to backtrack a second. I truly believe there is something between Shaun and Claire and I love it. It is innocent, adorable, and fun. I think they can grow to be great friends or possibly something more. Exploring the possibility would finally give Claire a broader story and will be yet another step towards Shaun becoming more independent.

Here's why I continue to dislike Dr. Melendez: In one circumstance of Claire being the only coworker to stand up for and support Shaun, he says this:

"I am curious why you always feel the need to defend him."

While I can understand Shaun defending himself and being independent is the goal, he can't do that with people like Dr. Melendez getting in his way. Just because Clair has the basic capacity to care for other people and isn't self-absorbed doesn't make her wrong. I just don't like Dr. Melendez. He makes my skin crawl.

Yet again, a flashback of Steve helps to shed light on Shaun's behavior and helps us to understand Shaun more and more.

When Shaun revealed that he doesn't mind pornography, it was absolutely hilarious, although in some way awkwardly uncomfortable.

This episode left me wondering if Claire wasn't a potential love interest for Shaun . . . maybe it was Lea?

The closing memory Shaun had made me feel for him even more. It just went to show that he has experienced manipulation all throughout his life, and it has made him struggle with trusting others. My heart sunk.

"Pipes" was a pretty good episode with some great continued character development. I give it an 8.1/10. I hope it keeps with this track. Can't wait for more!
