When Gameshows Go Horribly Wrong

Warning: Spoilers
When I read about this documentary programme advertised, I recognised a couple of the things mentioned that would be included, and I had my guesses of what else may be included, so I was really looking forward to watching. Basically the show was a three hour collection of clips, focusing on the mostly negative moments on televised gameshows, featuring word games, picture and animation games, shows offering huge prize money, dating games, sporting entertainment games, general knowledge games, big prize giveaway shows, guessing games and many more popular formats. These moments included embarrassing incidents, huge losses of cash prizes, rude words, inappropriate contestants, bad injuries for stars and contenders, bad or strange or inappropriate formats, bad or stupid answers, lack of knowledge, stupid answers, complicated and misleading games and much more, in Britain and/or around the world.

Catchphrase going wrong included: the naughty "Snake Charmer" puzzle, and new host Nick Weir breaking his leg at the start of the show. Popular gameshows going wrong included: Duncan Bickley having the first big loss of £218,000 (on the half million question) on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire; Countdown having two players give the answer "Wankers", the word "Slut" appearing on the board, and the answer "Creampies" being given; and Dutch gameshow Lingo having the players give word "Cumshot". Dating gameshows going wrong included: Take Me Out contestant Whyte Richardson, in a white suit with long white hair, getting a fast blackout from all the girls; Blind Date with undercover journalist Nicola Gill cheating and exposed as a fake dater trying to get a story, denying the man of a real date; and The Dating Game in 1978 featuring contestant Rodney Alcala, who was later discovered to be a serial killer, before and after the show. Physical gameshows included: Gladiators sees Panther almost breaking her neck in a tug of war game (Jet almost breaking her spine on the Pyramid is also mentioned); and winter sports show The Jump having so many celebrity injuries, especially in 2016. Pointless and bad taste gameshows included: Stars in Their Eyes (with replacement host Russ Abbott) doing a one-off special, with all contestants being Elvis Presley, it is pointless; quiz show 100% pays tribute to Princess Diana with all questions about her, a year after her death, with stupid and disrespectful questions; and Queen for a Day has miserable women begging for things, with tragic stories, having a "clapometer" to determine who deserves to win, dressing them like a beauty queen, and given home gadgets, it is a highly depressing and bizarre show. Terrible gameshow contestants included: The Chase with Hannah Mastrangelo getting every "Cash Builder" question wrong, but going on to win the cash prize, having contributed nothing; and Family Fortunes with Bob Johnson giving the answer "turkey" to all questions; and Family Feud hosted by Steve Harvey with a family giving stupid and repetitive answers trying to find another word for "mother". Live gameshow disasters included: contestants Gareth and Alex on The Million Pound Drop Live lose all their money on the first question not reading it properly; live late night phone-in quiz show Quizmania has a caller giving the answer Big... "cock", and a caller named May giving the answer "doctor" and then shocking the host telling him she has no legs; and Eva Nazemson vomiting live because of period pains on phone-in quiz show Nightlife. Popular gameshow fails included: The Price Is Right with highly excitable contestants, one falling down the stairs, one fainting after a big win, and one wearing boob tube exposing her breasts while running and the host didn't know it happened; and The Krypton Factor contestant Judi Stafford breaking her ankle in the physical ability assault course, but continuing and finishing the race; Deal or No Deal with contestant Corinne Davis turning down the Banker's offer of £88,000, and losing the £250,000, instead opening opening the 1p box. American gameshows that are inappropriate included: Man vs. Beast with people competing in sports against animals, it was controversial and despite a pilot made in the UK did not get broadcast; and 1950s gameshow Do You Trust Your Wife? with ventriloquist and comedian Edgar Bergen hosting, wit a couple who were married aged 14 and 15 and have seven children. The last moments featuring clips of early television gameshows going wrong included: 1950s gameshow Concentration which was too complicated to understand; and 1950s gameshow What's My Line? featuring artist Salvador Dali answering "yes" to all contestant questions in a misleading guessing game.

I had my guesses what gameshow moments would be included, the bad ones, the funny ones and the awkward ones, I always enjoy the nostalgia seeing these moments again, but it was good to learn about those I did not know, and the serious stuff as well, overall it was a most interesting and highly watchable documentary.

Narrated by Dale Winton, with contributions from Kathryn Apanowixz (Richard Whiteley's long-term partner), Millionaire contestant Duncan Bickley, Desiree Burch, Paul Chowdhry, Paul Coia, Andy Collins, Mark Curry, Union J singer Josh Cuthbert, Peter Dickson, Sean Fletcher, Rosemary Ford, Stephen Frost, David Hamilton, Anne Hegarty aka "Frosty Knickers" or "The Governess", London Hughes, Colman Hutchinson (TV producer), Henry Kelly, Olivia Lee, Zoe Lyons, Maria McErlane, Melinda Messenger, Shazia Mirza, Dermot Murnaghan, Helen O'Reilly (Panther from Gladiators), Joe Pasquale, Jenny Powell, Mike Read, Take Me Out contestant Whyte Richardson, Greg Scott, The Krypton Factor contestant Judi Stafford, Craig Stevens, Roy Walker, Shaun Wallace aka "The Dark Destroyer", Nick Weir and Diane Youdale (Jet from Gladiators). Very good!
