Ambitious but ultimately underwhelming lesbian saga

Filly Films, the all-girl division of Combat Zone video, has a history of giving female performers a chance to direct, or at the very least take director's possessive credit for a feature. "Carrie's Secret" belongs to Kayla-Jane Danger, apparently coming from the alt-porn world of fetish, and bringing a different approach to this regimented genre.

She appears in the video in a non-sex role, teaching petite ballerinas in a dance class. One drawback from the git-go is typical of overreach, the seasoned porn actresses do stretching but there is never even token dancing performed, a bait and switch that always is disappointing.

Aaliyah Love stars as a girl who gets the short end of the stick (don't mind me, my mind is wandering again, thanks to the rather listless pace of Danger's work here) among the in-fighting ballerinas. Danger is content with interesting groupings of the attractive femmes, and mixing and matching their couplings, but an absence of interesting plot or characterization detracts mightily from the whole. If her goal was to distance the action, she has succeeded.

Hand-picked cast is not merely easy on the eye but supremely talented in making something out of nothing, since at times what we watch seems more like some acting class exercise (pretend you're a tree in love) rather than conventional acting. When I'm through wading through my uncountable number of DVD features at home, I hope to give this one a second look as it is interesting enough on the surface to stand a more in-depth examination.
