Best of the season so far
alexg2411 October 2018
Just when this season was starting to lull a little, twists and turns a plenty in store in this episode. Through Joe, we witness the devastating effects torture and indoctrination can have on an individual, it becomes clear where his loyalties lie. Elsewhere, the nazi doctor and his wife scenario is finally put to bed. Plenty of loose ends tied up, and a twist at the end worthy of a season finale.

Outstanding episode, only getting better
Holt34415 December 2018
This episode marks almost everything I love about this show, the deep characters and story arcs. John Smith's outsmarting Edgar Hoover and others with a power play so well thought out I'm just glad to be able to follow him. The characters, in the Reich, the Japanese and Rebels are all interesting and well-thought-out. I like them all, the good and bad. John Smith have developed so much as a character, he's now my favorite and also the most humane, stunning acting performance, emmy worthy. So far this season, Ed and Robert's story arc have been the worst, horrible and nothing interesting about it. It might lead to something good?

The production design, everything is just perfect and real. Depressing in a way how realistic they have made it and thought out everything. The upcoming Reich story arc seems really interesting and the Rebel arc from the trailer is something I look forward to, it seems like this might be the best season yet, time will tell!

Warning: Spoilers
The midpoint of the season ends on the biggest surprise of all, Joe's death. But if you think of it, thematically it makes sense. There is a good line spoken by a character in this episode, about how it is the weak who suppress their feelings behind support for the regime. This may be what Joe does. He tells Juliana how great the regime is but he knows it is this Nazi regime that forced him to kill Heusmann. What we've seen in him is the suppression of his true feelings about it in his attempt to avoid its wrath. His punishment for this is apt. The to his story is both tragic and deserved; he could have been someone else. But with the existence of multiple timelines, I doubt we've seen the last of him. The other Joes may be very different people though.

Smith's story also comes to a head, culminating in a victory for him as he uses his position to outmaneuver those who wish to see him gone. Now Smith is head of state, things should get even more interesting. We saw his reaction to the plan to topple the Statue of Liberty. We know how he feels about the fact that the regime killed his son. Will his love for his son extend to the other innocents the regime slaughters? It will be interesting to see whether his experience has made him see the regime itself in a different light. I think it has.

Great Episode

Didn't see that coming. I'm glad I waited to watch this show so I could watch it without any extended gaps between seasons, but it was starting to slow down a little. This episode puts it right back in high gear. It's also interesting to see that even in fiction J. Edgar Hoover was a gutter crawling pestule of slime.

Juliana needs to suffer
claudiarondon-0710726 October 2019
I thought Frank was the most annoying character in the whole series. I was wrong Juliana is. She's the personification of a wolf in the body of a lamb. She needs to suffer. Real bad.

It's all downhill from here

Warning: Spoilers
I haven't found this series as gripping at all as the last few. My guess is there's a new crew onboard and they're running out of storylines. This episode especially gets a bit desperate when all of a sudden characters come out as gay who had no such inclination before. Old storylines are starting to be recycled. And now this desperate stab. Will be looking for a new series from now on. What a pity.

Plenty of boring, useless subplot
dierregi26 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It is unclear why this series is titled after the Man in the HC because that is probably the most irrelevant character in the plot. Also, the story is following too many threads, some irrelevant, others silly.

In the previous season the event shown in one of the films (the Dixon killing) actually took place and changed the future. In this series, lots of contradictory stuff happens in movies without any consequences. I know, there are countless parallel universes, but then.. who knows which one is relevant and needs to be pursued or changed?

I did not like the twist of the Juliana/Joe plot. He was an interesting character and to make him join forces with Juliana would have been more consistent. At this stage, Juliana went from having killed a man with lots of regrets, to killing without thinking twice even the man she allegedly loved. I start to dislike her a lot.

On the other hand, Smith always turns up on top, despite Helen being a serious hindrance.

The Tanaka/Japanese painter woman subplot is boring and useless, just like the Kido/night club hostess. The Japanese have love affairs, so who cares?

The male/female gay subplots are boring and the lesbian bit is useful only as far as the Hoover blackmail is concerned.

I could have done without Frank resurfacing, never liked his character.

I would like to see more of the Childan character, he's funny, cynical and interesting and so underused.
