Overly ambitious novice indie film that I couldn't hate even with its many flaws

Overly ambitious novice writer, director, producer and actor Dave Patten wore many hats in his basically first full length feature film, and although it had many flaws, I have to commend his efforts.

This is a B-grade independent film with C & B list actors. The main leads acted very well, but the mobsters were overboard and cliched. The score was decent in certain parts, but terrible in others. The editing was bad. The directing was primarily decent, but the shaky camera shots were dizzying and annoying. The writing was actually fairly decent, but still had its plot and pacing issues.

I couldn't love this film, but I couldn't hate it either in knowing its a novice low budget indie production, as I've seen much worse bigger productions.

I'm the 6th review and 4/5 (10's) are clearly fake - sad to see the producers feel the need to do that, and the other 1/10 review is undeserving. The current rating of 5.9 is about right, nothing higher and not below a 5/10. I'm giving this a 5/10 that may have been a 6/10 had I not been annoyed by the fake 10/10 reviews.

Never mix robbery and murder

In Philadelphia, O.T. (Dave Patten) and Jerome (Black Deniro) rob the son of the local mafia. They end up killing his girlfriend, as the son (Dominic Costa) recovers and is nursed at home. Philadelphia, being such a small town, O.T.'s girlfriend Denise (Emily McKinley Hill) is Dominic's personal nurse and she is also wearing the dead girl's watch.

Yes, the writing was awkward for the discovery. This leads to the mafia having revenge, and then Jerome escalating the violence. So the robber, which was initially the antagonist, becomes the protagonist because it is Philadelphia.

If you notice the outdoor scenery, it was mostly a treeless bleak season, with no snow. Other scenes are green and another scene has a foot of snow plowed along the side of the street. No care was taken to make sure seasons looked the same. As Ed Wood would say, "who will notice?"

Tony Devon doesn't say "kapish" as well as Joe Pesci.

In spite of all the shortcomings and the plot had holes, the film had character which might attract a small audience.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity. Strippers with their clothes on.

Honestly, when I could not figure out what happen with the little girl I stopped watching. The emotions and actions were just strange. Update: So I finished the movie and my question was answered. It obviously had some new actors and a limited budget but not the worse.

The movie started ok for a B grade movie and went down hill from there. Bad acting with inconsistent emotions for the situations and ridiculous outcomes for the main characters.

A movie about fools trying to fix their life after they killed the wrong person. There is no reason to like the main characters personalities and they have no real objective or any decent goals to drive the movie forwards.

Save yourself the time and go and burn a cigarette on your arm. You'll feel more pleasure.

It's hard to feel any sympathy for thugs who just robbed and murdered an innocent victim. I was rooting for the mob to kill the thugs, not the other way around. Pure trash, stay way!

Horrible movie!!!! Terrible!!! How was this movie ever released??? I bet the best actor in this movie was probably the janitor who had to clean up after all filming was done. Not sure why I watched till the end. Don't bother watching this... watch paint dry instead.

First of all any of the 10 ratings must be the mothers of the Actors.

This was dreadful. The acting, dialogue, the script, the way the actors even enter the scene is so poorly done. As soon as I saw the "nurse" which is about 10 minutes in I knew the entirety of the film and I was right - the sad part is I had to endure the worst movie of my life to satisfy my curiosity. I laughed so many times followed up seconds later by a cringe. So bad

Skip this and I promise you will thank me. If you do not you will ruin your day/night.

No sympathetic characters. Bad acting. Bad writing. Bad camera work. Implausible preposterously bad plot. And, they actually set it up for a sequel. Watched it with friends and the best thing that can be said about this film is the fun we had making fun of it.

Another movie where the director has NO idea how guns are actually used. At 13:08 left the two guys are squared off with their guns on each other. The guy with the shotgun "jacks" a round into the chamber. Just like so many other movies nowadays, directors have no idea that bad guys and cops have their guns loaded ALL THE DAMN TIME. Then the ensuing fight scenes......, the camera just shakes around to give some type of illusion of tension. Total junk. Total waste my hour-and-a-half. DON'T BOTHER.

I guess I was in the mood for a violent senseless crime movie, and this movie did not disappoint..I am surprised at so many bad reviews. This movie was NOT that bad. You really begin to like the main character and his friends as they tussle with the mob over and over again. The mobsters did not disappoint either. They were right out of the Sopranos. There was a surprise twist, a few shockers, a final shootout that was pretty darned good. The final scene left me wishing for a sequel.

I could see the South Philly Mob calling in the North Philly Mob for a few favors, and Jerome, Smoke and their other friends will have to fight bigger badder mobsters, just to stay in Philly. So I say to the dirctots, actors and writers- do it again. You know what the bumps and mistakes were. Do it again better with Backfire 2. And then Maybe Backfire 3?.Crazier things have happened!

This is in the running for the worst movie I've ever seen. Everything from the acting to the dialogue is Godawful.

I was browsing Amazon and googled the title quickly and rented it. I did not realize that writing fake movie reviews on IMDb was a thing. I hope the guys that rated this a 10 are the producers hoping to make their money back 4 bucks at a time.

Thought for the first 2 mins, this might be decent.

WRONG. Horrible acting, appears as first time actors for 99% of the cast. Very cheesy, too fake and just bad. Jean-Claude Van Dam latest movies are 10/10 compared to this disaster.

Why did NO ONE CARE WHEN KAYA GOT KILLED!?? (9 YR OLD)

I believe there were some MAJOR holes in the story. But when the mafia guys showed up to "Mom's house" and simply shot the 9 yr old girl Kaya in her face and came in to look around.. NO ONE BATTED AN EYE. Even the woman who was her caregiver (Jerome's GF) (unsure if Kaya was her little sister or daughter).. She states, unphased, that she had "stepped outside and saw a car pull up so she ran"... Then they story proceeds to never mention it again.. And Jerome's GF never so much as bats an eye about it.. UNIMAGINABLE AND INCONCEIVABLE. This COMPLETELY killed the flow of the movie for me because I could not imagine her death not having SERIOUSLY PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT on the main characters. SHE WAS NINE YEARS OLD.. Not to mention mannyy other inconceivable moments like when Jerome's GF Just happened to be waiting for the mafia's expert hitman Pancho in the dark of their hotel room and simply gets the jump on him and after a minor struggle kills him.. after he just cleared out an entire building filled with armed thugs single-handededly a the previous scene.. BUT KAYA!! POOR LITTLE SWEET AND INNOCENT SCHOOLGIRL KAYA!! WHO NO ONE GAVE AF ABOUT!!! THAT RUINED THIS MOVIE FOR ME. WHAT HAPPENED TO KAYA!!!!!!!! #justiceforkaya

Trying not to be overly harsh by saying that making a movie has to be ridiculously difficult. So much so that these top movies which are even nominated for academy awards should have the highest respect given to the effort.

And I commend anyone for trying to create a piece of art in this genre.

But, THIS........ is a piece of something alright. But it ain't art.

It's a good story, to be honest. But poorly executed. Unrealistic, bad casting, bad acting, bad execution of the storyline, bad directing, the list goes on and on.

It's to the point where I believe that Netflix would air anything. I'm about to take my iPhone out and create a masterpiece.

Backfire should be used in film school as an example of how NOT to make a movie in ALL areas.

Terrible everything. The only memorable scene when Black Deniro, his girlfriend and brother are arguing on a rooftop while hiding from mob enforcers and they not only yell at each other, but they each clap out their arguments for emphasis. Comical! I hate it when people do that crap in real life. 💩
