It kind of took me by surprise that this episode started with a story about this middle-aged Chinese couple, whose life depends on collecting empty bottles from trash cans, and somehow they manage to raise a son and help him fulfill his violin dream. I take that they are immigrants from China, since they have a thick Chinese accent but their Chinese is quite natural and fluent, but their son, on the contrary, is a different story, he speaks Chinese too, but doesn't have an accent when he speaks English, which means he was born in the U.S. They are typical Chinese parents who would give everything they have for their kids and not ask anything in return. That's just part of our culture. But of course, parents here wouldn't go through trash cans to find empty bottles to sell so they could make some cash and spend it on their kids. Life is hard and it's supposed to be that way, and it makes me feel warm inside that despite all that, they still seem to manage a happy life. That's what matters, if you cannot enjoy your life, what's the point of living? You do whatever you can to make good things out of a bad situation. When the husband took out this case containing something which we call Er Hu in Chinese and is a traditional Chinese musical instrument, it just touched me. I kind of felt proud somehow. I have never been to the States before but it's one of my biggest dreams, so I just hope, one day, I'll have the chance to live my own American dream like this couple does.
