We're back on track... with an episode about Robert Queen?
AdamDroge11 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After last week's train wreck of an episode, it was nice to see Arrow get back on track this week. Although I'm sure I'm not the only one to be surprised that, with the third to last episode of Arrow season 5, we'd get the resolution to the Robert Queen story arc.

In Adrian Chase's continued efforts to destroy Oliver, he sends Oliver a mysterious dead corpse stuck in concrete. And why? Well, because as it turns out, this is a corpse of a man that Robert Queen killed and covered up. Oliver tries to deny this as some sort of trick and lie from Adrian, but eventually has to face the reality that his father may not have been the man that Oliver thought he was.

Yeah, this is tough. Try to think of someone close to you that has passed away who you loved and respected, then try to imagine how you would react of details surfaced of something awful they had done. Pretty heart-wrenching, right?

This is what Oliver has to deal with this episode and the emotion that comes along with it is pretty strong. The scenes between him and Thea in this episode are pretty great as they talk through it between themselves in a very Oliver/Thea sort of way. Oh, and by the way, Thea is back. She walked in the room and I was reminded that I hadn't seen her in a long time. I guess it says something that I haven't really missed her too much while she's been gone, but I was happy to see her again, so make of that what you will.

The resolution of all this I think was done pretty well as it ties into a lot of themes that have recurred throughout the series. We know that Oliver and Thea's mom wasn't the best person in the world, but she loved her two kids a lot and gave her life saving them. Thea herself was then dealt a huge blow when she learned that Malcolm Merlyn was her real biological father. Then we come full circle learning that there was a lot more to Robert Queen than Oliver and Thea knew about. As Oliver said, this whole brigade began with him trying to honor his father and now he has to come to terms with the fact that his father killed a man and covered it up? Ouch.

But the final resolution is paralleled with their mother. No, their father may not have been a good person, but he sacrificed his life to save Oliver Queen back at the beginning of the show, so it shows that he loves Oliver. And as we learned in the video that Thea watched at the end, he really loves her, too, even though he is not her biological father. It was a great way to wrap up a story line that I had no idea was going to be wrapped up at this point. But I liked it.

Then we have the battle with Adrian Chase at the end, which was pretty cool. Up until Adrian Chase gave in like a rag doll when Oliver told him that his father was ready to disown him. That was just too easy. Had that been the actual way they defeated Adrian Chase, that would've been the dumbest resolution ever. But as we saw from that final shot, and given the fact that this WASN'T the finale, Adrian Chase has something up his sleeve. He wanted to get arrested and Oliver played right into his trap without even realizing it.

And, oh yeah, we had flashbacks. Real flashbacks. They mainly consisted of Anatoly and Oliver saying their farewells. Good bromance moments. Then Dolph Lundgreen comes in and knocks Oliver out. More on that later, I suppose. And more to come on why Rene decided to NOT show up at the hearing? Even though I'm not super invested in that arc, I thought Quentin and Rene had established the fact that he WAS going to show up?

Overall, I'm glad that we're back. This is not the episode that I thought we were going to get this week, but it was much better than last week's mess, and the more I think about it, the more I really enjoyed it.

Legacy

Now, that is an episode I can get behind. This was a perfect example of a show scarcely using their villain to great results. Flash has consistently failed at doing this (somehow managing to have the last 5 episodes result in no plot progression and little involvement of Savitar), but Arrow has done a much better job at involving its lead villain, Prometheus, in just the right ways.

There was a lot going on this week, a big difference from last week, as Thea returned, Rene made progress in gaining custody of his daughter (somewhat), Derek Sampson returned to the streets (as did all of the criminals prosecuted by Chase), and Ollie went back to Lian Yu for the last time in the flashbacks. But really, the important thing was that Adrian Chase was captured and locked up in a cell. As expected, I think that was just another step in his master plan.

Of course, the team didn't seem to think so, as they were seen celebrating the win of imprisoning him "for good". Little do they know that William is seemingly kidnapped by Chase and there's plenty more of Chase's overall plan to come. Tonight his main goal was accomplished by tarnishing Robert Queen's legacy and ripping apart what Ollie and Thea thought of him as a person. It's a rather inconsequential task at this stage, because you know, he's dead after all, but the elaborate way in which he came to these conclusions was haunting to say the least. Delivering a corpse to Oliver's office? Yikes.

This was one of the first steps in this show giving us closure in the events of the past 10 seasons. I hardly thought we were going to get more Robert Queen in season 5, but I'm glad we did. Did anyone really think Chase was that upset that his father "disowned" him after he learned of his insanity? Even if that was an actual surprise on Prometheus' face, if Ollie killed him he would be proving exactly what Prometheus' has been trying to prove all along, that he's a killer.

Overall, I enjoyed the tension throughout and the progression made on this season's storyline (something CW has seemed to avoid over the last few months). I can't wait for the last two weeks.

Honor Thy Fathers

Warning: Spoilers
This was a good episode, but more could have been done with an episode titled "Honor Thy Fathers" when it concerns Robert Queen and Justin Claybourne.

The episode basically fell flat for me in the opening scene, when the body in the concrete did not turn out to be that of Robert Queen. The Green Arrow was almost born the second that Robert Queen confessed his sins to Oliver, asked him to right his wrongs, then put a gun to his head to help Oliver survive. I thought this episode would finally bring public attention to that moment and reveal that Robert died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound (not from drowning --part of Oliver's cover story in the pilot episode) I really though Robert's final moments with Oliver would finally be revealed to the public. (though his friends know the truth/Star City doesn't) And, I thought the memories of this would finally snap Oliver back into the Green Arrow suit. Although it was a magical moment that Oliver finally got back into the Green Arrow suit and Team Arrow finally has a win, this just was not the masterful episode that I was hoping for/expecting.

There were great scenes between Thea and Oliver. And, then even great scenes between Oliver, Thea and Lance, but these moments were just so short and so few. Loved the mention of Roy -- really hoping that he will make an appearance at least by the end of the season! The action scenes were good. The bits of history were good concerning Robert/ Queen Consolidated. The scenes at the mayor's office have gotten so much better in recent episodes, when they involve more of Team Arrow and less politics.

8/10 good - just expected a fantastic episode based off of the description, the build up Oliver's legacy, and with it being episode 21 building up to the finale.

Arrow - S05E21 Honor Thy Father

Warning: Spoilers
There has been a common problem across the 3 CW superhero shows in recent weeks and that is the placement of episodes. We are so close to the end yet I often feel like the episodes they are giving us should of been aired 4 or 5 weeks ago. They all seem to steadily getting to the end rather than full steam ahead. This episode changed that for me. While not a lot really happened, the stuff that did had an impact of the season that pumps us up for the last two episodes.

I'm going to start with the flashbacks. It has been a few weeks since we've had proper flashbacks present and while I did miss them, I never felt that they we detrimental to the overall season. However I am really glad to have them back. I really like what they did with them this episode. While not a lot happened, it really set up the last arc that will play out in the flash backs, which pumps me up to see what happens between the last point we saw and when Oliver is found on the island. I really enjoyed the Russia story line that played through this season so it's great to see Dolph for one last time before the flash backs become something else next season.

I really loved the overall theme of fathers this episode because at the core, what both Oliver and Chase are doing is for their fathers. The way they tied it up at the end was something I really enjoyed because Chase realised that Oliver does what it does for his father. I liked how we jumped a bit further into who Robert Queen was because it builds a strong back story of where Oliver and Thea come from which is something that really interested me.

While one Thea, it was great to see her back again. As the seasons go on, her presence has become less and less in the show. I know most of that is because of behind the scenes things, but for me, Thea is a character I always like seeing around. I think this episode did a lot of Thea overall because we have seen her grow from being a school girl who lives with her rich parents, to a strong business woman who can handle big problems like facing the truth of who her parents actually were. In many ways, Thea is just as damaged as what Oliver is and I really like how they allow Thea to see that aspect to her.

As I mentioned, not a lot overall happened in this episode but it was still nice to get a few side plots playing out while the overarching arc of fathers took the lead. It's nice to get a bit of progression into Rene's story with his daughter, especially this episode because it followed the theme of fathers. Seeing Cody Rhodes back was fun. I think his is a character that will work will if they can keep around as a sort of mob boss that always seems to pop up at different points of the season.

Overall I loved this episode. I'm not sure if it is because we have come off two shows in Supergirl and Flash that are yet to hit their stride to the end, but either way, this episode for me has cemented that Arrow is back and is the leading show of the CW superhero shows for this season. We know that Chase is going to get out of ARGUS some way or another, so I'm interested to see where they are going to take the next couple of episodes. But for now I'm strapped in and ready for the ride home.

Fine form
highmarksreviews2 February 2018
After the bad "Underneath" Arrow managed to get back on track quickly with "Honor Thy Fathers", a shocking, action-packed trip back to the gloomy days. While it downplayed certain plot points and characters at times, the message was powerful and the season seems to be in fine form for the last two episodes.
