It's indeed a nice ride
Being a huge 'Scooby Doo' fan for goodness knows how long, any new show, special or film would be watched with great anticipation. While 'Scooby Doo Where Are You' is still the jewel of the crown of the franchise, it was interesting to see 'Scooby Doo' rendered in Lego.
'Lego Scooby Doo', as said with the previous episodes, was something found quite by accident after watching the short special 'Knight Time Terror' and the two Lego-rendered 'Scooby Doo' films 'Haunted Hollywood' and 'Blowout Beach Bash'. After being pleasantly surprised by 'Knight Time Terror' and 'Blowout Beach Bash' (was mixed on 'Haunted Hollywood'), it made me interested to see more Lego 'Scooby Doo', having seen other films lately following the Lego animation trend and doing it remarkably well. They are very short episodes, but is quite an interesting little series even if different than expected, being more encounters with monsters with lots of fun and spooky atmosphere rather than a mystery with an unmasking.
"Nice Ride" is a nice, entertaining 'Lego Scooby Doo' episode, if compared to some of the other episodes a little bland. There are episodes with more goofiness and creepiness, the spooky lighting, the endearingly goofy puns/dialogue and creepy monsters of "Scary Sleepover" and other 'Lego Scooby Doo' episodes are missed.
It's also, like 'Lego Scooby Doo' in general too short. It is well paced though and doesn't feel too abrupt.
One may consider Shaggy unusually savage here, but it isn't sadistically so and if somebody dissed the Mystery Machine or any other prized possession it is natural to retaliate and get the upper hand (don't encourage it myself but can understand actually why somebody would resort to it or consider it).
Shaggy and Scooby endear without having to say much and their friendship is really charming. The show-off is a character that one roots for Shaggy to retaliate against. Throughout, "Nice Ride" is entertaining and cool.
The animation again is very nicely done. It's very colourful, smooth and atmospheric, and the music is dynamic and whimsical with a nice haunted house vibe too with the main theme. Characterisation is on point as ever. The visual highlight is the destructive invention Shaggy uses against the show-off, used very imaginatively and is even cooler than the show-off's car, both of which will inspire anybody to seek instructions for making them for themselves.
Overall, a nice ride indeed. 7/10 Bethany Cox
