Great first half but dud second half
sharmakaran-6702314 September 2018
Starts well, keeps you engaged. But post intermission, it just gets super repetitive. I don't know why anurag kashyap didn't cut the movie much earlier at time of review. This easily could have been shorter by half hour.

But watchable overall.

More of a psychological romance.
jaypatel7-165-78331515 September 2018
This isn't a linear romantic movie! There are lots of ups and downs in emotions of characters and those aren't shown through words or special expressions!(especially in Abhishek's case) it's all in head.

Too much of music spoilt it a bit for me!

At the end of the movie, you'll know the story of characters from childhood, and the reasons for their decisions!! And that made it beautiful and different from regular romance.

Anurag Kashyap- a litlle hit and a little miss this time
anupkranal15 September 2018
Human emotions and actions are complex and for years Bollywood tried to show it in simple ways which Indian audience can comprehend easily. Especially this is true when we are talking about love and passion. Manmarziyan has tried to change it a little bit but how successfully the audience will decide. Anurag Kashyap has been giving off late that he now wants to make a love story, a glimpse of that we can see in Mukkabaaz . Now he comes with its first full fledged Love story at last in its latest offering Manmarziyan. In Netflix's Lust story Anurag has showcased the complex nature of a Lady when it comes to handling love affairs and relationship. In Manmarziyan, Anurag Kashyap has passed this Baton to Tapsee Pannu from Radhika Apte. Manmarziyaan has got everything from Passion, anger, disappointment in love. But the strongest point as always been in Anurag Kashyap's movie is that how well he gets out the best off from his actors. We are talking of Tapsee Pannu which is a revelation and takes the character of Rumi to next level. The energy level of Tapsee and Vicky Kausal was essential to what the film has called has Fyaar and not Pyaar. Abhishek Bachhan has done what he has good at, maintain a silent but effective personality which can be compared to Ajay Devgan's character in Hum Dil de chuke Sanam. But audience should not fall into a trap that it belongs to the genre which Hum Dil de chuke Sanam and Woh Saat din were. This one is very complex and dive deep into the Human Psyche of Love, wants and obsession. Characters Vicky Kausal portrayed a character who is obsessed with Rumi(Tapsee)and doesn't know anything else apart from loving her. While Rumi shares the same obsession, she is also a bit logical towards her approach to Love. Robbie played by Abhishek Bachhan played a silent caring guy who tries to portray himself that he is a man of morals and sacrifice for other's happiness but doesn't hesitate to manipulate people to get Rumi. Screenplay and Story Writer,Kanika Dhillon who for the first time has written a Love story (previously being RA One)is good in parts. Her screenplay slacks more than often and can be considered as the biggest reason ,why 156 minutes seemed too long for the film. She was on the money in the first half but her screenplay lost the grip in the second half only to regain in the last 30 minutes of the film. Direction It is more often than not Anurag Kashyap's movie is called director's movie but I would say that this movie belong to its actors specially Tapsee Pannu and Vicky Kausal. Anurag Kashyap does exceptionally well in the first half when he showed the electrifying chemistry between Rumi and Vicky. But he was nowhere close to his best while Love triangle started to take shape in the second half. Although very well intentioned but Anurag failed to communicate properly the conflicts going inside Rumi's mind and her decision that followed. Music It is no denial of the fact that Amit Trivedi is the most talented music director in the industry. His soundtrack is excellent and the songs are woven so beautifully in the movie that they never looked out of place and they even enhanced the effectiveness of the scenes. Daryaa and Dhayanchand are the highlights of the movie and they are used very effectively by Anurag. But the sad part is that they were not used properly during promotions and this is evident that having such good songs , none of them were chartbusters. Most of the audience will discover its great music only when they watch the movie.

What is good

Performances of lead cast The soundtrack and music The chemistry between Tapsee and Vicky Kausal The new complex treatment to Bollywood old age love triangle The authentic settings used in the movie

What is not so Good

The run time of 156 mins, the film could have easily reduced by 15 minutes or so The editing, particularly in first 30 minutes of the second half The director's lack of experience in delivering in genre of romance and love.

Surprisingly good
rehmankhilji27 January 2019
To be honest seeing a box office disaster i never watched it upon its release. Movie is somewhere 5 star to 6 but i am giving it a 7 for the brilliant acting of Abhishek Bachchan, he has everything, every damn thing of acting, too bad movie choices over the year was poor. Vicky Kaushal, you are amazing, a role brilliantly done. Last but not least Tapsee Pannu, i am completely in love. Beauty with acting skills, hard rock acting. Watched this movie, upon hearing some good words during Koffee with Karan and i was like this movie was a flop why praising it. So decided to see and then i realise what i missed. It's not every day romantic, jokes filled movie, it is a love story and with a message that if you want to love someone let the person be free, it is yours it will come to you. Love is without any restrictions and conditions and hence this movie is all about. A good watch.

Finally a realistic love story
kumartanya-2706518 September 2018
The movie is very realistic unlike the usual Bollywood love stories. It portrays the confusion the characters are going through so well. Acting is just brilliant, specially Vicky Kaushal. Songs are beautiful. People are saying that the 2nd half is boring but it's supposed to be laid back to show the connect of the two characters. It's a movie which is definitely not made for people who just want to laugh n watch unreasonable love stories and are extremely close minded. If you have good taste in movies you will love it. Much better than the so called classic love stories like dil wale. The only drawback was the excessive use of the word fyaar. Rest beautiful.

A mediocre story with good storytelling and direction
pathakm-6738230 July 2021
A boy with a commitment issue, a girl with impulsive behaviour and a guy with monk attitude falls in a love triangle. The entire film was a caricature of this facade . The best part of the movie were the characters, flawed, filled with imperfections.

Story of Dev D told from a woman perspective, masterfully crafted.
ameerabbas10 February 2019
This one is another gem from Anurag. It's one of my favourite films that came out in 2018. This film feels like reading a book. Such a delite to see detailed characterisation for even the side characters in the story. But, unfortunately this is a film ahead of its time for Indian audience.

I liked all 3 characters. Felt movie needed editing, little shorted version would have being better. Best scene is walk after divorce (last scene)

Slow saga of a confused girl
baruaritesh13 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The movie has the right intention but is extremely slow. Screenplay screeches to a halt in the second half.

Amit Trivedi's music is the only saving grace.

In a nutshell, this is a story about a confused, sex hungry Rumi, who bounces between the 2 leads in the movie.

You can give this is a miss!

Here's the best romantic movie of the year.
Azanspy20 December 2018
Manmarziyaan is engaging, loving and a soulful movie. Anurag Kashyap's debut in romantic genre proves that he's fit for it. The main three lead rocked on screen. A very good comeback for Abhishek Bachchan. Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal's chemistry is one of the main plus points in this movie. Overall, Manmarziyaan is a must watch romantic movie.

Mind Numbing
shrutinsit23 December 2018
How is it OK to make a movie stereotyping men as husband material. If the genders were reversed, it would have created havoc in the industry. Horribly stupid concept, aiding the age old "marriage material" concept than trying to break it.

Nice movie by Anurag Kashyap
asanchay16 September 2018
A pretty nice movie by Anurag Kashyap which shows the reality of today's generation how they fall in love and can't able to take a stand for one another or stand up for responsibilities. Movie start with a good page and in the middle becoms slow and intense . Good movie to watch

Not an easy watch, but that's what Kashyap wanted.
bhavinsoni16 September 2018
To start with, I loved this movie, and I was expecting a lot, a lot more after the spectacular Mukkabaaz. Also, after watching it, I'm happy the earlier cut of this movie which started Ayushman and Bhoomi was shelved by the producer. This story deserved Anurag Kashyap's Vision and Vicky Kaushal's and Taapsee Pannu's brilliance. But I'll start with negatives. Which are few. To begin with, it's repetitive. Damn repetitive. Few of the scenes felt exhausting because they kind of repeated the whole thing again to make a point. And Symbolism. I loved the idea of the twins as a sign of duality. But it started coming every now and then after a point of time.

But the positives are way more. To start with, the cast, the acting is beyond words. Vicky Kaushal is a blessing for Bollywood. Abhishek Bachchan underplays but that's what the character required. The music is on point and never hinders the narration. Both the halves indulge you into the narrative. The dialogues are beautiful.

One confusion leaves everyone confused including the audience - Disappointing
ketgup8315 September 2018
This is the first time Anurag Kashyap has forayed into an out-and-out romantic love triangle. Did he succeed in it ? Can Abhishek Bachchan make a comeback ? Let us find out ..

Manmarziyan tells the story of Rumi (played by Tapsee Pannu) , who has to choose between her careless and commitment phobic boyfriend Vicky (played by Vicky Kaushal) and the matured and sober Robbie (played by Abhishek Bachchan). Rumi loves Vicky and wants to marry him but Vicky is not ready to take the responsibility until Rumi decides to give arrange marriage a chance. Unfortunately, she still thinks of Vicky and is confused to choose between the two.

From the director of hard-hitting true stories Black Friday, dark-thrillers like No Smoking , Paanch or Ugly, crime drama Gangs Of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap has build his own empire of cinema. The brilliant director has stepped out of his comfort zone and experimented with a love triangle. The intention is pretty good but backfires with a lame story full of potholes. The movie opens with a bang. The sizzling chemistry between Vicky and Tapse, amazing soundtrack especially Dhyaanchand which was beautifully choreographed. The entry of Abhishek Bachchan adds another flavor to the ongoing premises. Till here we are good. The film starts losing focus when Rumi decides to run away with Vicky but comes back for marriage and then again tries to run, eventually getting married to Abhsihek Bachchan. This does not stop here. Even after marriage, she decides to go back to Vicky but regrets later.

I was disappointed considering am a huge fan of Anurag Kashyap's film. He is probably one of the best director we have in India who loves to experiment with new stuff. Unfortunately, he is not in a good form with Manmarziyaan. The screenplay is loose and so is the editing of the film which needs to be trimmed a lot. On the other side, the background score and music by Amit Trivedi needs special mention. There are no chartbuster songs but there are delightful to hear. Art direction and cinematography is amazing capturing the culture of Amritsar, Punjab.

It is the performances by the lead cast which is the highlight of the Manmarziyaan. Tapsee Pannu was simply mindblowing as Rumi. She makes you laugh with her frustration over her love life and at the same is expressive in emotional scenes. Vicky Kaushal will give you yet another surprise playing the role of good-for-nothing DJ. Abhshek Bachchan gets a good comeback. He has played the role with more sincerity.

Overall, Manmarziyaan is a disappointing affair which should only be remembered for its performances and superb music score. Below average 2/5

Feel good film
maulin515 September 2018
'Love stories are always epic!' This time, Anurag Kashyap is behaving like a 2.0 version director and thus he made Manmarziyaan. The love triangle is set in Amritsar with Robbie, Rumi and Vicky!

Rumi played by Taapsee and Vicky Sandhu played by Vicky Kaushal are having very serious affair. They do Fyaar like mad lovers. When the family of Rumi came to know about them, Rumi asks Vicky to come for asking her hand. Somehow it doesn't happen. Meanwhile, her family finds a boy to do arranged marriage, which is played by Abhishek (Robbie). The fight between Fyaar and Pyaar begins. But what does Rumi do in choosing her life partner is what this film is about.

The essence is similar to like we had seen in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. We can see variety in the film because of Anurag. The concept of two silent girls showcasing the inner feelings of Rumi is very well used. Anurag made this movie to earn box-office figures which his movies didn't get any. But when I went for the first show, there were just 3 people in the capacity of 400 seats. That is awful! People should be ashamed of themselves. Feeling sorry for Anurag that his commercial attempt will never be a commercial success.

Biggest plus point is the pairing of Vicky Kaushal and Taapsee Pannu. Both have done great in this year itself. Both have delivered strong performances. No one else can be as strong as them. While Abhishek Bachchan is back after two years. That is why we can see him doing good on screen. Three are fine enough to spend some bucks on them this week.

Amit Trivedi is very underrated music composer. He has given many classic songs and albums. This one is being added to the Good Album list. Film is having 14 songs. Each song is required in the film. Songs which you have to listen are Daryaa, Dhyaanchand, Grey walaa shade, F for Fyaar, Chonch ladhiyaan & Jaisi teri marzi. Lyrics by Shelle is superb. 'Satluj Mein Ek Samndar Naache!'

Kanika Dhillon has written script, story and dialogues. Fresh writing is what people are appreciating in this film. Every confused lover should watch this film to open up about his or her Manmarziyaan.

On the whole, Anurag has made a delightful and watchable movie. Somehow post interval portion is slow compare to first one. Also, we can see the influence of Imtiaz Ali in the Honeymoon trip in Kashmir. Watch out this feel-good film for strong performances and Amit-Anurag combination.

For those who have loved someone...
mjkool17 September 2018
For me a good love-story-movie is the one which makes you fall in love again, either be it with your family or with your wife or girlfriend or even an ex. Manmarziyaan did that. It emphasizes the fact that, if something like love is meant to be yours, it will BE yours, you don't need to grab or hold it tight. This is a movie for those who have loved someone with all their heart and I think people in arranged marriage will relate more to the story. It beautifully shows the process of how two people agreeing to do arranged marriage get to know each other, how they become friends first and then lovers.

Although the basis of the story can be framed as a love triangle, direction/screenplay of the story bring the novelty, kudos to Anurag and Kanika for that! The movie needs to be watched for the intensity of the emotions of main characters and for the pitch-perfect use of music. Abhishek Bachchan speaks a volume through his eyes and owns the movie. Tapsee fits the role effortlessly and Vicky Kaushal impresses with his 100% effort as usual.

deduct 3 star only for not displaying the Vicky's character well in the last
trideepgogoi-3098927 January 2019
I think in the last Vicky's character and feelings should be displayed more. At time when he wants to sacrifice his feelings for her and wants her to move on as his advised him to do so, his character was at the peek. But after that his character was not displayed much. Before the interval story was about Vicky and Rumi, but after the interval it was totally about Robbie and Rumi. Vicky character was like a cameo. His feelings was not displayed well. I personally wants to see Vicky Kaushal over Jr Bachchan's expressionless face. I was waiting to see what was his feelings, how he was dealing with this. Even Salman Khan's cameo in Kuch Kuch Hota Hain and Akshay Kumar's cameo in Dil Toh Pagal Hain has more frame than Vicky's character after the interval. I think Anurag Kashyap should do a better job in that thing. When you attached to a character then you also want to see that character in the last also.

One of the worst movie I have ever watched
pankajv-5188716 September 2018
Utterly confused movie from beginning to end. What does Anurag wants to show.. Reality or a new generation or reality of lossers, or wants to pass message for society. Though acting is good but movie falls flat without a story line and a plot which has no relavance. Complete waste of money and time. 2 starts given for acting of actress...

Great Entertainer Feel Good Film Awesome Acting Performances
ayaanbhojani2 April 2022
Gave it a watch fr the 1st time since it's release way bck in 2018,Manmarziyaan is a great entertainer to look out for indeed the storyline is well written with entertainment added to it. Tapsee paanu does an excellent job and I felt she leads the whole film on hr shoulders (Also it ws refreshing seeing her in a different role) overall she gave a vry remarkable and excellent performance. Vicky Kaushal also does a decent job and acts well. Abhishek bachchan also marks his presence with limited dialogues but overall he also acts well. The film is almost 3 hours(approx) long and i personally felt some songs would have been trimmed along with some scenes. Nevertheless Manmarziyaan is a great love triangle entertainer with vry good performances, I rate it a 7.5/10 stars.
