Exhausting, but can't stop watching

Watching the Kulina family running themselves into the ground only to stand up again and run against a wall has become something like my guilty pleasure. It's weird. I don't like the sport, I find most of the characters revolting to some degree, but at the same time I root for everyone. And I do so even though it has been well established at this point that they just can't let themselves be happy. And I'm happy when they succeed even though them getting what they want will come to haunt them in some way.

The cast and writers alike do an incredible job keeping this ongoing trainwreck just believable enough - it rarely seeems forced or out of character.

If it weren't for the gaps where we just jumped weeks or even month of the story I would be perfectly entertained. Just as an example - will I ever figure out *why* Ryan put his father in a wheelchair? There are several instances of these looming questions where I start to feel a little cheated, but I wouldn't feel that way if I wasn't invested in the whole thing to a degree that I haven't experienced while watching TV in a long time. I just can't look away.
