Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid is... interesting...
daviddevilliers5415 October 2018
Let me just get this out of the way first - this is a porno. This is a softcore lesbian porno made specifically just to arouse the viewer. It is filled with a lot of yuri fanservice. It is heavily filled with a lot of fetish-fuel. You like big breasts? This anime's got 'em. You like yuri? The anime's got it. You like yuri boob smothering? Look no further. This anime tries to get every fetish out of the way. Even bondage has got you covered. So anything with girl-on-girl you will pretty much find in this anime. The story primarily exists just to allow all these fetish fuel to happen.

Now that that's out of the way, what exactly IS the story? Well, basically our main protagonist Mamori Tokonome, a sweet and innocent yet naive young girl, arrives on an island called Mermaid after the outside world discovers she has special abilities. Upon arriving on this island, which is populated by only women, she meets another transfer named Mirei Shikishima, who tries to protect Mamori with her life. Mamori also learns that this island is filled with women with special abilities. Basically, they need to get sexually stimulated in order to use their powers. We have two different types of those - the Liberator and the Ecsta. The Liberator is the warrior and the Ecsta is the one who needs to get turned on in order to turn into a weapon. It's a weird anime. So after being attacked, Mirei saved Mamori and tries everything in her power to protect her. Will they ever get off the island? Watch to find out.

So what do I think of the story? Well, as I said, the story exists ONLY to allow those fetishes to happen. Exactly like in a porn, the plot only exists to get the actors to have sex.

What do I think of the characters? Well, considering this is an anime, there would have to be a lot of character development involved so we could actually care about them. Mamori is cute and likable enough. Mirei is a badass and also revealed to be quite a softie inside. Other characters like Mei Fon Sakura, Kasumi Shigure, Torino Kazami, Rain and Lady J are also good enough characters. The villains such as Charlotte Scherzen and Rain Hasumi are also good enough villains for the plot to exist.

What do I think of the animation and art style? Well, the animation is nice enough and the art-style is what can be expected. Since this is an anime and not a cheaply made hentai, of course it's going to have a higher budget. The action scenes are also not that bad to look at.

So finally, what is my opinion? Well, as I said, this is a porno. If you're looking to get turned on by yuri, this anime has got you covered and is perfect for you. If you're looking for an anime with a great plot, you may be disappointed. I personally don't mind the plot but even I will admit that it's really mediocre. Still, I recommend this to anyone who loves yuri.

Above Average Ecchi
Lain66617 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid is an Yuri, ecchi, action anime. It is produced by Arms. It is about a 16 Year old named Mamori, who is contaminated with a virus, being sent to an Island with simular girls like her.

The show had decent pacing. The way that the story is written allows it to have a lot of fanservice. In the first 2/3's of the show, it is episodic, but then the they ended the show with a boring plot involving Mirei, the second main character and Momaka, the main villain, which ends the show with a boring fight. Anyways the fight had all the standard clichés and was nothing special. I would prefer if it kept things simple and It was just them having fun, instead of having some villain taking over the island.

The characters in the show had well defined strengths and weaknesses. There was decent character development. Mamori Tokonome was likable and a good main character. She doesn't really change during the series. Mirei Shikishima was also very likable and was mysterious. In the end of the show, she learns that having good friends is good. The main villain in the anime is Momoka Sagara and she is the typical villain. She has a backstory with Mirei and she is quite evil. In the end she learns that being evil is bad and stops being evil. The other characters are decent and are memorable.

The animation of this show was great. It is better animated than a lot of ecchi. The character designs of the show was decent, the main characters designs were the best. The fights or battles were 50% kissing and the 50% fighting. They were animated well.

The voice acting in this show was great. I watched the Sub and the voice actors fitted their roles. The OP was really good and the ED is an annoying, catchy song.

In conclusion, I found the anime quite enjoyable.I would recommend this anime to people want an anime with a lot of ecchi scenes.

In a nutshell
Mysterygeneration16 January 2024
In a nutshell, this is a softcore lesbian erotic anime. Its primary purpose is to arouse the audience; it has no other purpose. The plot serves as little more than a pretext for fanservice-laden fight scenes, hot girl interactions, and almost hentai situations. As this anime demonstrates, "softcore" anime may more frequently afford much better production standards than true hentai anime, which is often stuck with very modest budgets. Personally, I would much prefer see a softcore show with respectable production values than "hardcore" OVAs made from scratch.

As I mentioned before, the action scenes' "Soul Eater, but with orgasms" idea and the tale of a group of girls being stuck on an island are all really just excuses for boobs and yuri, and the characters are mostly there to satisfy particular fetishes. Both the "plot" and the portrayal perform admirably in that aspect.

The explicit scenes tend to look fairly decent, and the character designs are undoubtedly the nicest and most appealing of all the Valkyrie Drive projects. The visuals are pretty nice, however occasionally there is a noticeable lack of polish. Despite not being especially distinctive, they manage to be quite elegant and appealing and have their own distinct appearance and feel, all without the usual VN-esque cheapness frequently found in such anime. The series succeeds in having many truly sensual situations, and the animation is done pretty nicely when it matters.

There's nothing wrong with the sound design; the music and the VA cast both perform admirably, and the required groans are used to good use.

I loved this series in the most ridiculous manner possible because I love well-executed filthy yuri, and considering its goals, that was really all I needed.

Wtf????
j-m-w23 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Hm Lets think of a porn-plot for Anime... Hm First there have to be only woman, OK and then, yeah, when they get sexual pleasure they, Hm, Yeah! - They transform!!! Hm, transform into what... Yes! - Weapons! Wtf?

So that's basically what this is about. There are Woman captured on an island, and they got some sort of virus, why the one half of them transform into weapons when they present their tits and the tits get squeezed. And the other half can control this weapons. And then they fight. For totally stupid reasons.

Thats really all the show is about, there is no real story going on, basically all you see this series are how woman squeeze other woman's tits, how the woman groan and then transform into weapons.

So the only thing, which differentiates this show form an usual Hentai-porn is that the genitalia are not shown. Though Japan censors all genitalia even in Hentai-porn, so id say there actually is absolutely no difference between them.

So if you want to jerk of, OK watch this, else... Don't!

Jaw Dropping Fanservice
adammheeley2 October 2019
This is a fanservice anime of the highest order. If you are not looking for that then move along. But if you are then it has everything you ever wanted in an fanservice anime.

I don't understand why the rating is so low. It is created for a certain group of people who must not understand that this is a genre. It is not an anime with fanservice thrown in. It is dedicated to flaunting it for appeal. So if that's your thing, like it is for me, then you will love it. I mean lesbians that turn into fighting gear, what's not to love?

A lesbian anime that would have full potential to be better if it wasnt for the writers!!!!!!!!!!!
Irishchatter18 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Now I got around to this because I thought the poster was a little romantic and thought I might check this out. I never intended this to be an adult film until I actually watched it and realised that the "cute" girls only turn into swords when they are sexually aroused by their "masters". I seriously thought, that really is a pathetic and lazy way to make a storyline out of an anime series. Its like making cute innocent girls into toys but in the more "epic" way. Its just so effing dumb as hell! If they think they are going to make a unique lesbian anime series that stands out - make the storyline more creative that no anime writer has ever done before, concentrate less on the boobs no matter what size they are and less hardcore sex scenes. I feel disappointed that this anime series didn't reach its full potential and like it really doesn't deserve a 7 IMDB rating in my opinon. It has to be less for me I'm afraid. Ill have to give it 4/10....

Amazing Visuals
adammheeley21 August 2020
The environments along with the characters are all drawn so well. Every scene is like a work of art. The two main characters are easily my favorite in any fan service anime.

If I explained the story to you it wouldnt make sense, but somehow they make it really engaging by having fun with it. The voice acting is also top notch.

These guys need to do more stuff. They did a great job with this one. Ignore the haters.

Well, well.
bhernandez221626 June 2019
I watched this show for the first time, and I was like, wow. I did not expect some lesbian women on the show. But you know what, I was like, I'm very straight with women, and I do love women, so I just decided to watch "Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid" and it was alright. Cause I'm like Chris Tucker, when he loves Mushu... and I love mushu :)

Internment camp drama dressed as soft porn anime
rtayaben11 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you know X-men and Transformers, you can accept this series' unusual concept of a virus designed to bestow superhuman abilities. Mermaid Island's inhabitants are all victims of a gov't weapons project gone wrong, "transfers" from a society that deems all who are infected as potentially too dangerous, despite those who already use their powers for good. Obviously, the reviewer who described the pairs of girls trying to optimize their gifts as "masters-slaves" never made it past the 5th minute. The vast majority of relationships are consensual, even the submissives are willing to make their unions work. In fact, the ones able to wield the Extars (living weapons) are called Liberators.

No getting around the T&A during transformations, which thankfully are short and non-repetitive unlike Sailor Moon's, and there's the obligatory beach and Japanese bath episodes. And tentacles once. But if you've seen the Star Trek Next Generation XXX Parody, minus the sex scenes that was decent canon-caliber stuff. Same here; a flowing script and fast pace allows you to get behind the rather good and complex story. A lone idealistic self-appointed governor is trying to impose order among the growing population but has to deal with the island's secrets; power-hungry groups and other rebels with their own agendas; and finally, the arrival of the main heroines, strangers from opposite backgrounds who had to immediately *bond together* to survive. Of course, you sense the governor's well-intentioned efforts to convince "the watchers" they will eventually be fit to rejoin the normal world, as well as other plans to escape the island, are doomed to fail. Soon the activities alert the government, who bring in tech-enhanced beings to tie up loose ends in the experimental prison.

Yes, most of the mains are listed as teenagers and act/speak accordingly, and the villains aren't well-developed. So if you have to skip something, make it the Giantess episode, which doesn't advance the plot. Otherwise, enjoy Season 1. The governor and commander are likable, the Robin-Hood type provides comedic relief, and the action even from secondary characters are delivered top-notch. Most importantly, the protagonists' chemistry is instant and hot! But sex and exaggerated body parts or no, score is still 8/10. Final spoilers: not every girl is lesbian and as the heroes meet more girls, not all partnerships are set in stone.
