pretty good...but kinda generic
joelherro25 December 2015
Don't get me wrong, I liked this anime, but it's nothing original. If you have watched many animes, then this will feel like 'been there, done that' kinda stuff. If you're new to anime, then you may really enjoy this one...

Ikki Kurogane is 'the worst' magical knight ranked F in a school of magical knights. All his peers have better magical abilities than he does and even his father has always treated him with contempt due to his lack of magical aptitude and he only got into his school by having some strings pulled for him. There he meets Stella Vermilion, a foreign princess ranked A at their school. He ends up dueling her and wins and people begin to realise his F ranking is not necessarily justified...

The story is interesting enough, the characters likable and the animation is great. However, it just seems generic to me but maybe that's because it's probably aimed at a mid-teen audience and I prefer more adult anime. Anyway, worth a watch if you're into magical anime.

Externally Generic, Internally Different
JordanCStewart16 October 2018
If you're an avid anime fan, this anime is your standard "rags-to-riches" storyline which follows Ikki Kurogane, who's ranked F in the academy, progress through the ranks to determine to people that being ranked based on your magical aptitude is not accurate to a person's ability. He meets Stella Vermilion, a princess from another country who's ranked A, who ends up becoming rivals with him and challenges him to a duel after Ikki saw her mostly naked in HIS bedroom. The two end up duelling each other and Ikki wins, with Stella slowly beginning to fall for him as he doesn't see her for her status as a princess, but as herself. From hereon, Ikki slowly rises up to the top with Stella by his side.

As you watch on however, the minute details begin to separate the show from it's other Typical counterparts (Asterisks War, Infinite Stratos, etc.). There are a few girls who get introduced, enough for the show to fall into the "harem-trap" that most shows go for. However, the one thing the writers' nail is Character Development. The side girls aren't love interests, they don't want to fall in love with Ikki, they either become his friendly rivals, his student's or best friends. It's refreshing and interesting. Including the development between Ikki and Stella, it's wonderful to see them grow with each other!

The animation, considering the small studio and budget, is pretty damn good! Best thing about it, it's also used as a storytelling piece. Soundtrack is okay, not much to talk about there (nothing that caught my attention, aside from the opening theme). Overall, it was an enjoyable watch. Not exactly world-class, but it's generic storytelling told in a refreshed way! So whether your a long-time anime fan, or your starting out, Chivalry of a Failed Knight is an alright watch to see. I'd definitely recommend it.

Better than your average high school battle anime
phanthinga26 February 2019
Just when I though I had moved on with the trashy high school battle anime phase of mine until Chivalry of a Failed Knight an anime series from 2015 pull me back in when I found myself enjoyed this anime way more than I expected. Usually with this kind of fast-food anime the story played out like this: A bland and dense as hell MC that no one care about at first step by step win everybody heart and got himself a group of love interest but this anime on the other hand about 5 episodes in the MC Ikki already got in a love relationship with the first girl he bump into Stella and the rest of the series is about those two overcome the hardship from society and that one of the best thing that ever happen to this anime. Ikki the MC is a cliché character but it very hard not to root for him because he always got the short end of the stick in his entire dreadful life and because all the bad stuff people give him so fricking disgusting that the moment he fight back it put a big smile with maximum satisfaction on my face. Too bad that it never got a second season because I would love to see more of Ikki and Stella love progress more in the future

Good anime with a refreshing storyline and interesting characters
ajrcvr2 June 2016
Yes, it is true there is nothing new under the sun - after all, we've kept reading and watching Shakespeare for over 400 years and haven't gotten bored with that yet - but what is interesting about a story is the way they develop it, particularly with plot and drama. The concept of a failed knight who is trying to work his way up is not novel (rags to riches and so forth), but they do it well enough here to be interesting. Stella and Ikki are neat characters and the plot line centers around them and how they develop their lives, their education, and their relationship, problems we all have at one point or another. Add a little magic and the occasional fight for your life, and you have an interesting story. It's humorous at many points, dramatic at others, and altogether an enjoyable feature to watch.

I was trying to do an elaborate text to express my gratitude towards this awesome anime, however i have no words to describe the awesomenss of it.It was able to get me in 1st episode and i wasn't able to stoop watching it.I had a great night as i did marathon of it. Gotta tell you guys i've seen most of the animes out there and most of them are similar however this one can distinguish from them as the main caracther's Ikko Kurogane and Stella Vermillion go trought an awesome love and at the same time you get caught in it.

If you guys enjoy Magical World's where competition and romantic is present then this would be the perfect anime for you to watch.

Surprisingly enjoyable anime with some fresh twists.
dameon_green14 May 2020
CoaGK falls in the action, fantasy and romantic comedy categories and does a pretty job with each.

Pros:
  • Typical tropes have some quality "twists".
  • Underdog / non-OP protagonist.
  • Good balance of action and story.
  • Excellent balance of humor and heart.
  • "Bad guys" are a little more flushed out than in other series, and same is true if the "Hero's".
  • Consistent Animation.
  • Good English Dubbing.

Cons:
  • Some heavy fan service.
  • A few story points are predicable.
  • Occasion heavy cheese factor.

All in all it really deserves a second season.

Very good anime and needs more season
adrianlance20 September 2018
This anime has a lot in common with others but so does every movie you watch you can just about predict what's gonna happen in every scene especially horror movies but every episode in this show keys you in more and more and with this show being such a low budget yet a great anime could mean huge results in maybe upcoming season

Dunno, at the begining i thought this is going to be a good series cool fights, i liked the knight system itself, interesting story but the last 2 episodes become so stupid, the plot is so stupid without any reasoning and he just lets them do it, then they offer him a deal which makes no sense at all and he just takes it xD until then i was hoping for a second season but i actually can see why this isnt going to be continued, same issue like the 7 deadly sins, cool anime itself but so much stuff going down that makes no sense at all ruined this anime for me, i still give it a seven

Very good, fun, and highly intriguing!
NickCosio25 September 2023
Chivalry of a Failed Knight for me was a pleasant surprise. This is one that I hopes gets a season 2, as I think there is a lot to work with. The main characters all have interesting things going on and great chemistry with each other. This makes for almost every scene being fun and attention grabbing. It's also a nice change of pace to have a main protagonist who is more down to Earth in an anime like this, and it makes him a lot easier to connect to and root for. The plot is well done and well paced, but unfortunately ends on a cliffhanger, at no fault of this season. The universe and world building is also great and leaves me wanting more. Overall I would highly recommend Chivalry of a Failed Knight to anime fans!

This may be the most amazing anime ever.
LopousIMDb1 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen Rakudai like 3 times and I cried at the ending so many times, but let's start from the very beginning before going to the end.

I showed my friend this first to see what he thinks and he didn't like the first episode, because the first episode is supposed to kind of introduce you towards the series and I can see what he means.

The first episode so was there a massive fan service, but it's like a dangerous type of fan service, but it was that type of cliché where the female trips over the male, but this time, so did we see the body of the male instead of some "panty shot". She saw the body and saw, also felt a body of a warrior who didn't give up, with a lot of spirit in him and I really loved that little detail.

Further in the story we saw a type of cliché that the little sister loves her's brother, even makes up with him and such. But the reason of it was really touching, I really loved it and I was feeling the main character in the bottom of my heart and soul.

Ikki Kurogane was one of the manliest character I've seen (well, until I saw JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusade) his manliness was just great- no more than great, like... Greater! Later in sooner episodes, Stella and Ikki was alone in a house for themselves and Stella was really sick, how Stella wanted Ikki and her to have it (aka sex), I was thrilled, I thought it would turn into hentai, but no it didn't Ikki's response was something I didn't quite see coming, it's a response I didn't quite expect and it was super manly of him and that was one of my favourite moments until the last episode! The last episode was the battle everyone wanted and waited for Miss Lighting VS Mr. F and nothing! He proved himself that he can't show any chances and went to the limit- No, more than the limit! He went beyond what he could manage and escaped his father. He then followed the epic win with a proposal and I was amazingly touched by that, like I cried right there in that ending and it was one of the best ending I've seen in a season 1 of anime.

Even this gets season 2 or not, I loved how it ended and I'm happy about that ending.

Besides one creepy aspect it's a solid show. And one of the few animes where the guy actually admits to liking the girl go figure.

A Great Anime!
exang22 December 2016
This anime is incredibly good, the main characters has a strong development and their the main characters you don't want to miss. This anime blows my mind and has reach deep inside of my heart, as a long time ago Ikki Kurogane is the main character has shown me a true gentlemen and man he is and you treat a women right, and feeling strong empathy of the main character. The action is very exciting and the sound effects is well done.

In a long time I have quit anime, once I've watch this anime i got interest of watching this anime.

This anime is my hero. Thank You for making this anime. Highly recommend this anime and hoping for a second season in the future.

Different in many good ways.
remi_8859 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As you may wonder why a nine. even though this show is quite predictable. it has so much to offer that many TV shows and anime are horrified to show the public. If you actually watch this show trough it's episodes you will maybe know that it goes quite deep in the information that it gives about the abilities and feelings that people have for each other or in general. Also this show actually dares to defy the status quot so that is one reason why i give it a nine. because it goes beyond petty lust but actually makes this real and not so Platonic as in many shows now a days. yes it has all the same stuff that any anime has but not many shows go quite as deep. the ending of this show actually brought up feelings in me and not many shows can do that. so thank you creators. you didn't make a show that is the same as the rest because it makes money, you actually made a show that tells more than the mundane.

Hope this review will make you watch this show, because it will be vert entertaining and maybe even teach one or two things. like effective communication and so on. just look at the show and enjoy it.

worse than Twilight
erminahotmail10 December 2023
Then the anime series Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry is a story about a boy named Ikki Kurogane who wants to be a more powerful student at the same time he meets Stella Vermillion and from here big problems begin Then this anime ball from the love story from these twoBut this love story doesn't really make sense or the moments that they are together don't really go well for example Ikki how can he fall in love with this person he knew all the time only treated badly it's Stella how can you fall in love If all the time he only considered maniac above alltheir first meeting this love story doesn't really make sense it's even worse than that of Twilight And let's not talk about the other characters because they have no meaning in the anime it's only centered on these two This is a really bad love story yes they are high souls who have amuch more convincing love story than this to conclude vote 2.

This anime has a great mix of romance, action, adventur. The MC is asthetic and overpowered too. This anime should definitely be on your watchlist.

Enjoyable Romance
300Megahertz24 August 2020
The relationship between Ikki and Stella is surprisingly well portrayed. The show plays with some cliches like sister love, jealousy and thick-guy-who-doesn't-get-it, but it never does so ad nauseam. I am also surprised by how natural characters react in comparison to many other animes. I found that refreshing.

The show has several subplots, which are interesting, but they also have terrible character obsolescence, meaning the characters of those subplots will never be mentioned again. There is some vague grander plot going on, but it's weak and it doesn't really get resolved.

The fight scenes are visually impressive and well choreographed.

Apart from Ikki, we don't learn much about the other characters. The biggest weakness of the show is its short length. There is also some tedious monologuing going on.

Not a bad anime!
Irishchatter3 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Some people have compared this anime to Shakespeare but I highly doubt it is. Its really all about the knighthood although its not about serving the queen or king, its more based on the gang defending for themselves. The romance wasn't bad either, I thought that Ikki and Princess Stella were a great match really. I even liked how Ikki was indestructible in the last battle and yes seeing him get injured with a lotta blood is really not nice to see. However, it does prove that he is a bad ass fighter regardless if he is considered weak because boy god, he is not the type to be a weakling lol!

The comedy, romance and storyline was good, not my favourite but its in one the good lists for me! I give this a 8/10!

Please make a season 2
roggothybrown28 July 2021
Honestly, this TV show was pretty good. The fight scenes were pretty cool, the characters and their backstory were interesting, overall a pretty good anime. But the worst part about is that there isn't a season 2. And I don't think there ever will be one, because the ending leaves you on a cliffhanger. Like every TV show hinting at season 2.

Amazing Anime!
johnjohn-1222912 November 2020
This is a very good Anime, it is very well balanced being filled with plenty of action, romance, and deep hearted morals. I enjoyed the storyline, voice acting (dub), and the animation. You are thrown right into the action from episode 1 and it automatically engages you very quickly into the storyline. Honestly I have watched alot of anime, but there is nothing quite like this one. I definitely would recommend the watch, It is worth every single minute. My hat is tipped to the creators of this anime and I really hope there will be a season 2.
