First of all, yeah, all my predictions were wrong, and I did kinda think I had it down pat, so, okay...
As the biggest Johnny-come-lately on IMDb (with all the contemporary fairly recent TV shows) I have had to do my quote submissions for the episodes in such a way as to avoid spoilers, so I was often just on the very brink of spotting some forbidden bit of info. As for this episode, I learned that it was much loathed years ago already. Starting out on it a few days ago, I took it on as Episode 20 and 21. And this is how I will refer to it. Episode 21 has the big reveal. A.D. turns out to be Spencer's evil twin, which is like a bolt from the blue. I can very well understand why most fans find it completely unacceptable. Me myself I am SUCH a Troian fan, I just sit there amazed at what a great actress she is, the completely different look, the British accent...
Okay, people, don't tell me you expected a miracle. It would have taken, well, Divine Retribution as A or A.D. or whatever to explain the logistics of all that heavy lifting, from bodies in church towers to an extremely bulky "pin-ball machine" that disappeared and reappeared beyond what I. Marlene King could ever get away with.
And as for rubber masks of faces, they are only faces. Mona couldn't wear a Melissa mask and be Melissa, their body types are completely different. Looking like the person in this superficial way would not give you the voice of that person. How would you know what that person was going to wear that day in order to duplicate the style? I can name a hundred things that would make every episode most most most unlikely to carry off in real life. Superhuman strength and agility certainly would be a prerequisite. Nothing human.
Okay, but enough of this. Screw these realities. Did I watch for the convincing story line? Nah. I was an Ashley Benson fan from the outset, did notice Troian Bellisario, but Spencer wore such dorky clothes, especially the shoes... of course, The Raven looks at faces, and hair, Those Eyes, and Spencer is really really darling. With those long limbs pretty soon she took the lead. The five year jump, and she came back with that soft hairstyle A recent review of mine mentioned the word "huggable"... oh, oh, oh...
You get the picture. The story didn't really matter.
In all fairness, the people blasting this episode do so as a gut reaction to feeling cheated. But they had unrealistic expectations. From a show that utilizes hoodies all year round, through blazing summers? Objectively seen this is a great episode with a wonderful performance by Troian. Notice how most of the rest of the main cast were reduced to bit players in the background?
It had to be done this way. There was no other way. If Alex Drake had been introduced in the pilot, well, we'd all have known.
It's not the destination, but the journey, the ride. The crazy Hanna quotes I had the honor to post on IMDb, some of them Internet classics but not on IMDb itself...
I considered myself both a fan and an outspoken critic of the show, like in "with friends like me the show doesn't need enemies"... but you know what? Along with the DVD extras, the cast saying tearful goodbyes, damn, people, you know the rest, The Raven sat there sobbing...
