Happiness or misery, come from within. I feel she was depressed until the neighbor told her about No One. Then she chose to change, not to be happy per se, but to give herself the freedom to be happy, she opened herself to the possibility that what he said may be true, and in so doing, she experienced ecstasy/bliss.
