If there were any justice in this world, Wishbone Ash would have been bigger than the Rolling Stones, and that is not intended in anyway to deprecate Messrs Jagger and Richards. This concert recorded at the Marquee in February 1983 showcases the talents of Laurie Wisefield, who plays the bulk of the lead, although Andy Powell is no slouch either, sharing it (and vocals) particularly on the epic "Phoenix".
The line up here includes Trevor Bolder (now deceased) on bass and Steve Upton on drums. Powell and Upton are founder members; Wisefield replaced Ted Turner when he quit the band for the first time, but he is as good as a founder member, and here he is simply splendiferous on "Living Proof" and "Open Road" in particular.
The 1970s and 80s were really classic times for melodic rock; three hundred years from now these guys will be regarded with the same awe as Beethoven today. Or they would be if there were any justice in this world. And of course if Man still exists, which is probably not quite an even money bet.
