While Constance and Barth have breakfast, Rebecca Justin, a young woman from Montreal with a baby, shows up in a taxi asking for Antoine. In a new case, Eric Brunet reports that his wife, Sylvie, and his daughter, Paloma, are missing, the family car, abandoned as if they had fled or had been kidnapped. Boris and Constance discover that the Brunets have been foster parents for 15 years and took Paloma in when she was born, because the biological parents, Jennifer Marland and Mickaël Rocca, were drug addicts and the baby was sent to foster care. Jennifer and Mickaël had recently met the Brunets and requested to recover the now 5-year-old girl.

In the maternity emergency room of Hospital La Timone, a woman is taken to the delivery room, while nurses wonder where Professor Lalande is. He arrives at the hospital in his car to start his shift through the ER, but falls to the floor, dead of a subdural hematoma. Investigation shows that he received a blow to the temporal bone at least one to 36 hours before arriving at the hospital. Philippe Lalande, 58, married with a daughter, combined his work as Head of the hospital's gynecology service with medical care at a women's association. Jelena Markusic worked in his team as a midwife and tells the judges they had a difficult birth with a young woman, whom the teacher saved but is in a coma; her husband threatened Lalande.

With Antoine, Rebecca and her grandson, the house is a mess. Constance can't find her summons for the hearing where a council will judge her for the Brunet case. At the Palais, a new case: the Reddon family (Paul, 42, supermarket manager; Jeanne, 36, housewife and Timotée, 17), missing from home for four days: Front door forced open, blood all over the place and "Tu vas payer" painted on the window. A new captain, Nadia Saidi, from Annecy, joins the team.

Lucie Manneur, 18, brilliant student, is found dead in the courtyard of Saint Croix Boarding School in her pajamas with no obvious signs of sexual activity. She got out of the school with her friend and roommate Victoire Ledoyen to go to a bar, which they used to do every night. The girl had invented that her father lived in South Africa and her mother was a stewardess. Meyer and Delcourt discover that she spent all weekends with the Ledoyens.

There is a demonstration at the gates of the Palais de Justice against the release, due to a procedural error, of Sylvain Perray, accused of abusing Lydie Moureau, 8. The next morning Delcourt and Meyer must investigate an attack on Perray which has sent him to hospital with concussion. Main suspect is Luc Moreau, the girl's father, but the proceedings instituted by Judge Bercot reveal that another girl may have also been abused by Perrain: Lu Carbain.

Marc Mauville, a poor peasant, appears suffocated in his barn after being beaten. In preliminary inquiries, the judges discover that Mauville was in possession of some gold coins, apparently coming from a treasure found on his property, of which he had not even told his wife Dominique.
