A Decent Feature Debut that Never Really Delivers
TwistedContent6 March 2020
The synopsis of "Impossible Monsters" is very intriguing - an ambitious professor becomes caught up in the murder of a participant in his sleep study, as the lines between dreams and reality blur. The movie has a pretty cool poster and just the right media quote on it. I'm telling You all this because those were the details that sold me and brought me to the big disappointment. If not exactly disappointing, then very underwhelming.

"Impossible Monsters" is, by all means, an adequate film, a decent directional debut effort. Director and writer Nathan Catucci promises a whole lot, mystery, twists and a warped reality, but the hyped up delivery never really comes through. The first half feels a little soapy - the intriguing themes of sleep paralysis and such get saved for later as we watch the characters dealing with their relationships and Nathan Catucci trying to web that all up into something mysterious. The second half delivers a bit more - more atmosphere, more questions and twists. Though the kind of twists that you smell long before you see them. The entirety of the characters, including the performances they're carried on, never really impresses or truly engages. Aesthetically, "Impossible Monsters" looks and sounds good, less stylish and ambitious than I was led to believe, but definitely above average on the technical side. A heartfelt compliment goes out to the original score, the one element that, in my opinion, helped setting mood the most. While my eyes could appreciate seeing the "Impossible Monsters", my brain got more numb than engaged, for the story leads nowhere unexpected, nor anywhere absurd or beautiful. The 84 minutes felt longer than they had any right to do.

There's an undeniable effort put into "Impossible Monsters", but the underwhelming feeling of never getting anything with 'weight' is what it leaves, so for me this movie landed right into the "painfully average" category. My rating: 5/10.

Nothing to do with sleep paralysis
ivington26 March 2020
Very tenuous link to sleep paralysis, which has little to do with the plot of the movie and, at the end, I was left wondering what that had to do, if anything, with the film as a whole. It seems it was put in there just to add an extra layer of suspense in order to spice up what is in essence a rather dull movie. As for the ending. I couldn't even fathom a guess of what that was supposed to mean.

What is the point of this movie?

Warning: Spoilers
When the first 53 minutes could be eliminated from the 84 minute runtime and the viewer would be no worse off and lacking no pertinent information about the film...that is a serious issue. If you want to participate in MY unfunded study, please try it. First: Watch the movie from say, 53 minute mark and then Second: watch it from the beginning. The first 2 "acts" have nothing needed for the last "act". And there is no blurring of lines between dreams and reality or What not. Very disappointing.

0 Research and 0 content
ham-ma24216 March 2020
It's like when a teacher gives you a homework assignment and you play with words on your paper to make it look long but it has 0 content in it, because you never did any research and wrote just the most basic ideas ever.

The acting was bleh, soundtrack was pretty nice and did create a tiny bit of atmosphere (because the characters couldn't). I'd suggest not to watch it (I did watch all of it), also it has a very open ending.

If you are into psychology, lucid dreams, dreams or sleep paralysis, you won't learn anything most likely, except that this movie will show you how much you actually know on those subjects and you will feel superior. Also watching this movie I thought it will get in depth and all I left was with wanting more, because it never got deep, just gave off some illusion of hope.

P.S Also this movie is very predictable and doesn't even hide it, just to end it with "oh so who did it?" and it's never answered. And rossalex231, I believed in your review, you're a scam.

I couldn't get to the end
FilmChamp2015 March 2020
This is some bad acting, story flow, transitioning of scenes, and music from a movie that I've seen in a long time. This felt like it should have been a free movie to watch because it was an armature movie from film students. It got too painful to watch because of how nothing flowed together, rather it just happened with obnoxious "mysterious" or "suspenseful" music. I almost felt the acting was from the notorious The Room movie.

Save your time and money. Unless you are looking to watch something with a friend and laugh. Especially stay away if you're studying psychology for a profession or are currently in the field.

Cliche ideas about sleep paralysis/dreams.
leeleesaur9 March 2020
The acting was some of the worst I've seen in years. The two cops in this literally made me bust cry with laughter. It's almost as if someone went on Google, did some sketchy research on dreams and made a movie. You could tell in the trailer the acting might be bad, but the graphic scenes they show in the trailer are much more underwhelming inside the actually movie.

Unwatchable Drivel
omendata3 April 2020
Not much to be said this is just a poor piece of utter drivel with a title designed to lure you in thinking it may be a horror or thriller with bite which it is neither of!

I would rather slit my wrists with a rusty breadknife than have ever watched this but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Dont waste your time folks this one is a big steaming pile of tvrd!

Great effort
monmonvision20 March 2020
You can tell the crew and the actors went all out for this film. The story is great though I feel the first part bored me a little but luckily things really picked up at a fast pace. Regardless, kudos to Nathan Catucci - this film is a success and I'm looking forward to more from him.

Entertaining
cynvanity24 April 2024
This film is a mind-bending journey! With a plot rooted in psychological twists and dream-like sequences, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Featuring well-known actors, it's clear the production had a significant budget, complemented by an excellent soundtrack. This film stands out as unique and might not cater to all tastes. The depiction of the characters' inner worlds is masterfully executed with a blend of music, cinematography, and editing.

The original artwork for the character Otis is phenomenal. It's so distinctive that it deserves its own exhibition in the future.

The cast delivers a fantastic and intricate performance, making complex choices that add depth to their roles. It was particularly refreshing to see Santino Fontana tackle a markedly different character.

Rather than being an overtly intense experience, the film offers a deep introspective look with a consistent, engaging mood. For those fascinated by dreams and the subconscious, this movie is definitely worth watching.

Has it's moments
musictapper19 March 2020
This movie was a trip! A trippy psychology, dream type of plot that will have you at the edge of your seat. There were some familiar actors in this so it was made with a budget and the soundtrack was top notch also. This is an unique film and not for everyone.

No doubt a waste of time
FlorinAndrei199027 May 2020
I gave 2 stars for the music inspired from "Hannibal", the TV series but that's all. The movie is just empty, it doesn't entertain you in any way, I'm not sure from where it's all this hipe, I wish I had a lucid dream instead of wasting my time with this ! You've been warned !

Awful on so many levels
bahnjee14 April 2020
Jeez what a terrible waste of time. Note to the filmmakers: a crapton of spooky music does not a spooky movie make. What a crapfest. Please do not waste your time on this disjointed load of garbage.

Waste of time to put it nicely
pryorla7 July 2020
The acting wasn't too bad. The story was confusing and the pacing didn't help. It was hard to watch until the end and then it pissed me off because it was so awful.

What happened?
snootsncoots26 August 2020
This really wasn't very good. There were several story lines that could have been followed, but instead we get a little of this, a little of that, and really not much of anything about anything. I have no idea what the ending meant. I doubt I'm alone. It's a total mash up, and either the script writer wasn't very clear about what the story was supposed to be, or he was trying to be too clever and failed. A waste of time.

Good movie until the end.
dlmyst-2981315 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie tells 3 different stories and how each character interact. However, they screw the pooch at the end. They left it so open ended that it actually lost stars because of it. Normally I don't mind a movie that's open ended but this one didn't have any character resolutions. Hell it didn't give you any hints so you can somewhat make an informed conclusion on your own.

This movie is bizarre. I guess it's about a sleep paralysis study. But there's like some artist and some other wierdness and a murder and other murders and detectives and it's all kind of weird.

It was hard to follow, but I think I know what happened altho I'm not really sure!!!!!

It may not be a nightmare, but it's no dream either
umimelectric5 March 2020
A dramatic thriller based on the very creepy subject of sleep paralysis proves to have some very disturbing dream sequences, and a generally unsettling mood overall. The pacing is a little erratic, sometimes all over the place, with a muddy story that may leave you behind if you aren't giving it your full concentration. And even if you are, it may still lose you a little bit. Not bad, but not really great either, and probably a bit forgettable. If it were just a bit scarier and perhaps focused more on the nightmare sequences and less on the characters' lives I think it would have made a bigger impact...but with good production value and decent acting forgiving its flaws, it's a 6/10.

I really don't understand! The acting was really good but the lighting and the camerawork was SO cheap and the pacing was awful! The plot is sadly much better than the finished movie.

Brilliant
uvz-5442526 April 2024
Directed by Nathan Catucci, this is an indie psychological thriller that delves deep into the psyche through dreams and nightmares. The film cleverly blurs reality and illusion, captivating and mystifying its audience.

The narrative centers on Dr. Rich Freeman, portrayed by Santino Fontana, an ambitious psychology professor conducting a dream study. He hopes to demonstrate that viewing others' dreams can address psychological issues. As the research progresses, the boundaries between dreams and reality blur, revealing dark undercurrents affecting both participants and the doctor himself.

Fontana delivers a nuanced performance, capturing his character's obsession, which perfectly matches the film's eerie atmosphere. The supporting cast, including Laila Robins and Geoffrey Owens, deliver strong performances that add depth to the story.

Visually, the film is striking. The cinematography skillfully uses contrast between light and shadow to reflect the turbulent journey into the subconscious. Dream sequences are portrayed as both beautiful and haunting, drawing the audience further into the film's unsettling realm.

The screenplay, also written by Catucci, presents a unique premise and explores deep themes concerning the human mind's fragility. However, the narrative sometimes becomes convoluted, leaving some plot points unresolved. Despite this, sharp dialogue and good pacing keep the audience engaged.

Sound design is another highlight, with dissonant tones and abrupt changes enhancing the tense, unpredictable atmosphere of the dreams, enriching the viewer's experience.

"Impossible Monsters" shines in its thematic exploration, addressing ambition, research ethics, and the effects of unresolved trauma. These elements provoke thought about the protagonist's moral choices and the pressures driving them.

Although the film's climax feels rushed and some character arcs are underdeveloped, "Impossible Monsters" remains a compelling watch for fans of psychological thrillers who appreciate a challenge to their perceptions of reality.

Nope
Gonna be honest I watched it only for Santino Fontana.

The subject is very interesting but the movie doesn't deliver. It could have been so much better.

As for the music, didn't see the point in having it during dialogues, it was very annoying.

What did I just watch?
teodoramonika21 August 2021
1/10.

And more than bad... As far as I understood the theme of the film was supposed to be sleep paralysis which is mentioned maybe only for 5 minutes, so it is a completely missed theme. From beginning to end boring and vague, we are not introduced to the story and the characters are not worked out. Nothing is explained even in the end, it's totally out of action, it's not tense and it's not even a thriller. The genre might be a crime / drama and terribly bad. It was slow, it didn't hold my attention and even though it lasted less than an hour and a half it seemed like 3 and a half hours ... The end is especially unexplained. What is the point of this film anyway?

Watch something else. *Anything* else... waste of time.
diamonddax20 March 2021
There is a reason why this movie has so many BAD reviews.... you've been warned. Total waste of time. The first hour drags on without reason. I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. (For a solid hour) They could have had unsolved murders in the beginning leading up to x..... They could have started building CONTENT. They had a 15 minute movie idea that they tried to stretch to be a film... The ending was even worse. Seems like they ran out of money and couldn't finish the movie - the end is rushed and made no sense. It was as if they said "well, this movie isn't going anywhere so let's just wrap up production here" The "positive" reviews raving about the cast were obviously from the cast or people who worked on/for the film.
