Crop And Save
Kinda mysterious, but lacking in suspense and credibility. Some actors perform below par, making this movie a half hearted attempt at making something special.
NOT horror and not a real thriller at all. Kinda mysterious plot, which keeps the suspense barely alive to watch it through till the end. The sci-fi special effects are really rather unimpressive and sometimes even plain silly. I mean, when I wanna see a sci-fi picture I wanna be able to believe in another world. There are 2 ways of achieving that: one is by showing nothing physically and leaving everything what is strange/mysterious to the imagination. They didnt choose to do that though, instead they choose to use these quite unconvincing cgi effects. Bummer. Real bummer.
What's not enjoyable either are some of the supporting actors, who honestly act below par and would be better of in a tv movie. Oh hang on a minute, this is a tv (netflix) movie. Well it has that typical politically correct narrative, which wants to please everyone and consequentially turns out to be quite bland. Nathalie Portman, Oscar Isaac and Jennifer Jason Leigh all act really great though, but that cant save this movie from slowly going down the drain.
By now you might have guessed I am not enthusiastic about this movie, which fails at becoming great, while it could have been, with some better direction.
The story: Nathalie Portman (ex-military/biologist) strays off into the woods with a team of scientists to discover why a mysterious coloured cloud kills everybody who dares to enter. Oscar Isaac plays the sole fortunate person to have ever survived entering this mysterious cloud. Why did he survive? And what is lurking inside this mysterious killer cloud?
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)
Slowburning heist comedy with downer ending. Still an enjoyable typical seventies heist flick.
The spirit of the seventies is written all over this heist comedy. In a good way it represents the laid back and slowburning nature of many seventies movies. In another good way it represents the surprising story lines of many seventies movies, which all aimed to be different in some way or another...
But different isnt always better. This movie is different because of it's sudden dramatic downer ending, which doesnt really fit the nature of this lighthearted heist comedy though. But there you have it, it was typical of the seventies to experiment with odd endings or other new plot turns. Be prepared for a somewhat slow movie, with a big downer ending and just enjoy the ride.
The story is simple: Clint Eastwood is gonna do a heist together with a young help, played terrifically by a very young Jeff Bridges. Will they succeed or be double crossed by a bunch of other gangsters?
Sexy Beast (2000)
NOT a gangster movie, but a PSYCHOLOGICAL portrait of gangsters. Terrific acting. Sticky suspense. Refreshing original story. Maniacally unnerving.
BEWARE: this is NOT a typical gangster movie at all, but a terrific psychological portrait about gangsters pulling each other down into a cesspit of evil driven manipulation.
Simply said: one gangster is pressuring another gangster into doing a job. And that's what the WHOLE movie is about. Only that. 90 minutes of psychological mindgames played by one gangster on another. Will one gangster (Ray Winstone) crack under pressure, by another gangster (Ben Kingsley), into doing a job? That's the crucial plot of this movie.
Magnificent acting. Truly magnificent. Many gangster movies are about tough and cool looking gangsters, this movie is the complete opposite, because it is entirely about the weak spot of one particular gangster, who just wants to retire from crime and enjoy family life. Refreshingly original story with great plot turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Great photography. Lovely soundtrack. Just one heck of a NON gangster movie about gangsters. Not suited for the action loving masses, but the arthouse audiences could surely revel about this gem.
The Art of the Steal (2013)
7 stars because it's just an ok gangster movie. But I give 8 stars for the excellent jokes. Real sharp and witty.
The heist genre is old, so what is new and worth watching about this particular heist movie? The jokes. They are really sharp, fast, original and witty. And those jokes are delivered by a bunch of great actors: Matt Dillon, Kurt Russell and a delightful cool, calm and collected Terence Stamp. They all act really good.
The story is tight and fast moving and funny. Kurt Russell plays a gangster in need of money. Well, that´s news! He desperately needs money though and that's the reason he agrees to do an impossibly difficult heist. Will he succeed anyway?
In Time (2011)
Story might sound silly at first, but it is executed credibly. Unsentimental portrayal of survival of the poor. Good acting, suspenseful story and beautiful photography.
I had my doubts when I read about this story in which people all die after the age of 25, unless they start paying big money to add more years to their short lives. Did sound silly to me, but I am glad I tried watching it anyway, because however silly and futuristic this story may sound, it is directed, acted and photographed with impressive suspense and credibility.
The futuristic settings are run down and gloomy, without any scifi stuff. I liked that look a lot. It's basically a portrait of almost the same society we live in nowadays, only a few decades ahead. The story is a portrayal of the survival of poor people in society, who cant afford to live much longer than 25 years old. Justin Timberlake is one of them. The rich can buy time to prolong their lives, the poor can't. But by accident Justin Timberlake gets the chance to live a hundred years, while his poor family and friends are about to die soon. What will he do with the long life he has been given?
Without being depressive or sentimental about this struggle between the poor and the rich, this movie is quite suspenseful, with enough riveting action. It is also quite an impressive emotional character driven story with really good acting by Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. This movie is definitely a bit better than one would judge by it's cover. Not a terrific movie, but a very decent action / light drama flick.
Quick Change (1990)
Really funny and lovely movie, with a great performance by Bill Murray, who robs a bank, but then has extreme difficulties getting out of town, because all sorts of disasters keep raining down on him, while he is attempting to flee.
Geena Rowlands plays the love interest of Bill Murray and she adds to the lovely nature of this story, in which there is a budding romance blossoming, while they are on the run from the police.
What can I say, what I havent already said? It's darn funny and that is all it needs to be. For all ages. Young and old could really love this feel good funny heist movie.
Enjoyable high speed action gangster flick, which is only let down by some cheesy Hollywood feelgood cliches.
All you could wish for in an action packed gangster movie: great action, some good suspense, nice acting performances and a (reasonable) credible story.
Any bad? This movies only let down is it's use of some cheesy Hollywood feel good sentiments. It could have been a tougher, emotionally nerve wrecking story, but it is definitely marketed towards the popular masses, with only subdued mild violence, some romance with Kate Winslet and a feel good end. These somewhat cheap characteristics dont make this a bad movie, merely not an excellent one.
The story: Mark Wahlberg has to smuggle millions of dollars across the border as a favor to a drugsdealer. If he fails at this smuggling job, his wife (Kate Winslet) will get killed. Will he succeed?
Man on a Ledge (2012)
It will do. Not credible, not really thrilling, not cool, but it will do if there is nothing better to watch.
A cop gets framed and convicted for stealing a diamond, while he claims to be innocent. The cop escapes and plans an ingenious scheme to prove his innocence. Will he succeed in convincing everybody he didnt steal the diamond?
This story is not very believable, to put it politely. But it is still an enjoyable (1 watch) heist flick for all those fans of the genre. Expect mediocrity though and you wont be too disappointed by the stupidity of the plot. The actors involved are rather good, which makes up for the unbelievable plot. And there is definitely a cliffhanger to be enjoyed every 10 minutes, therefore I did wanted to see it till the very end.
6 star heist movie. Makes pass the time nicely.
The Hot Rock (1972)
Silly, but charming story, with a lovely young Robert Redford. Seventies written all over it..in a good, but also in a somewhat cheesy way...
I must have seen it before, but I have forgotten about it. It isnot really worth remembering to be honest, but it is still quite a charming heist movie, with the seventies written all over it, in a good, relaxed way, but also in a somewhat cheesy way.
Robert Redford in his youngest years, looks so carefree and playful, it's a joy to watch him act a bankrobber who messes up a diamant heist and consequently has to think of all sorts of ingenieous and witty ways to retrieve the valuable stone which he "mislocated" during the first attempt to steal it.
Robert Redford saves this movie from being nothing else than an ordinary heist movie. Redford has got that playful, innocent charisma, which makes this movie into a family kind of heist movie, without any rough stuff, but full of witty plot turns and dialogues. Charming, really charming and playful, but nothing, certainly nothing out of the ordinary. Just an old (somewhat cheesy) seventies comedy suited for the entire family...
Layer Cake (2004)
Boring. Not cool, while it desperatedly wants to be. No suspense. Little action. British humdrum.
This gangster movie desperatedly wants to be cool, BUT it isnt. Even worse it is kinda boring. Not a lot of action, correction, almost no action. What it has lots of is supposedly "cool" talk between gangsters. BUT it isnt cool. It is a bad british surrogate of an American gangster story. Silly accents, stereotypical gangsters. Boring.
All bad? There is some good though. Michael Gambon plays an excellent rich greedy b*stard. He is really great. But he has got a supporting role, he cant save this movie from drowning in humdrum...
Action packed with witty dialogues and good acting and a suspenseful adventurous story. All you could wish for in a new edition of the Indiana Jones series. Great fun.
Good new edition to the Indiana Jones series. Action packed, with terrific, witty stunts and special effects that are quite wonderful and playful. Good acting by all the actors involved. Great chemistry between them as well. The story is suspenseful for the full 2 hours, never boring a minute, on the contrary, this is one of those movies that you feel could keep going on and on.
Perhaps not the best of all the editions, but I dare say it is perhaps the second best of the entire series.
Endnote: There is a lot of negative flack on Imdb from fans of the older series. They cherish the old series in their heart and have troubles with a new edition for reasons of sentiment I guess. But if you have never seen an Indiana Jones picture before then one could easily enjoy this movie quite a lot. For young and old, but not too young, because it is still quite boisterous. Above 12 years would be a safe bet for family viewing...
The Big Fix (1978)
Outdated seventies movie, lacking suspense, lacking drama, but full of corny seventies music, cheap photography and an unbelievable story. Richard Dreyfuss saves it. Barely...
In my quest to watch all the older Richard Dreyfuss movies I stumbled upon this one. Wish I hadnt, because it is boring, outdated and not credible. It is basically a cheap seventies tv movie, released for the cinemas.
Not that it is terribly bad. It isnt, but it just becomes tedious to watch after half an hour when I realise there isnt gonna be ANY real drama, there isnt gonna be ANY real suspense. Richard Dreyfuss acts well. He does save this tv movie from drowning. Let's forget I ever saw it.
The story for those still interested: private investigator Richard Dreyfuss starts searching for someone who is threatening a politician. With a lot of divorce talk mixed in between, because that is what they thought was kinda special in the seventies. Mixing boring ex-wife alimony talk with private eye work does NOT rock my boat though.
Let It Ride (1989)
Gamble till you are broke, then gamle some more till your wife threatens to leave you, then you gamble some more because you feel "lucky"...
Teri Garr and Richard Dreyfuss are an actors match made in heaven. They already starred in the magnificent classic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and now they both star in this throwaway comedy about addicted gambler Richard Dreyfuss, who just cant stop gambling till he loses everything. Or will he be lucky and win the biggest jackpot?
Great acting, but most of the supporting actors are very stereotypical, which makes it somewhat of an irritating watch at moments, because of all the over the top, almost slapstick, behaviour. Nothing special, nothing really funny, just amusing, charming with a feel good ending...
What About Bob? (1991)
Fruity psychiatric patient Bill Murray is stalking his stuckup psychiater Richard Dreyfuss. Both actors excell at acting. Funny.
Psychiatric patient Bill Murray stalks his psychiatrist and his family while they are on a holiday. The family seems to like Bill Murray though, however crazy he gets, to great frustration of psychiatrist Richard Dreyfuss, who merely wants to get rid of this stalking patient.
Both actors truly act at their best, Bill Murray being over the top silly and Richard Dreyfuss acting as if he is constantly about to implode with anger. Never before has stalking been so funny and relaxed! Recommended for fans of these actors and for anyone who wants to see a comedy that makes fun of all the do's and dont's when one goes into therapy. Funny and charming comedy.
Mr. Holland's Opus (1995)
Sweet, but boring. Disney style kind of movie, with no real drama whatsoever. Too many stereotypical characters in a row are tedious to watch after a while. Nice ish...
This movie follows music teacher Richard Dreyfuss teach music to American kids from the sixties to the nineties. Sweet story, but lacking in any kind of real drama, because of it's Disney kind of style of direction, meaning every plot turn is neatly drawn between the politically correct lines, there are no surprises, nobody gets offended and it ends up being a quite boring picture to watch, that lasts a whopping 2 and half hours. 45 minutes too long.
Still a sweet picture, maybe best recommended for families with young kids who want to become a musician, because the spirit of this movie is an uplifting positive one, that anyone can find joy in playing music if their heart is in it...
Mad Dog Time (1996)
Terrific actor's movie with witty, intelligent, original shootouts the likes you have never seen before. Produced AND acted by Richard Dreyfuss himself. Unknown gem!
For fans of the quirky gangster genre this movie is highly recommended. Why? Because the story is witty, intelligent and surprising. And suspenseful. But the acting is what makes this movie really special. Richard Dreyfuss produced this movie himself, so he must have had a lot of muscle in attracting the best actors and he DID! Just let me dizzy you with names like Jeff Goldblum, Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin, Diane Lane. They all play at the top of their game. But it gets better, because there are lots of hilarious cameos by: director Rob Reiner, Richard Pryor, singer Billy Idol and last but not least Burt Reynolds.
The story: numerous gangsters challenge each other in (witty) quirky shootouts as a sort of a competition to see who is the fastest gunman in town. 2 seductive women (Diane Lane and Ellen Barkin) are the main prize for the winner.
Everything about this movie is off beat, quirky and not at all what one would usually expect from a gangster movie. That's possibly the reason for the below average Imdb rating, because the masses usually dont like these quirky movies, in which it is not clear whether one should take it seriously or if one should laugh. The Coen Brothers perfected this gangster drama/comedy genre in which they walk a perfect line between suspense and comedy. Mad Dog Time has got a similar kind of spirit. Mad Dog Time is one of Jeff Goldblum' s best performances of his carreer. He oozes charm, mystery and danger, while being unmistakingbly funny as well. This tightrope of comedy and suspense doesnt work all the time, so this isnt a masterpiece, but it is certainly refreshingly original and therefore incredibly enjoyable to watch. Unknown gem from the nineties!
Night Falls on Manhattan (1996)
Straight story about investigating dirty cops. What lifts this movie beyond average are the great acting performances and a stylish direction. Nothing spectacular though...
We all have heard and seen this story many times: dirty cops take money from gangsters. Storywise this movie has no surprises, but what makes it better than average are the great acting performances by almost every actor in it. Really decent acting. Topped with a stylish direction by Sidney Lumet this movie will certainly please most fans of these dirty cops movies. It isnt a spectacularly great cop movie though, just a really decent one....
The story: Andy Garcia is investigating dirty cops, who take bribes from drugdealers. Andy Garcia's father gets accused of being a dirty cop as well. Will Andy Garcia be righteous and harsh and investigate his own father or will he start bending the law to save his own family?
Great supporting roles by Richard Dreyfuss and James Ghandolfini. Beautiful photography of New York City. Charming jazzy soundtrack. Overall just a really stylish dirty cop movie and although it never reaches excellence, it is still very enjoyable.
Harrrison Ford's wife has suddenly gone missing in Paris. Where could she be? Harrison Ford starts searching for his wife...
The start of this movie is reasonably suspenseful, because Harrison Ford's wife has suddenly gone missing in Paris. This mystery is being portrayed in a quite fascinating way. However later on in the movie, (while STILL searching for his wife), Harrison Ford gets involved in action chases with bad guys. From then on this movie starts to become less interesting, because director Roman Polanski isnt an action movie director whatsoever and the action is somewhat clumsy looking. There is more bad news: the other French supporting actors are rather mediocre. And the photography, editing and sound are looking and sounding quite bland. That is an astonishing NEGATIVE achievement to be able to make Paris look bland...
This movie fails to become grand, while it wants to a sweeping romantic thriller. Which it is not. Still good enough and worthwile a watch, because of the great suspense at the start and Harrison Ford's overall decent acting performance. But this is nothing above average. What's worse, near the end, things become increasingly unbelievable storywise...
Back to the seventies! Greatest trucker movie ever. When truckers were true cowboys...
Classic seventies trucker movie. The best. With a great heroic role by Kris Kristofferson who plays a trucker on the run from the entire policeforce. All the truckers start supporting this trucker on the run by forming a convoy. Can this huge trucker convoy still be stopped or will they keep on truckin come hell or high water?
If you like underdogs who conquer all, especially the cops, then this flick is highly recommended because of it's free fighting spirit of the Amercan trucker. Just terrific seventies macho action fun.
Presumed Innocent (1990)
Decent court drama, with an ingenious plot. Slowburning, yet with a constant suspenseful mood. Good acting.
Decent courtdrama with an ingenious plot and good acting by Harisson Ford, who gets accused of murdering a woman, he has had an affair with. All the murder clues lead to him. Did he do it?
Director Alan J Pakula is known for his suspenseful, intelligent plots and this movie is no different. However slowburning in nature, it stays fascinating to watch till the end how Harisson Ford is trying to defend himself against the murder accusation.
Recommended for Harisson Ford fans. Any lover of court dramas might find an enjoyable watch with this movie as well.
Silly, yet still reasonably funny Mathew Broderick medieval knights movie.
Rather silly, but still reasonably enjoyable, because any fan of Mathew Broderick knows his funny charm is irresistable.
But there are many better Mathew Broderick movies out there. This is one of his earliest performances, when he was still an unknown actor and the movies story and direction are not really tailored towards the typical Broderick humor we all like so much, although they have tried to make it funny, but it feels a bit wooden, unfortunately.
This picture got several awards for best sound effects, which is quite hilarious, because the soundtrack is hilariously outdated and corny sounding and so are the special soundeffects.
It is not a true family movie, not a real teenager movie, nor is it a real knights movie, although it comes close. It is a mash up of different styles. I look upon it as a funny vehicle to show Mathew Broderick off in medieval times. Great supporting role by the very young and lovely Michelle Pfeifer.
The story? Really? Mathew Broderick is emprisoned and escapes and meets the lovely Michell Pfeifer and knight Rutger Haurer and all sorts of funny medieval action events follow...
Great action flick from the same makers of Lethal Weapon and The Matrix. Action packed, suspenseful, good acting and some funny oneliners.
Direction, production and screenplay were done by the same makers who also created the Lethal Weapon series and The Matrix, among others. These guys know how to make a enjoyable, suspenseful action movie. And they succeeded again with ASSASINS.
Good acting by Julianne Moore, Antonio Banderas and one of Sylvester Stallone better roles of his carreer. If you like one of these actors, this movie can surely be recommended because each of them acts really good, despite this being a standard formula Hollywood action movie. But this is definitely a bit better than average. I will award it with a royal 7 stars.
Great action. Impressive stunts. Contineuous suspense for the full 2 hours and 15 minutes, that's impressive, because most action movies get tiresome after a while, but not this one. This movie keeps on pressing the right buttons.
The story: two professional hitmen are sent out to collect a extremely valuable disc, worth millions. They both try to outsmart eachother all the time, trying to obtain this disc. Jullianne Moore is an innocent bystander who gets swept into this thrilling story. Good action fun.
Silly, childish and going nowhere...
Outdated copmovie from a director who made numerous other teenager movies, a few of which were actually good. This one is NOT good. Or even funny. These male sex jokes might only be suited for teenagers and even they will have trouble laughing at these cops who are peeping into a woman´s house during a stakeout. Oops I see her naked. If you think that is funny then be my guest and start watching it.
Richard Dreyfuss made many other pictures that were way much better than this movie, which he was forced to do due to contractual obligations to the filmstudios.
Blood Ties (2013)
This movie wants to be a French drama and an American gangster movie, yet these 2 genres dont blend too well, resulting in an ok ish cliche gangster movie
Great actors are featuring in this movie. James Caan is terrific. Clive Owen performs great as well. The effort to make something special is noticeable. It is certainly not a bad gangster movie, merely one lacking in true drama or guts.
What do you get when you mix a French drama director with an American gangster tale? Something that just doesnt blend very well. It is neither a tough gangster movie, nor a great dramatic movie.
The story is portraying the love and hate relationship between 2 brothers, one a cop, one a gangster. But the story is too longwinding, with too many characters and the drama never gets fiery.
Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Completely over the top. Shootergame like action. Non stop hilarious killing sprees. Completely silly story, yet with great acting by Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti
The title Shoot 'em up tells you exactly what you are gonna get: a contineous rampage of killing sprees. And some chases. And 1 sex scene. And lots of ACDC heavy metal music. And a great performance, (as a funny bad guy), by Paul Giamatti.
However ridiculous and silly this action movie is, the 2 leading actors are really great and enjoyable to watch. It is them who make this silly story quite enjoyable to watch.
Definitely NOT recommended for anyone wishing for a serious credible action story, but gamer fans particularly could really dig this kinda over the top action stuff...
