Excellent Starter Documentary for WWI
carsal720 February 2019
For those unfamiliar with World War I, I recommend this documentary. It gives a brief, yet accurate account of the war from it's beginnings to it's ultimate metamorphosis to World War II. This production entices the viewer to delve even deeper into the various battles and powers at play. For instance, Kaiser Wilhelm II was Queen Victoria's eldest grandchild. It makes me wish there were as many documentaries about WWI as there are about WWII.

Should be titled "Ludendorff"
datadwarf7 August 2016
Armistice gives a superficial overview of the World War (before we knew enough to number them) told largely from the German military perspective. For those with a mild curiosity about what happened in Europe one hundred years ago, it might be adequate.

This is essentially a hatchet job on the de facto military dictator of Germany during the Great War. While it is historically accurate as far as it goes, how far can you go in 55 minutes?

The main thrust of "Armistice" is that the ominous "stab in the back" quote which Ludendorff made blaming the left for Germany's defeat, inspired Hitler. Again, true as far as it goes. However...

For an excellent British documentary treatment of, probably, the stupidest war ever fought, see 14 Diaries of the Great War. It is eight times as long, but told from multiple perspectives, yielding MUCH greater depth.

What Did He Say?
lurch-1716 January 2024
Good documentary if you could only hear what was said! Reminders of British movies from the forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties before the Brits finally understood that the viewer actually needs to hear what the speaker is saying.

Uneven blasts of totally unnecessary and inappropriate music that adds nothing to the story and drowns out what the narrator is saying. Uneven volume throughout. The narrator sometimes tapering off to mumbling or whispering at the end of sentences.

But, alas, watch it anyway for historical content. It exposes the idiocy of the United States involvement in World War I.

Now I must watch the second half.
