Family's Sake, the perfect bad filmmaking example
jackie_davis14 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As someone who from time to time watches short films for a possible new talent discovery, I came across Family's Sake and thought I would give it a shot. Family's Sake tells the story of a Muslim girl who falls in love with a non-Muslim guy, putting her life at risk due to a conservative Muslim family. The story is as cliché as it gets and has not a touch of originality to it, making it all feel too much like a poorly executed autobiography. Although director Sam Shaib has tried to convince viewers that Muslim vs. Non-Muslim relationships is an issue that ought not be disregarded, I must disagree.

Family's Sake is a joke, with acting that is as good as pig's poop, bipolar shots, and camera movements that will put you in a state of dizziness.

I have seen many talented aspiring filmmakers, but Sam Shaib, a film student, as stated on his IMDb profile, possesses the voice of an amateur. Having suffered through the whole Family's Sake film, the worst I have seen this year, I can now say that Shaib's unoriginal films and lack of directorial talent is prove that he chose the wrong major in college.

Good subject

I felt compelled to express my admiration of the courage of the film writer and director. In a society where we walk on eggshell about this particular religion's problems, this short ( that should have been a Feature) is telling a shocking empowering story. The main character, the mother is scary but yet sympathetic, the writer is telling us that she doesn't know how else to deal with her daughter's mistake. The dialogue could've been better, as well as some of the side actors, but in general its a good short that I got the pleasure to see in NY short film festival . The music is very touching and helped tell the story better. I did not enjoy the opening sequence but I feel the rest of the film is well put together. Hope we see more of these stories.
