Ambitious, but ultimately lackluster and inaccessible dark comedy
quincytheodore5 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
There have been many movies which utilize dark theme of crime cynically, even amongst them Laugh Killer Laugh is one of the quirkiest. It takes so much liberty on presenting the dark narrative, it ends up dry and incoherent. The most notable anomalies are the exhausting script and the rigid lead character which frankly repels the audience's sympathy.

This is the story of Frank Stone, a gangster in lamentation. He wanders unemotionally at times, barely uttering words for the majority of the movie. Meanwhile, his colleague narrates the story with too much crude delivery, it becomes less audience friendly. It uses plenty of self-awareness about the genre and deliberately makes fun of it, half of the plot is Frank attending writing class as a sort of realism commentary.

However, it's done with tiresome dialogues resembling drunken banter. Heck, some of these are actually drunken banters. They talk in cryptic, brash and repetitive manner, occasionally to themselves and even the audience. The screenplay seems forced, and despite the ambitious take on the gritty subject, the movie feels detached. It demands patience from audience since it takes quite a while to build up and even then it's littered with inconsistent narrative.

Acting and cinematography are made to emulate real life. The shots are all taken in diagonal claustrophobic angle and most of the scenes have heavy 80s action movie atmosphere. Unfortunately, the characters are either highly exaggerated or extremely cliché. It also displays incredibly gory scene out of nowhere, which is far from appealing.

While it tries to deliver cynicism on crime element, the bizarre script and unsympathetic characters will deter casual viewers and genre fans alike.

Watchable NCY grindhouse throwback
a_chinn29 June 2017
I had no idea that Kamal Ahmed, one of the Jerky Boys, has been writing and directing low budget films for a number of years. This grindhouse throwback to the gritty NYC 1970s crime flicks, the likes of of Abel Ferrara or Larry Cohen, is fun for fans of that subgenre, though I'm not sure others will get much out of this film. The excellent William Forsythe plays a hit-man who follows a woman to her creative writing class (taught by the big brother from "ET") where he begins writing stories based on his crimes to impress her. It's an interesting set up, that felt very Larry Cohen-esque, but the characters and plot never really grabbed me. The film seems more of an exercise in style, with the players acting out film archetypes rather than fully fleshed out characters. Tom Sizemore even shows up, in true B-picture fashion, for what must have been a one-day shoot talking directly to the camera and not interacting with any other actors. Still, when all of this is packaged in an obvious nostalgia piece, right down to an amazing retro style title sequence and score (by Scott Hampton), this film is enjoyable enough for fans of films like "Ms. .45" or "God Told Me To."

Not a clown
kosmasp2 September 2016
So why would the Killer laugh then? How is he funny to misquote a character portrayed by Joe Pesci? Some things you may never get an answer too. But does the title really matter? Maybe it's supposed to be self deprecating, considering the mood our main character is in almost all the time.

And we get a really good main actor here with William Forsythe. So the ingredients are good (one Fanboy is ecstatic about this to a point he'd eat up anything he gets served, which is fine, but let's keep our focus on the bigger picture), but the overall result does have some major issues. Mean streets this isn't, mainly because while it is gritty it never captures the quality that movie had. Still if you like decent crime dramas with a low budget, you will have fun with this. Especially because it doesn't choose the route of beautiful (though a bit more quality acting from the other main players would've been helpful)

It deserves 5 stars at most
deloudelouvain13 January 2017
Kamal Ahmed tried to make an ambitious movie but in my eyes he just failed. Despise William Forsythe that tries to make the movie a bit interesting the rest of the cast doesn't bring much to the movie. And also the story is just too slow and sometimes makes not much sense to make it enjoyable to watch. I even fell asleep for the last five minutes and I even didn't bother to rewind to watch those five minutes over. I couldn't care less how it ended. It's one of those movies you watch once, without much interest, and that you will completely forget about in a month. I'm even going to write the title down so that I don't forget I already watched it and that it wasn't good. Don't want to make the same mistake twice.

A worthy maiden voyage
Surrealsax14 June 2015
William Forsythe does more with facial expressions and reactions (and nonchalance) than actors who might have played this role in a ham-fisted way. The 180 degree turn of the role gave him a chance to sink his teeth into it. The writing is excellent which is how he got Mr. Forsythe in my opinion. We are sensing something bad is going to happen and it does. The directing is a bit much with the camera at moments but forgivable for a maiden voyage. The editor may not have been given the shots required for smooth transitions and the music is 70's TV-esqe. The D.P. is also excellent. Three stars. I will look forward to another film by this filmmaker. Congratulations!

Solid Movie All Around
caputomedia2 June 2015
This was totally worth the watch for me. I think I connected to this film as a New York City native and maybe an understanding and compassion for the everyday New Yorker that lives removed from Manhattan's isolation is required here. Frank Stone, to me, is the story of that interesting person that so perfectly fits in the scenery a crowded NYC subway car or eating a midnight meal in a pizzeria, the kind whose story you will wonder about the whole way home. In a sense, Kamal Ahmed is kind of a Raymond Carver, an everyman's filmmaker in an era of comic book blockbusters and spoof sequels. Laugh Killer Laugh isn't without it's flaws, but I'd be hard pressed to find a movie that has made every viewer happy. Laugh Killer Laugh is a simple and entertaining film about love, loss and revenge.

Totally Worth the Watch !
jb-909259 June 2015
Great job all the way around.Tom Sizemore,Victor Colicchio and Bianca Hunter perform well but William Forsythe as Frank Stone stands out from the rest of the cast. The others did a good job but Forsythe is just a cut above the rest in this one.He pretty much is playing two characters in one as his personality is completely opposite after he awakens from the coma.He is just about great in every role he plays. My favorites are Ice in Stone Cold and Manny Horvitz in Boardwalk.Excellent story by Kamal Ahmed who is both the writer and director. Wish there were more movies of this style out there. It has that old school style to it.With so much garbage out there nowadays, this one is a breath of fresh air. A definite much watch.

Very good watch..
icetech12 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love odd movies..and i really liked this one.. The role was perfect for William Forsythe and he perfect for the roll.. Some people will take issue with the way it was filmed, it's grainy. It's gritty.. The acting was really good. And William really seemed to get into the roll. Best part.. NO COMIC BOOK CRAP!!! I can't be the only one sick of comic book movies being the only real option? Even if it weren't for that i would still like this movie a lot..

The only downsides are that i think it could be cut down 15-20 minutes and still be good.. but it wasn't draining.. just a touch slow about 3/4 through..

And i hated arti lange showing up.. i have issues with junkies being handed the world and throwing it away.. let alone not being funny at all when that is supposed to be your job.. But he is only in it for a few seconds.. so no biggy :)

If they could figure a convincing sequel i would gladly watch it:)

I think William has gotten to an age that he could play a VERY good detective ala Sam Spade. but i am digressing.

P.S. wish i could buy the car they used for him in this.. LOVE it :)

Keeps your attention after the first 20 min
juliebigge17 January 2019
It's a bit slow and jagged at the beginning. You find you have to put alot of pieces together to understand the lead character's background, which, to say the least...is disturbing. There really should be an R rating on this one... No obvious nudity per sae but ... The lead woman has very large breasts and wears shirts that are revealing as too tight with cleavage. Also a man unzips his pants and we see a peak of his pelvic region. This movie may be very disturbing to people who experienced sexual abuse as children...so please be advised. Again, I wouldn't watch this one with kids if I were you.

HAPPINESS DON'T EXIST FOR YOU
nogodnomasters30 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Frank Stone (William Forsythe) recalls being abused growing up in an orphanage. He is socially awkward, quiet, and serious. He works for mobster Tough Tony (Victor Colicchio) as a second story man. He has no trouble killing anyone who gets in his way. Frank assumes an identify and takes a class in creative writing in order to meet Jackie (Bianca Hunter) another troubled soul.

Frank lives in the 50's. His possessions are old but well kept. He even has his own 50's style crime theme music. The film takes off in a different direction after Frank has his strange epiphany. This is a different kind of crime thriller. It combines the old with the new through a disturbed mind. An interesting film.

Completely got it
cbsilvercat6 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of Film Noir films from the late 40's through late 50's I got what LAUGH KILLER LAUGH was supposed to be. It was part parody, part homage but done with a unique style that added a touch of dark comedy. Skillfully done in the vein of most "noirs" (which were classically done with low budgets to test out potential talent with writers/directors and actors) William Forsythe (FRANK STONE) plays the classic hired introverted gangster that is haunted and abused by memories of his childhood Orphange Caretaker and his current low level hoodlum constituents to the point where Forsythe becomes an almost Emit Kelly the clown type of character that has a perpetual sad face. His transformation to an extroverted mad comedian comes when he awakens from a coma. The beauty of the movie is it takes you on a serpentine ride with story and emotion but never apologizes for not spelling out all the details in exposition. Wonderfully shot in parts of NYC untouched by gentrification,LAUGH KILLER LAUGH takes you on a funny, scary ride to days past when film noirs were the underbelly of Hollywood glamor and glitz.

A unique film
ogreaterone13 June 2015
A cool new way to look at gangster films. A unique twist a solid cast what more could you ask for? This was one I have not only seen once I have watched it a few times. It is very interesting and the more you watch it the more things you will pick up on.... I would love to write in here just what they are, but part of the fun is finding them yourselves. The other is that I do not want to ruin ti for you.... It is a must see film.

We often ask for filmmakers to be more original, well here you have it... The Writer/Director has taken us through his own minds eye and the journey is quite a ride... I am getting tired of seeing the same old boring mob movies. Laugh Killer Laugh is not boring and it is not cliché'...

You need to watch this one... We need more films like this... Originality please!

This is the Story of the Joker!
pinkwerewolf-11 May 2016
If you are a fan of the comic masterpiece "The Killing Joke", then this is your movie. Give this title a chance and do not look at the neigh sayers that did not get the joke. ;) This film has an outstanding 80's feel to it with the soundtrack and camera edits. The acting from the lead is fantastic/ Oscar worthy with his stone cold personality going from one thing to the next. This also has a beautiful gritty gangster vibe that QT would lend ever so naturally with little to no budget.

For those that know the story of the Joker from the Killing Joke title, you will get the influence that takes place here. Watching Frank Stone morph into something totally different is extremely satisfying and makes you want more! There are some great shootout scenes that are not over the top and make sense, and the lead female actress feels very down to earth and real. There are some corny 80's elements that do nothing but lead into a special charm that this film needed. I would give this a 10 if not for the somewhat slow beginning, but this movie once it unwinds becomes very entertaining.

I say give it a shot.

A Unique Must See Revenge Film!
dannynsk26 April 2015
Laugh Killer Laugh stars William Forsythe as a jewel thief with absolutely no sense of humor or personality. Forsythe's character, Frank Stone, grew up an orphan and was abused as a child. With no family or friends, he just pulls jobs, kills anyone that gets in his way, and is a good earner for the Mob guys that keep him busy.

Eventually, his interest in a girl and opening up about himself for the first time gets him into trouble with his employer, who decides they no longer need his services.

After spending some time in a coma, Stone awakens with not just a sense of humor, but as a guy with no sense at all. He goes after his ex-employer's crew, but now with a different outlook on life and death.

The cast is brilliant and one of the best roles in the film is the Orphanage Headmaster played by Tom Sizemore. I also really liked Jackie, the love interest played by Bianca Hunter, and the Mafia enforcer who is played by Larry Romano from King of Queens. There are tons of small roles as well, played by actors like Kevin Corrigan, Artie Lange, James Lorenz and even Angel Salazar of Scarface (1983) and Carlito's Way (1993).

Laugh Killer Laugh is an instant revenge classic that leaves you cheering for the anti-hero. It's a disturbing yet endearing film loaded with violence, vengeance and a bunch of laughs along the way.

Hard Hitting and Gritty, Yet Righteous and Compassionate
martymercedes24 April 2015
The humanistic side of a tortured soul played by William Forsythe is developed throughout the movie and is what drives the theme and his motivation,Frank stone is the jewel thief who has a lot to contend with. you will find yourself engrossed in this movie as it goes in different directions it has the elements of action, love, greediness compassion and comedy,Tom Sizemore's character is dark and heartless what is perfect for this movie.I guarantee that when the movie comes to an end you will want it to continue for at least another hour thoroughly enjoyable and I urge all who read this to see this movie at least once! Bravo! job well done by the whole cast and especially the director and writer Kamal Ahmed

Laugh Killer Laugh
shirleyfeed5 June 2015
The movie has comedy, gangster interaction, and emotion. It was totally worth watching. I felt for the main character because he was abused as a young boy. He grew up mad and alone. He had no family or friends to turn to. He finally meets the love his life and she suffers the consequences of his life choices. I knew there would be comedy involved when I heard Kamil was the director. I've always been a fan of his especially in my younger years when he was a jerky boy. I was in suspense while laughing throughout the movie. Very entertaining. My favorite movies include laughter and suspense and this had it I urge you to buy this move and watch it . You won't regret it.

A must see!
joelginadavis4 June 2015
Wonderful!!! Laugh killer Laugh is one of the few films in which I personally did not find any significant weakness even after many viewings. From the direction, to the acting, to the storyline, to the score, Laugh killer Laugh has the word classic written all over, and it really is not much of a surprise that it is now considered by many one of the top five movies of all time. The movie has both a comedy feel as well as a gangster vibe. The writing and director is superb. Rarely a movie has defined or re-defined a genre as much as this one did for "gangster movies", but its influence goes well beyond that. If you look deep enough you get a feel for something that is truly different in film making.

Worth a watch! Thanks Mike Lyonns

Loved it!
cobracupcake9 June 2015
I had high expectations of the film, especially once that I knew William Forsythe was going to be in it. I support every project he does, I have been a fan of his since I was eight years old (I used to watch his films with my dad) and I am now in my thirties. However, my high expectations of the film were exceeded. The film itself was absolutely terrific, the casting was wonderful. All in all, this movie was a complete win for me personally and I cannot say enough good things about it. As soon as it was over, I went around the house proclaiming how great it was. A lot of sleepy people kind of annoyed at me right now, but completely worth it.

A must see!!! This movie kept you in suspense and made you laugh at the same time. They also did a great job in making the audience feel for the main character. It was sad to see how his childhood affected him. Im a huge fan of the main characters. It was great seeing them perform all together. I was especially intrigued to go watch when I heard a jerky boy directed it. Kamil always made me laugh in my younger years. I knew it would be entertaining. The movie was well written and directed, It had a great storyline. I found myself glued to the movie as it went in different directions. A big shout out to the cast and crew. Very entertaining.

Great Noir/ Gangster flick
kingofnewyorkcity23 July 2015
These are the kind of movies I miss.

"You don't make up for your sins in church; you do it in the streets; you do it at home. The rest is bullshit."

Laugh killer Laugh is a powerful tale of urban sin and guilt that marks Kamal Ahmeds's arrival as an important cinematic voice and features electrifying performances from William Forsythe and Tom Sizemore. Great stuff, worth a watch.

Loved the cameo by Artie Lang.

Hopefully these guys keep making movies. I would love to see what comes next
