The West Bank - In September 1948, Folke Bernadotte was murdered in Jerusalem. He was the first mediator in the conflict between Palestine and Israel. In 1950, the UN began its work to help the Palestinian refugees. UNRWA was established for this effort, which was expected to last a few months. Today, UNWRA still exists. Head of UNWRA in the West Bank was Gun-Britt Andersson, now State Secretary at the Ministry of Social Affairs. We follow her on various missions in Gaza, Jericho and Jerusalem.

The Rwanda genocide of 1994, was a planned campaign of mass murder in Rwanda that occurred over the course of some 100 days in April-July 1994. The genocide was conceived by extremist elements of Rwanda's majority Hutu population who planned to kill the minority Tutsi population and anyone who opposed those genocidal intentions. It is estimated that some 200,000 Hutu, spurred on by propaganda from various media outlets, participated in the genocide. More than 800,000 civilians-primarily Tutsi, but also moderate Hutu-were killed during the campaign. As many as 2,000,000 Rwandans fled the country during or immediately after the genocide. What did the UN do to avoid the disaster? "If we had been gorillas instead, the world would surely have been more upset!" says a bitter woman in the program.

A question for the future The UN's ability to carry out its mission has been increasingly questioned in recent years. Today, it is not primarily intergovernmental problems that need to be solved. Now we see more and more civil wars with the involvement of pure gangster and criminal gangs. Can the UN become effective and credible? The Carlsson Commission has put forward proposals for measures. Ingvar Carlsson, chairman of the commission, participates in the program and looks at the future UN.
