Call Girl: Meh, so-so short
Platypuschow17 May 2019
I wasn't familiar with the creator or the "Alter" shorts so went in with zero expectations, that's always a good thing but this short certainly isn't.

It tells the tale of a man who brings an escort into his home all the while recording the encounter on his laptop. Things don't go quite to plan however.

Starring Laurence R. "Human Centipede 2 & 3" Harvey it's a blink and you'll miss it experience that honestly has been done before. I've seen this very same "Plot" done prior and considerably better.

I'm not saying it's bad, it's well enough made but we've seen this before and there really is no excuse for this degree of recycling. To make matters worse the video buffers repeatedly to represent a stream, but honestly we already knew that and therefore it was needlessly annoying.

The Good:

Laurence R. Harvey

The Bad:

The annoying buffering

Hardly original

Half Good Half Bad

Warning: Spoilers
Call Girl (2014) is about a creepy old man played by Laurence R. Harvey. This short film is very short and the concept is simple. Ed invites a prostitute to his house but he has much darker plans than those people have when they hire prostitutes, he wants to murder her while recording everything for people to see through his laptop's camera. The whole film has an annoying visual effect which is artificial lagging to mimic a laptop's camera similar to apps like skype etc. The performance my Laurence R. Harvey is amazing but what is supposed to be a twist in the end ruins the whole thing. So Ed hits the prostitute on the head with a metal bar, she seems to be dead but later she attacks Ed and starts eating parts of him. I don't know that ruined the whole thing for me. So the prostitute he hired also happens to be some sort of vampire/cannibal? How convenient. My rating is 5, it would be higher but the lagging and the ending ruined the thing for me.

Starts promising, but loses quality quickly

Warning: Spoilers
"Call Girl" is a 5-minute short film from last year directed by Jill Gevargizian and written by Eric Havens. It is a little horror movie about a guy who invites a woman over for a date. However, things are not the way they seem and that goes for both characters. We get to watch the action through a static camera which is actually a webcam and Harvey is communicating with us on several occasions. He occasionally shows signs and mannerisms from his character on "Human Centipede", the insanity obviously, but also the coughing for example. I thought this film started off okay and Harvey certainly known how to portray creepy. There is one moment especially when we see him move towards the camera and because of the camera's buffering he appears right in front of us the next camera shot. That was certainly well done in terms of creepy. However, when the whole thing turns into a psychotic massacre towards the end, the film loses all its suspense and it's not a convincing work in my opinion. As a whole, I hoped for more and I also hope Gevargizian can step thing up for future projects as it looks she is still at the very early stages of her career.

One of the best shorts I've ever had the joy of watching!

Wow. Although Jill Sixx's debut short clocks in at only 6 minutes (heh heh) it's one of the best little flick's I've ever had the privilege of seeing. The performances of it's leading lad and lady are stellar and the skewed, bizarre viewing angle adds so much tension to the whole piece.

This is an amazing short that demands viewing if it's showing in your area. The music, editing, effects and performances make it stand out from a legion of other shorts invading festivals everywhere.

Jill has just announced a second project "The Stylist", which has me exceptionally excited considering the quality of Call Girl. It was actually this movie that enticed me to approach Tristan Risk for my third short film. She is just wonderful bringing a mix of vulnerability and power to the role in equal measure.

Laurence is stunning and I won't go into his performance too much, as I don't want to risk posting any spoilers for this amazing piece.

Seriously, this film has inspired me as a film-maker and I can only imagine the heights someone of Jill Sixx will reach in her career, considering this is her debut piece.
