Puppet Master Axis Termination: Hopefully the franchise dies here
The finale of the Axis trilogy and at time of writing (Excluding the reboot) the final movie in the franchise, this is further evidence that Puppet Master needs laying to rest alongside all the other horror franchises that ran beyond their time.
You know the drill by now, a group of "Patriots" during WWII team with the good puppets to face off against Germans and their evil puppets and...........yeah.
It follows on from the previous two Axis movies, but just barely. It stars Paul Hogan who hams it up to a painful degree, the majority of the rest of the cast aren't much better and truth be told this is the worst Puppet Master since Puppet Master: Legacy (2003)!
With recycled footage, barely any plot, same generic content and awful cast this was just so very very bad.
Remember when Puppet Master started and they were actual horrors? Sure they were campy and hard to take seriously but they at least had character. Then suddenly Full Moon and Charles Band decided to take them in a goofy direction and the series lost all credibility.
I'd say this is one for big fans of Puppet Master only, but be aware that if this truly is the final movie then it ends on a low note and doesn't culminate the story that's been going since the 80's in the slightest.
One decent scene
Russian accent, really?
Pretty much everything
Winchester: What I expected, which isn't good
I'll be honest I never had any interest in Winchester, the trailer bored me.
I watched it simply because it was on and everything I assumed about it turned into reality.
Helen Mirren stars in this highly cliched generic horror movie that alike the trailer quite frankly bored me. It's not without its merits, in fact I quite like the premise but it comes across flat and even Mirren failed to bring her A game.
Telling the story of a doctor recruited to decide the mental state of an old lady living in a bizarre house who believes that victims of the gun her family invented are haunting her.
Something about this reminded me oddly of 13 Ghosts (2001), except that was a passable affair whereas this relies too much on the standard tropes and quite frankly is a tad pretentious.
I expected not to like it and I was correct, predictable tripe.
Mirren was quite poor here
The Changeover (2017)
The Changeover: Kiwi teen sci-fi type stuff
Young adult book adaptations into sickly movies have been a thing for a while now, from Twilight to the Host to Divergent to Hunger Games and beyond. Here we see New Zealand have a go at it, and it's the same as the US tends to deliver.
Telling the story of a girl who must face an evil force in order to save her little brother this is a witchy themed thing, and the above description of sickly most definitely applies.
Starring Timothy Spall and Lucy Lawless I'm being a tad generous here, it's a really quite bad film.
You see it's your usual teen angst vs less than normal love interest vs nonsensical convoluted plot hole ridden concept. To make matters worse the two leads are awful! Nicholas Galitzine is your stoic dull mysterious brooding "Hunk" and Erana James is the Kiwi Kristen Stewart and has the acting ability of a brick. The two of them pick one facial expression at the start and continue it for the full duration of the movie.
If you like your schmaltzy teen angst nonsense then you might enjoy this, otherwise steer clear.
Spall is oddly on form
So much teen angst!
The two leads have the emotional range of a fart
Helen Keller vs. Nightwolves (2015)
Helen Keller vs. Nightwolves: Sorry, was that meant to be funny?
I'm quite partial to weird movies and over the years I've seen some truly bizarre stuff, but it still needs to entertain and this anus stuffed garbage fire simply doesn't.
It tells the story (And I use that term very very loosely) of Helen Keller regaling people with tales of how she became a famed wolf hunter and overcame losing her senses.
It's a comedy of the "Gonzo" variety and is as funny as a play written by three 4yr olds. Every joke made me cringe, it's not that it wasn't funny but that it was so unfunny it was painful to endure. This was one of those movies I struggled to make it through and made me curse my belief that you have to watch a movie all the way through to have a right to judge it.
Every single joke! So so bad, and after watching this and the easy bottom 10 Mummy Reborn (2019) I'm wondering what I did to deserve this travesty.
Starring the excellent Lin Shaye and a host of other notable stars I can only assume they owed someone a favor to be part of this calamity.
Cast are too good for this
DVD 2 (2019)
DVD 2: I waited all this time for this?!
DVD 2 has been on my struggling to get list for a while, by the looks of it the movie was hit with multiple delays.
A hyper obscure independent Belgium made horror movie it follows on from the events of DVD (2016) which was a passable little anthology movie.
Here we see a man fascinated with the DVD from the first film who begins to investigate its background to find out whether its real. Needless to say he finds more than he was expecting.
Gone is the anthology format, this is now just found footage stuff following our protagonist as he travels around researching the subject of his obsession.
I like the idea, I appreciate what they were going for here and think that it follows on from the first movie fantastically. Sadly it doesn't work, it's lifeless, goes nowhere and our leading man is the absolute pits.
I wanted to like this I really did, but they dropped the ball hard. I believe a third movie is in production, hopefully they can redeem the franchise by delivering a real finale to wrap everything up neatly.
Maybe kill Frank off immediately in part 3 so we don't need to see his awful "Acting" again.
Follows on really well
Some really cringey moments and dialogue
A Game of Death (1945)
A Game of Death: Passable remake
A Game of Death is a remake The Most Dangerous Game (1932) in fact it's one of many remakes. This however is a very close "Loyal" one which though has tweaks could easily be confused with the original because of both the visuals, plot and actor choices.
Once again it tells the story of people involved in shipwrecks who find themselves taken in by a mysterious stranger on an island. Little do they know he is a hunter and his choice of prey, man!
It's a great premise and the movie once again does a decent enough job of telling the story. I do however think that 13yrs earlier they told the tale better.
Again this is fairly loyal, it's essentially the same movie just with couple of tweaks and structural differences. Ultimately it's the near identical so if you've seen the original you'll get absolutely nothing out of this.
Watchable stuff, but inferior to The Most Dangerous Game (1932).
Well made remake
I cannot root for a hunter
Too close to the original
Mummy Reborn (2019)
Mummy Reborn: It's true, it's all true
The ocean of 1/10 one line poorly worded reviews for this movie, it's true! Every single word.
I currently stand at around 9600 movies watched according to IMDB so hopefully that will put things into perspective and give my following statement some real weight. This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, easily bottom 10.
Now before I continue I want to point out that this is one of those IMDB movies in the middle of a game of tug of war. Looking at the reviews, the wording and the new accounts it's clear there is a hate campaign against the film. Weeks ago when I first came onto the films page there was even a full on troll FAQ slagging the movie off. But on the flipside one in every three ratings is a 10 so clearly it's being shilled into oblivion as well.
So why is it so bad? Wow, where could I start? I actually thought based on everything I read that it couldn't possibly be that bad, it really is.
For a start you often see dishonest movie covers, where for example a girl is in a state of undress where she isn't in the film or a guy has a gun on the cover whereas he never holds one in the entire movie. Mummy Reborn sets a new dishonest standard as everything you see on the cover is a lie, the vehicles, the guns, the priestess and most shockingly the characters. No seriously, who are those people because they're not in the movie.
The film itself is supposed to be a horror, but at random increments it gets intentionally silly/comedic. The balance is insane and you just can't take the movie seriously. But then again the script is so laughable and the acting is so dire you couldn't take it seriously anyway.
I cringed through a large portion of the film, it's not a problem with the cinematography it's just literally everything else. Even the soundtrack, it features Ave Maria and at the most bizarre time.
Fight scenes, sfx, plot, script, acting, this is a flawlessly bad movie and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an unintentional comedy. Even then, be drunk or something to soften the blow.
Certain parts are literal intentional comedy and stupidly out of place
Acting ranges from bad to "How in the blue hell did this person get the role?"
Some logic is offensively stupid
Vile characters, who am I supposed to be rooting for?
Ave Maria, really?
Ultimate Spider-Man (2005)
Ultimate Spider-Man: Best Spiderman game I've played thus far
When it comes to a Spiderman videogame there are certain aspects you genuinely expect to see. Open world, great swinging mechanics and a wide array of familiar characters from the comics. Ultimate Spiderman delivers on all fronts here.
Created in the style of a living breathing comic book complete with transitions it's the best Spiderman game that I've played thus far (Though I'm told the 2018 offering will likely change that).
With plenty to do in the open world, a great fighting system that makes you feel rather overpowered and the best swinging mechanics to date Ultimate Spiderman is a fantastic superhero game.
I'm not keen on the animation style and I think the story is considerably too short (Like really really short) but it makes up for it in side content and never ending nods to fans of the original comic book.
Much of it can get a tad repetitive and I was left wishing there were maybe alternate suits, characters, more unlockables in general but I couldn't take away what they accomplished here.
Lots of content
Web swinging is near flawless
Great comic book style
Graphical style doesn't suit me
More unlockables would have been nice
Story is far too short
The Domestics (2018)
The Domestics: The definition of average
The Domestics was one I went into apprehensively, I figured I'd not like it but I was wrong.........kinda.
In a post apocalyptic world the remaining survivors have fallen under one of two categories. The Domestics, people who want to live like they did before everything went to hell and the gangs who want to live the way they want to at the cost of those around them.
Personally I liked this idea, the different gangs each with their own gimmicks and appearances appealed to me. But sadly the movie doesn't live up to the potential of the premise.
Starring Kate Bosworth it's a stylish looking interesting movie that structurally is all over the place. Beginning/middle/end? Not here, this bounces from scene to scene almost at random feeling more like a series of skits than a movie.
Sure it has some great moments, but mashed altogether to make a film I was left confused as to why they'd do that.
The Domestics is a cluster of great ideas ruined by incompetence and foolish writing decisions.
I like the idea
Looks the part
Some of the worse structuring I've seen from a movie in years
Misses the mark on several levels
Puppet Master X: Axis Rising (2012)
Puppet Master X Axis Rising: A franchise that should have died years ago
Okay Puppet Master were never exactly good films, but compare the first movie for example to these more recent efforts and there really is a clear deterioration.
Campy, not scary, not funny, not interesting.
The second movie in the Axis trilogy it tells the story of..............every single other Puppet Master movie. More people teaming with the puppets to fight the Germans during world war two.
You'll have literally seen it all before, no originality, no advances in lore or sfx. Just a pitiful recycling of the same ideas they've been peddling since the 1980's.
One thing that did stick out however was the female antagonist, her costume, her awful German accent. Was I supposed to take her seriously? When she came on I questioned whether I'd acquired a porn parody of the film, she was ridiculous.
If you like Puppet Master films and have low expectations then you'll likely enjoy more of the same, because that really is it all is.
Follows on well from the previous movie
Some questionably bad audio quality
Croatoan Origins (2015)
Croatoan Origins: 9.0.....9.0.....9.0! Are you kidding me?
At time of writing Croatoan Origins has a 9.0 rating! If it had a handful of votes I'd get it but it's well over 1k! To put things into perspective only a small percentage of even the IMDB top 250 has 9.0 or over so that's incredibly high.
Based loosely, very loosely on the Croatoan/Roanoke tale we see a homeless man find himself in the middle of a slaughter when a possessed teacher goes on a killing spree.
It looks cheap and nasty, it sounds cheap and nasty, and the writing is....wait for it......cheap and nasty.
I'm open minded, I respect the opinions of others and that frequently my tastes do not align with the majority but a 9.0 is certainly a result of overwhelming levels of shilling as this short film is atrocious.
Little happens, no developments, it has no structure, it certainly has no finale or resolution. It's just pitiful! With so many fantastic horror shorts out there why would anyone bother watching this or for that matter why would anyone have made it?
I'm a simple man, I see boobs I approve
Literally everything across the board
The Most Dangerous Game (1932)
The Most Dangerous Game: Ahead of its time
I came across The Most Dangerous Game as it's based on the same short story as Mindhunters (2004). I can confidently say the connection is minimal.
It tells the story of a group of people who find themselves trapped on an island after their boats mysteriously run ground. Upon arriving they are welcomed by an affluent man who takes care of them, but his intentions are more than slightly macabre.
Truth is this concept has been done before, many times before in fact. Movies, television show episodes, we've seen this countless times. However, this is certainly the earliest and possibly the original.
Fairly short at just around the hour mark we see our hero trying to survive this deadly game. Alas him bragging about being a hunter and his baffling rather offensive philosophies and beliefs around hunting made me incapable of caring about him.
Regardless this was a well structured little movie especially considering its run time. I enjoyed it and would consider it well ahead of its time.
Needless animal suffering
Mina the Witch (2008)
Mina the Witch: Should have just carried on Slayer Paris
Mina the Witch is a spinoff show from Slayer Paris (2008). This time it follows the adventures of the groups resident witch Mina, and the episodes connect to events throughout Slayer Paris.
So basically we have more of the same, wafer thin plot and lots of T&A levels.
Personally I like Mina Meow and Charlotte Kelly is excellent and hyper charismatic as Gwendoline so it does have its merits.
That's about it however, this much like the show its spun-off from is hugely niche and is aimed at a very specific demographic.
It's enjoyable for what it is, but on the flipside what it "Is" isn't very good.
Connects well with Slayer Paris
Mina Meow & Charlotte Kelly
InkSplosion: Rushed genericism
Inksplosion is one of those hyper short indie cheap as chips games that people play exclusively for trophies/achievements and therefore the Platinum was made to be very easy to attain.
You control a black and white..........thing. Moving around a dull background which gets covered in multi-coloured paint and you shoot various generic weapons at fellow black and white..........things.
As you can tell not a lot of time or effort went into this in any shape or form. It looks uninspired, the game is clunky and annoying to play and it's something that anyone with two+ brain cells could make on a free game making piece of software.
It's not awful, it's just bad generic stuff of the sort that peaked over a decade ago (If not two). It's a game that as mentioned people buy for ulterior motives and will likely not play for more than an hour total.
It's over quick
Night of the Comet (1984)
Night of the Comet: Misses greatness
Night of the Comet is a movie I thought I'd seen years ago, alas I was mixing it up with the superior Night of the Creeps (1986).
It tells the story of a comet that goes by earth and somehow turns almost the entire worlds population to dust. Those not vaporized are either okay or psychotic deformed cannibals!
Now I'll be honest I loved this concept, I love the idea of waking up and everyone is gone with an element of danger in the form of these mutants. I was very excited to see what they did with it and for the first half I was very engaged.
After the halfway point however it quickly becomes apparent that the writer had run out of ideas because it got really quite mediocre. Gone was the mystery, gone was the gimmick altogether to be fair and we were instead facing a generic 80's sci-fi.
Starring Robert "Voyager" Beltran and industry veteran Geoffrey Lewis the cast do their best but when the half way point is reached sadly there was really nothing that they could do.
I'm anti-remakes/reboots but this is one of those rare exceptions. I'd love to see someone remake this, however the second half would need re-writing into something less generic and quite honestly pathetic.
Watchable stuff but it should have been considerably better.
Some decent visuals
Geoffrey Lewis and Kelli Maroney
Trails off hard
The Snarling (2018)
The Snarling: I'm as shocked as you are
Okay so look at that cover, look at that title! I went in with zero expectations, I believed I was likely in for another low budget werewolf mess and when I realized it was British my hopes flatlined.
It's been a longtime since I've been this wrong, this is one of the biggest surprises I've come across in years.
A British independent horror comedy with a werewolf theme that tells that story of a small village as a movie production crew begins filming a zombie movie locally. When the bodies start to pile up it falls on the incompetent police force and local bar buddies to save the day.
It looks as cheap as you'd expect and sadly when anything even remotely werewolf happens the lack of budget shows and hurts the film.
But that's literally all I have to say in criticism of The Snarling. Well cast with a host of vaguely familiar faces from various UK soaps and sitcoms and with some of the best writing I've come across in years! I chuckled, I laughed and I split my sides......this is a genuinely hilarious movie.
Absolutely beats the pants off of most werewolf films and for that matter films in general lately. Really oddly enjoyable.
Some good laughs
Oddly good writing
Lack of budget hurt the film
Puppet Master: Axis of Evil (2010)
Puppet Master Axis of Evil: Flogging a dead horse
Axis of Evil is the 10th Puppet Master movie and the first in the Axis trilogy.
It demonstrates yet another franchise that Fullmoon is milking into dust, and it's a shame to see a franchise that's been going since the 80's deteriorate to this level.
Telling yet another story of a keeper of the puppets who uses them to combat the German forces during world war II it's...............there really is no point in me describing it any further as it's the same as the majority of the movies that came before it.
Sadly there hasn't been a decent Puppet Master movie for years, the quality has dipped to a crippling degree. The more they try to add to the Puppet Master lore the more ridiculous it gets and we're at the stage now where the whole thing is hokey and the Puppets take a backseat.
Yes that's right the puppets aren't the stars of the movie at all, they're barely supporting players and our leads/antagonists are unforgivably dull. So if you're expecting more exciting doll vs man encounters/death scenes then you'll be sorely let down by this 10th outing.
There are three more Puppet Master movies after this, and that's assuming it doesn't continue further. Truth be told, it shouldn't.
Stick this one with a fork, it's done.
Has a degree of Full Moon charm left
Brings nothing new to the table
Mindhunters: Smart little thriller
Mindhunters is one of those movies that's been on my watchlist forever, over the years its just managed to consistently evade me. Now I've seen it however, the wait was worth it.
This thriller starring Johnny Lee Miller, L L Cool J and Val Kilmer tells the story of several FBI agents going on a mock assignment on a secluded island in hopes of pleasing their tutor and getting the desired profiler job of their dreams. However shortly after arriving things suddenly get a tad too real.
I'll be honest even though its been on my watchlist for so long I didn't actually know what it was. For some reason I thought it was a sci-fi with a name like that, whereas it is in fact a fairly smart little thriller.
A blend of SAW (2004) and your standard police drama it's an entertaining little movie that is well written, well constructed and certainly not take your brain out viewing.
Sadly it's not without its flaws but it's still a lot of fun and a demonstration that once upon a time Hollywood did know how to do original old school style movies before they so very badly lost their way.
Fun little movie.
Cast are on point
Old school feel
Feels like its missing something
Film could have done with a higher running time
Flay: Absolute abomination of a movie
2019 has been a mess of a year so far and movies like Flay certainly aren't doing it any favors.
After the death of her mother a girl returns home, rekindles friendships, reunites with her estranged brother and battles a supernatural force.
Seen that before, but it's not normally this bad. The story is an absolute abomination, I can't stress just how much of a mess it is. At no point did I care where the story was going or the fates of any of the characters. In fact a lot of the time I really had very little clue as to what I was even watching.
Does that look like Slender Man on the cover? Well it is, kind of.........but this isn't a Slender Man movie. They just decided to throw him in because erm....reasons?
Awful plot, awful sfx, awful cast, just plain awful all round.
That would be a no
The Gamers (2002)
The Gamers: I see what they went for, but I didn't like it
I'm big ol' nerd, if there was a suitable D&D group locally I'd want to be part of it. For this reason I really appreciate things like this and am saddened there aren't more! The last D&D themed movie I saw was the superior Zero Charisma (2013).
Here a group of friends are playing D&D on campus and the movie flits between them and their characters in game. I like the idea, I relate to everything present but I just didn't find myself really able to enjoy it.
The characters were alarmingly annoying, I could not play a game with them without sufficient amounts of alcohol that's for sure. And their in game personas really weren't much better.
It's really ugly, I know this was highly independent but it looks dire and the few SFX they had are so poor I don't understand why they didn't do a quick After Effects tutorial to deliver something better.
The humor is hit and miss, I won't lie I did laugh but I'm not entirely sure I was meant to at those parts. The misses are frequent, I just didn't find them funny in fact yet again to clarify I found them really annoying.
I relate to the creators, I relate to the subject matter and I really wanted to like it. I didn't hate it, I'm just disappointed that material so close to my heart didn't deliver on a level I expected it to.
Some laughs to be had
I appreciate what they were trying to do
Oddly annoying characters
Really ugly in places
Office Uprising (2018)
Office Uprising: Stop calling these things zombie movies
Office Uprising is the latest in a spate of office themed horror movies, and you know what? It's kind of good.
It follows a young office employee having the worst shift of his life as overnight everyone in his building turns psychotic thanks to a mysterious new energy drink.
Starring Zachary "Shazam" Levi, Gregg Henry, Kurt Fuller, Karan "Dopinder from Deadpool" Soni and Alan "Former Aquaman" Ritchson the movies cast manage to deliver in this enjoyable comedy horror.
Hyper violent, frantic, yet with substance and a lot of well done comedy this was one of those unknown little gems I'm really glad I watched. Sure it's far from flawless but it managed to entertain and that's something most of it's ilk seem incapable of doing lately.
But something has to be addressed, this is advertised as a zombie movie! I know zombies are "In" but stop lying! Zombies are undead for crying out loud, stop claiming that every movie where people turn violent is a zombie film! I seem to have developed a real chip on my shoulder about that, it's just rampant and dishonest.
Office Uprising is an enjoyable take your brain out 90 minutes of violence and laughs, it does exactly what it says on the tin...................minus the zombies.
Some great comedy
Cast deliver (Especially Levi)
NOT a zombie film
The Basement (2018)
The Basement: Wow just.....wow
I was immediately struck by The Basements low IMDB rating and after watching it I can entirely understand now.
It tells the story of a man kidnapped by an infamous serial killer, but this psycho doesn't just kill his victims he instead role plays with them under the guises of a multitude of characters.
This makes for oddly awkward viewing, this is very uncomfortable stuff and certainly not for the faint of heart. Arguably this is less of a thriller/horror and more of a torture porn type film.
Starring Mischa Barton the movie has a cast who deliver decent performances but the movie feels less like a story and more of a snuff film. This is not pleasant and I'm sad to say doesn't ultimately go anywhere or deliver at the end.
These films are niche, I'm not the target audience but when done right they can be clever, intelligent well constructed movies! This, is not.
Some high grade stupidity
No real plot
Bad Channels (1992)
Bad Channels: Worst Full Moon film?
I like Full Moon films, they have a certain charm to them despite on the surface being seven shades of awful. If it weren't for Full Moon we wouldn't have had the Puppet Master franchise, Doll Man, Gingerdead Man, Evil Bong and countless others.
Bad Channels is supposedly part of the Puppet Master universe but I can confidently say I don't see the connection.
It tells the story of a "Shock Jock" who comes into contact with aliens intent on using his radio station equipment to kidnap women............somehow.
Not the most intriguing of plots and truth be told it's execution is even worse. It looks like a Full Moon film with the same plasticcy special effects and that's okay, the general quality of the film however isn't.
It's just so, bad! The characters, the script, the concept, it's like a weird artsy student film and I have to say I think this is likely the worst Full Moon movie sadly.
I'd suggest that anyone beyond the most hardcore Full Moon fan avoid this one, it isn't horror, it isn't comedy, it's just the absolute pits.
Full Moon feel
Extended musical segments
Pretty much everything to be honest
Audrey Rose (1977)
Audrey Rose: Huge dud
Anthony Hopkins stars in this supernatural piece but it's certainly not a notable moment of his career.
It tells the story of a happy couple and their young daughter who come across a man who believes their daughter is the reincarnated spirit of his late daughter. Interesting concept, but it doesn't really go anywhere.
Also starring Marsha "Drop Dead Fred" Mason it's a slow burning tale full of unlikable characters, overacting and a dreadful child actress who thankfully stopped acting in 1995.
At no point did I care about the characters plight or care to know the outcome of the movies great mystery. It's just so un-engaging it's a tribute to my steadfast belief that you have to watch a movie all the way through if you have a right to criticize it.
Audrey Rose is a rare miss for Hopkins and a tiresome bore.
Ultimately goes nowhere
Town of Salem (2014)
Town of Salem: Stupidly addictive stuff
I was recommended Town of Salem by someone randomly on Facebook one day, I gave it ago and all this time later I'm still playing it.
Played via Steam or free through a normal browser window it's a remarkably addictive little game that I was oddly familiar with. You see a team building exercise in some offices is called simply Wolf and is essentially a live action simplistic version of this.
Entirely online you play one of a number of people in Salem, you're assigned a random secret role whether it be part of the town, mafia or miscellaneous evil such as a werewolf or serial killer.
For the town to win they must remove all the evil and for set evils to win they must essentially do the same. Trouble is nobody knows who is what and the majority of the game is done through chat. It's a fascinating social experiment almost, a game of logic and deduction and it's infinetly fun.
Each day everyone gets to vote if someone should be lynched, and every night the evils get to have their way. It's a tense intellectual game with infinite possibilities, no two games are ever the same.
With an ever updated shop providing you with cosmetic bonuses it's free to play but microtransactions (Which aren't pay to play) are present.
But no game is perfect and with an online game like this it can only be as good as its community. Trolls and game throwers are absolutely rife, you're guaranteed to have at least one in every game. It has to be considered an adult only game purely because of the language and behavior of its players.
If you can get past that Town of Salem is so very much fun and worth anyone's time.
Clever little game
Strong developer with regular updates
Ridiculous censorship algorithm
