"Dia de los Muertos" is a 3-minute animated short film from 2013, so this one will have its 5th anniversary next year and this one is currently receiving a boost in popularity as it is about a Mexican holiday, namely the one in the title, that also is the center of the newest Pixar film. But we shall talk about that one on another occasion. Today we focus on this really short one here. There is no spoken language included, so you can watch it without subtitles no matter which languages you (don't) speak. Even if they worked as animators on other projects, this is at this point still the only directing and writing credit for Graham, Reynolds and St. Pierre, the three women who made it.
It is the story of a little girl crying over her mother's death next to her tombstone. Then she gets pulled down into the soil by a flower. Sounds pretty creepy doesn't it? Well, if you see it, you will immediately recognize that there is not 1% of horror in here. The skeletons may be skeletons, but their dancing and goofiness makes it a really light watch overall and the girl finally understands that there is no reason to be afraid, especially when she has a fatefully emotional encounter towards the end. I think it was a good watch. I really liked the animation too, the looks in terms of both characters and the environment. Soundtrack was fun too and fits the overall spirit. Yes they may be dead, but there's no reason to not be joyful in celebrating their existence and the time we were allowed to spend with them. I think this is a charming little movie with some nice heart. Greatness may not have been achieved, but it could make for a nice little add-on or extra on a Coco DVD or Bluray. I give it a thumbs-down and recommend checking it out.
