Putting a smile back on her face (also because of the notion that death is not the end)
Horst_In_Translation1 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Dia de los Muertos" is a 3-minute animated short film from 2013, so this one will have its 5th anniversary next year and this one is currently receiving a boost in popularity as it is about a Mexican holiday, namely the one in the title, that also is the center of the newest Pixar film. But we shall talk about that one on another occasion. Today we focus on this really short one here. There is no spoken language included, so you can watch it without subtitles no matter which languages you (don't) speak. Even if they worked as animators on other projects, this is at this point still the only directing and writing credit for Graham, Reynolds and St. Pierre, the three women who made it.

It is the story of a little girl crying over her mother's death next to her tombstone. Then she gets pulled down into the soil by a flower. Sounds pretty creepy doesn't it? Well, if you see it, you will immediately recognize that there is not 1% of horror in here. The skeletons may be skeletons, but their dancing and goofiness makes it a really light watch overall and the girl finally understands that there is no reason to be afraid, especially when she has a fatefully emotional encounter towards the end. I think it was a good watch. I really liked the animation too, the looks in terms of both characters and the environment. Soundtrack was fun too and fits the overall spirit. Yes they may be dead, but there's no reason to not be joyful in celebrating their existence and the time we were allowed to spend with them. I think this is a charming little movie with some nice heart. Greatness may not have been achieved, but it could make for a nice little add-on or extra on a Coco DVD or Bluray. I give it a thumbs-down and recommend checking it out.

Day of the joyful dead! Warning: Spoilers
On a bright sunny day a little girl visits her mother's grave and is very sad as she still misses her very much - but not for too long as she is abruptly pulled down into an infectiously festive and upbeat spirit underworld that is full of merry skeletons where eventually she is reunited with her mother, who reminds her child that she'll always be in her heart and that she doesn't need to feel sad or alone anymore and should live her young life to its fullest and move on and be happy. Ok so while they're wasn't all that much to this, I did love its beautiful brightly coloured visuals and the whole Mexico celebration of the afterlife thing, I love the Spanish guitar, it's soothing and brings a very distinctive vibe to a short animation's atmosphere. A also love the absurdly cheerful sight and notion of a skeleton mariachi band, it's interesting and different to me, taking something that's traditionally meant to be macabre and turning it into something...well, happy! It was a sensible move when the skeleton ghost of the girl's mother turned back into a warm human figure that she remembered as they hugged one last time, it made the moment a little more personal and touching, and I liked how the girl still had the freaky little blue flower in her hair that her mother gave her when she woke up back at the foot of the grave, just so we didn't have to wonder if the little darling tripped and bumped her head! Very sweet little short, very well done, and it says that we shouldn't forget our lost loved ones, but we also shouldn't forget to enjoy out life for today, because they'd never want that for us! :" Light in my heart the evening star of rest and then let the night whisper to me of love."
