A very well reported film on an issue that affects us all, or at least will affect us some day soon. Water scarcity is expected to become a major driver of conflict in the 21st century and as films like this explore, the politics behind who gets water + for what purposes is fascinating.

The music and sound design do a great job bringing it all together, but the boots-on-the-ground reporting is what really stands out. In an era of information overload, and a lack of trust in the news, getting first hand factual reporting from within a local community like this is the first step towards saving our democracy.

A triumphant underdog story
jffeldhake20 June 2024
ACID Canal, at the surface level, is a story about a problem that is urgently threatening a small farming community. However, the film's themes about the "little guy" rising to the occasion to take on the governmental red tape and fix the problem for the people is resonant throughout.

The film has a great mix of B-roll, interviews (both staged and cinema verite), and animations that will keep you intrigued and locked in for the entire run time. Faires does a great job at giving the issue at hand a fair and non-biased representation so that the viewer is left with nothing but the facts.

Although I know nothing of California politics or even water distribution protocol at a macro level, I still felt compelled to see where the story went and I was invested in the characters of the film-- both good and bad.

A powerful portrayal of a critical water distribution issues effecting small upstate California communities.
GrantHayes_Anthropofilm20 January 2024
I'm writing this review of Acid Canal as a local resident of Shasta County, the location in California where this story unfolds. California as a state captures the global imagination as if it were a country all its own but many within the state and abroad fail to see the diverse communities that exist here beyond the world of Bay Area tech or Southern California beaches.

Acid Canal not only makes visible a critical water distribution issue effecting many people in upstate California, but also communities of people who often become overlooked amid the myriad of impactful problems faced by the state.

This film greatly succeeds in presenting the details of the 2022 A. C. I. D. Canal drought fiasco in an engaging and impartial manner. The voices of a diverse array of film respondents occupying various positions within the water distribution disaster brings the full scale of the problem into stark relief.

If you wish to be taken on a compelling journey to the headwaters of a local California water issue, look no further than ACID CANAL.

Great film about California's water issues!
mischa-199528 December 2023
Really enjoyed this deep dive into California's water issues, as told through one community's experience. The filmmakers did a great job balancing multiple perspectives and following the story through its resolution. It is an excellent portrait of a community coming together to solve a problem and hold officials accountable. What could have easily been be an overly technical story held my attention because of the compelling characters and what was at stake for them. I was inspired by the community members who stepped up to get involved and find solutions - that's what democracy is all about. Many lessons can be taken from this film!

Excellent, compelling and educational!

This was a spot on representation of this issue. Aside from the beautiful cinematography throughout, the subject matter is engaging and enlightening to the effects of bad policy or rural communities. Worth the watch. There are several moments throughout this documentary expose the cold hard truth of the harsh reality faced by the residents within the Anderson/Cottonwood Irrigation District as well as shed light on their resolve and willingness to fight against policy makers and support each other throughout the process. It is documentaries like these that give a voice to small communities being overlooked. Great work.

"ACID Canal" is a compelling and thought-provoking documentary that sheds light on the environmental and political challenges faced by James Rickert and the Northern California community in their quest to bring change to ACID (Agricultural Canal Irrigation District) Board of Directors in Northern California. Directed by Tyler Faires, the film takes audiences on a gripping journey as it explores the consequences of drought and long term mismanagement and the impact it has on the ACID Canal and the surrounding community.

The documentary effectively captures the beauty and importance of the ACID Canal, emphasizing its role in supporting local agriculture and sustaining the region's ecosystem. The cinematography is visually stunning, showcasing the picturesque landscapes and the contrasting issues faced by the canal.

The heart of the film lies in James Rickert's pursuit of accountability and his determination to bring about positive change within the ACID organization. The documentary does an excellent job of portraying his motivations, frustrations, and the personal sacrifices he makes to stand up for what he believes in. Through interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, viewers gain insight into Rickert's character, witnessing his passion for the environment and his commitment to his community.

The pacing of "ACID Canal" is well-balanced, keeping the audience engaged throughout. The film effectively combines personal narratives, expert testimonies, and historical context to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand. I One of the documentary's strengths is its ability to present multiple perspectives. It offers insights from various stakeholders, including ACID board members, local farmers, environmentalists, and experts, allowing viewers to form their own opinions on the matter. This unbiased approach adds depth and credibility to the storytelling, making it more impactful and thought-provoking.

While the documentary successfully highlights the problems faced by the ACID Canal and James Rickert's campaign, it would have benefited from further exploration of potential solutions or alternative viewpoints.
