Stunning pilot
walter-0822423 November 2020
Out of the anime that I've watched, this has to be the best pilot episode I've seen. It's also one of my favorite pilots to any show. I was hooked from the first scene. Just tremendous work all across the board. Great animation, beautiful music, spectacular writing and dialogue, and perfect voice acting from the Japanese cast. It creates an original time and place and puts you right into the atmosphere and in the lives of the characters. The ending sequence is just amazing work. It's such raw emotion and felt so real. This episode was the definition of a hook. Hook, line, and sinker. What an opener. Easy 10/10.

Once the show has envolved and the last manga's chapter has released, Why do this episode hasn't a rating of 9'5+ out 10?

1st Scene of the 1st episode: Makes sense now in the 4th season after 10 years of Story. Do I need to say more?
navodwijerulz8 February 2021
"To you, in 2000 years" is the name of the plot episode. At the time, we didn't even pay attention to that title, because it made no sense. But after all these years, we finally understand. Isiyama, you are a goddamn genius! Please look at the 1st scene of the anime: Eren wakes from a dream. He has seen the future through a dream. NOW in season 4, we know HOW & WHY. He asks mikasa "Why is your hair long?" NOW in season 4, we know WHY. Pay attention to the dream sequence. The 1ST SCENE OF THE FIRST EPSIODE HAD MORE CONTEXT THAN AN WHOLE NORMAL SHOW WOULD HAVE. Go search the net: What does "to you in 2000 years" title name mean? And if you are a manga reader, remember chapter 1of year 2010 and then remember the chapter 120 in last year, 2019. All I can say is... AOT is a GODDAMN MASTERPIECE. AND WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SEEN THE CLASSIC OF THE MODERN AGE BEING MADE. Not only anime, easily one of the deepest plots in any written fiction

The Most Effective Anime Pilot
BadgerStorm43458 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Of all my highest rated anime, Hunter x Hunter, Code Geass, Fate/Zero and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, only one has a great pilot. That anime is Attack on Titan. The pilot episode of this show is so intriguing, so disturbing and so gripping, that it could someone's interest for the entire first season, even if they didn't like it. The death of Eren's mother was gruesome and incredibly well done. Death in anime can feel inconsequential sometimes, but this death, of a character who has 2 minutes of former screen time, was so real and disturbing that it almost made me want to quit watching and wash my face in a sink for a couple hours.

Great introduction to an interesting world
Luisvtw4 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"To You, in 2000 Years - The Fall of Shiganshina: Part 1" is a great first episode that throws the viewer into an interesting world. You get to know the first few characters and what is going on in the world.

Recap: Within a massive walled settlement lies a district known as Shiganshina. Inside this district there lives a boy named Eren Yeager who dreams for a life outside this walled settlement. However his quest for independence is hampered by the presence of giant humanoid creatures known as Titan's that roam the land eating anyone they can find. Despite Eren's frustration at living inside, what he considers, a birdcage, his family try to convince him to accept the life he currently has living within the safety of Wall Maria. However Eren, along with his adoptive sister Mikasa, and best friend Armin, are about to receive a rude awakening when a Colossal Titan appears before them.

Unbelievable Opening to a Show
liamgallaagher24 January 2022
I think this is easily the best start to any anime I have seen so far. Unlike other anime such as Naruto, where things sort of take a while to build up, this episode will get you hooked immediately. I started the other day and I cannot wait to see the journey that this show takes me on. Beautiful animation, enthralling story, just an all around great first episode. If you are debating watching this show, go ahead and watch this first episode and guarantee you will not be disappointed!

I didn't expect it to be so strong and shocking, An episode that makes you goosebumps from start to finish.

This episode is still one of the best episodes for me because it was the beginning of a very great story that made us sympathize with the hero of the story Eren from the first episode .

Very nice and captivating music .

So it begins
calhoun-805-6000542 March 2021
After watching the rest of the show and getting caught up with season 4 at the time of writing this review, I can honestly say that I have never seen a pilot episode as masterful as this one. Newcomers will have no idea what they're getting into. I know I didn't when I first watched this episode, but from the perspective I have now, I can honestly say that there is not a single viewing experience I've had to this day that has been more rewarding than watching Attack on Titan. To everyone looking for something to ignite some passion into their cinematic viewing experience, there is nothing I can recommend higher than the masterpiece that is Shingeki No Kyojin. 20/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Good start. I like the style, and the episode got straight into establishing the world and its characters effectively. Having just finished The Promised Neverland, and being new to anime (tv shows), I was anxious that a lot of what I found so irritating in that show might've been a general problem of anime shows, but based on this pilot, that doesn't seem to be the case. Dialogue was pretty good for the most part (there are still a couple bits where the character says what's already happened/is clearly happening, which as a pompous film student irks me to no end) and there doesn't really seem to be much melodrama. There's still exaggeration but I'm fine with that considering cartoons will never be as detailed as live action. The ending to the episode was pretty gruesome and it has me instantly gripped. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing whether this show can live up to its monumental hype

One of the worse pilots I've seen
pogcast20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to critique the first 2 episodes as one pilot, even though I think the anime should've just been 44min per episode. Having each "episode" actually be 2 22min episodes messes with the structure but whatever.

A pilot is usually supposed to set up a show. We get introduced to the characters, their motives and the world they live in. Obviously the pilot shouldn't immediately reveal all but it should set it up and yet the only character that gets any sort of setup is Eren. Mikasa is just kinda there as his overly-serious sidekick and Armin just stands there and does nothing for the whole pilot.

Even Eren is set up so poorly. Instead of there being an extended scene between him, his mother and his father and us getting to actually know them, the mom is in 2 short scenes where we only learn the absolute basics about her but nothing to actually hook us into her character and feel sorry for Eren when she dies. What's worse, the show clearly realises this but instead of adding more interactions between her and Eren, we get stupid flashbacks in the form of static images right when she dies. I'm sorry dude but that does not make me sad for her, it just makes me wonder why you didn't introduce her better.

Other than that, there are so many plotholes:
  • How did nobody hear an army of titans marching toward the villages?

  • Why are there no posts at the top of the wall where soldiers keep watch for titans?

  • Why are there soldiers keeping watch on the INSIDE of the walls and not one soldier on the OUTSIDE?

  • Why was only one ferry built to carry people in case of an emergency? Materials clearly aren't an issue or the 3 massive stone walls surrouding the villages wouldn't exist

Oh and what should've been a big reveal of the titans is spoiled through the intro, the episode shouldn't have aired the intro at all

I could go on and on but I do not have the braincells to do so anymore. I'm sorry but I do not see how this is any more unique than any other stupid dark fantasy anime out there.

Pure Attack on Titan
superfaful18 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Yes. This is one of the greatest pilots for any TV show, it beats Game of Throne's Winter is Coming, and Breaking Bad's Pilot. It starts a little slow, it introduced new characters, but the last five minutes were spectacular! You just feel so bad for Eren. A good start to an amazing series!

Just decided to watch the series again Before the final season part 2! When knowing what is gonna happen, this episode got even better! So many details that you want notice at first watch! Really feels like the path was decided already in this first episode!!

Overall an amazing first episode on par with other great pilots such as To your eternity, Lost, GOT and BB.

Beginning of a masterpiece

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best first episodes in fiction, and its value will only compound as the animated series wears on. I predict that people will be returning to this title to witness the unfathomable scale of Hajime Isayama's foreshadowing and storytelling :}.

Promising world building but badly written main character
august-sonnergren22 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The environment art, setting and world building behind this is great. The suporting characters are typical but fine. I was missing more buildup on the doctor (step-father) but liked the more subtle introduction of the sister. The established lazy garrision man and his attempt to heroism at the end was ok storytelling.

Why they couldnt save the mother was silly. It wasnt well supported by the visuals that she was completely stuck under the house. It looked as if tgey could pull her out. But because of plot, they couldnt.

What bothers me about Eren isnt the whinying and anger, although annoying can be believable in itself, but the reasons for it. Why would kids growing up inside the walls be not content with it? What put that idea into their heads? Certainly not the elders why have not known any life beyond in their lifetime. It is as if the main character has a 200 years older charactwr within him. But even if that was true, wouldnt everyone else be more puzzled by his reaction? It is as if the reasons for his anger is understood, but not shared.

I really hope that in later episodes it really is a 200 year old persons notions that are coming through Eren. In that case I can applaud the writing partly, but not fully, because why let us think the writing is bad and stop watching / following the story because of it?

I knew from the first episode that ya boi Eren was gonna be a titan. Totally lame. Such a waste of time. Dialogue is cringe, no chemistry between characters. Save yourself the time and watch Yu-Gi-Oh instead.

Rewatch, 9.85/10
dcdude-269882 September 2023
This is literally one of the most underrated episodes of all time. This is obviously most likely the best pilot episode to ever exist in any TV show. Thr only flaws I could really find were the 9/10 Protagonist and the 9.5/10 Antagonists, but every other aspect of this episode were 10's. Anyways, my favorite characters in this episode were Eren, Mikasa, and Carla. My favorite things about this episode were the storyline, the Cinematography, and the ending. This episode literally captures the manga series perfectly. I read the first four volumes before watching this, and I could see that everything was captured perfectly.
