Warning: Spoilers
When Max found her mother's body in the water she barely shed a tear. So it seems a little odd that since she's such a cold-hearted, self centered individual that she would all of a sudden be jealous of Julia? And linda telling Phil that he can't go with her to the cement factory because he's not a cop is funny since earlier in the season she was handing badges out like candy. Linda could easily remedy the issue of phil not being a cop by giving phil a candy.... I mean badge. And Linda is sorely lacking when it comes to her detective skills. She thinks barbie shot julia after julia found out barbie killer her husband? ...but instead of finishing her off, he takes her to the hospital? That doesn't seem strange to her at all? It's also weird that Jim would take such a gamble trying to pin everything on Barbie when julia has only been shot in the shoulder and could wake up at anytime. There's some really weird writing in this series.

Dumb Character with Power
claudio_carvalho21 January 2015
Big Jim convinces Linda that he is a good guy and his propane is saving Chester's mill. Further, she also convinces her that Barbie is a threat to the town. Junior leaves Angie, Joe and Norrie in the barn and the weather changes forming a violent storm. Maxine shots Julia in the chest and Barbie and Joe that is seeking out Junior save her. Barbie leaves Julia in the hospital and goes with Big Jim to Maxine's club. They succeed in dominate Maxine and her bodyguard. Out of the blue, Big Jim executes them both and tries to kill Barbie; however, he punches Big Jim and controls the situation. But Linda arrives and Big Jim tells that Barbie killed Maxine and the other man. Junior, Angie, Joe and Norrie try to communicate with the dome and they have a dreadful vision.

"Speak of the Devil" is one of the worst episodes of "Under the Dome". Linda is an awful character and her dumbness associated to her power of sheriff is laughable. The unstable Junior is the other awful character. My vote is five.

A Good Episode

Warning: Spoilers
By now those who read the book and have stayed the course are "over" the clumsy new characters and deviations from King's novel. It has taken some stamina since until the previous two episodes it was going down pretty much. Two episodes back things stabilized somewhat and the episodic stories themselves began to have some legs of their own. Knowing this is a practically a wholly different telling of the story and finally being able just to actually get into this version you might say, more or less, began to happen. Here we have the best episode since the first would be hard to argue.

What's becoming clear is there is some kind of wrong which the dome is like a gatekeeper of. What that wrong is isn't wholly clear, but it seems it is mainly to do with the corruption which was going on in Chester's Mill prior to the appearance of the dome. Many of the players in the corrupt business have slowly met their demise. The appearance of the mini-dome has ramped things up as the four who are connected somehow to the dome have realized that connection. It just may be that those who are still living who had roles in the crime conspiracy are being used like pawns to move toward some kind of critical outcome. It is hard to deny the people inside Chester's Mill on along for a ride of which they play a part, yet have few if any choices themselves.

This episode had excellent mystery and tension throughout. It also had no boring side stories of any character's lives past or present, thus the pace never lagged. Definitive action scenes were sprinkled in too keeping the viewer wondering and engaged. Scenes such as Max shooting Julia with Barbie having to save her. Jr. realizing he can walk away from the dome, but it won't let him. Big Jim making a very caustic temporary alliance with Barbee in order to take Max down. Max actually being shot and killed with Big Jim getting an outcome even better than he had hoped for in which he can vilify Barbie. Surpringly Dodee (sp?) discovers another revelation by intercepting military communiques where it appears the U.S. government has some plan to use Barbie. And, finally the four connected dome kids having a dome connected vision in which it appears the dome wants them to kill Big Jim. This episode started good and didn't let the viewer down as it packed quite a lot to process. It did so while keeping the aforementioned tension and mystery framed with some real action. The writers are on to something and one can only hope they keep building on this episode's excellence.

Really lame episode
jeppers81-642-2722245 November 2023
Agree with other review, the dumbness of Linda is just too lame and unbelievable. The same thing for the rest of the town for that matter.

Can't believe the writers couldn't see how awful it was when writing it. Maybe they didn't read it themselves after being done. A story quality check would have been in order.

No one would be this dumb as to believe big Jim's story, and not see his thirst for power and wanting to control or rule the town. And Dales supposedly being that evil is what almost everyone in the town believes after big Jim screws him over. The fact that Dale didn't see that coming is also kinda dumb!!
